Pack It In

January 25, 2010

I have had the BEST morning!!! This house hasn’t felt this empty since we moved in 3.25 years ago and I love it! Since I was ready to start my day at 6AM, I got right to work packaging up a lot of our superfluous decor and kitchen stuff. I’m assuming that we’ll sell our house in a shorter-rather-than-later timeframe, so I’m hoping to be as organized as possible going into the move since I’ll have to do everything on Sat + Sun while in my internship. I also want every cabinet that could possibly be peeked in by a buyer to look like a page in Real Simple

If I haven’t mentioned it before, our plan is to finish up some renovations in the next two weeks (new shower door, new bathroom fixtures, pressure washing, carpets cleaned) and put our house on the market on February 16!! Our plan is when we sell our house to move into Karen’s condo with her for a few months while I finish my internship (July 2) and then we’re headed to to Charlottesville around August 1! Our stuff is going to go into a POD. If anyone has used PODS before, please give me any advice!

This stuff is so hard to pack because it’s big, heavy and breakable!

IMG_4368 (640x427)

Luckily I receive lots of packages in this house, and I’ve been saving boxes (and bubble wrap!) for a few months now (you can tell the sun wasn’t even up when I started!)

IMG_4367 (640x427)

My company:

IMG_4370 (640x427)

The end result [many hours later!!]. All properly packaged and labeled!

IMG_4376 (640x427)

Boxes with an X aren’t to be opened until we OWN another house. Boxes with a check are items I’d like to use while we rent for a while.

IMG_4378 (640x427)

During this process I also reorganized the kitchen so the same stuff is in the same cabinets. You see, we have all of our oatmeal bowls in one cabinet and then all tiny bowls in another and plates in various places so I moved them all to be grouped together. I hope Matt doesn’t get lost when he comes home!

[BY THE WAY, Matt has been in CHARLOTTESVILLE this weekend doing research for the bakery!!! I didn’t want to say anything since I would then be telling the world I was home alone. It was a lonely and scary-at-times weekend, but I also had a blast being a single girl :) He comes home today!)

Piles of bowls now sorted… [and color coded 😉 ]

IMG_4374 (427x640) IMG_4415 (427x640)

Used to be half bars n stuff and half appliances. Now ALL appliances

IMG_4372 (640x427) IMG_4411 (640x427)

Now ALL bars n stuff ( used to be half appliances)

IMG_4412 (427x640)

Out of control tea, now sorted

IMG_4371 (640x427) IMG_4418 (640x427)

Cabinets a mix of stuff

IMG_4373 (640x427)

Now ALL bowls

IMG_4413 (640x427)

Now ALL plates (plus mugs + glasses)

IMG_4414 (640x427)

This cabinet used to be so crowded I was afraid to take things out of it! Most of that is now in boxes and it’s so much prettier

IMG_4416 (427x640)

I also collected goodies to give to my friends in a donation this weekend! Good stuff too!

Something that was UNPACKED – a Vita-mix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The CIA Professional Series.

IMG_4377 (640x427)

The company sent me one to review. I have been SO curious about these since I learned about them through the blog world a few years ago. What could be so amazing about a blender!?

IMG_4381 (427x640)

Ok, OK! They have me convinced!! This blender is magical. There wasn’t a hair of un-blended food when I was finished. I love how lightweight the top half is – my Cuisinart blender must weigh 20 pounds and is a pain to pick up full of smoothie! I love that you can clean it in itself – just add water and a drop of detergent. I can’t wait to see what else this bad boy can do! More fun to come.

I broke for lunch around 11:30, quite shocked that my breakfast held me from 5:30 – 6 hours. When I’m doing stuff on my feet I don’t think about food and only stop for lunch when I’m really hungry.

I didn’t know what to have for lunch, but I knew I wanted kabocha. I ate a few pieces cold while debating what to make!

IMG_4380 (640x427)

I finally decided I should BLEND something for lunch. I surveyed the fridge and decided to blend up this crazy mix:

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup garbanzo beans
  • 1/2 banana
  • 2 handfuls spinach
  • ~1 tsp agave
  • ~1/2 tsp cinnamon

IMG_4383 (640x427)

Bean + Spinach Soup!?

IMG_4386 (640x427)

Drizzled with more agave

IMG_4394 (640x427)

It was awesome!!!!!!!! I could definitely taste the garbanzos, but the banana + spinach sweetened it enough to be really good

IMG_4393 (640x427)

Dontcha just love that color!?

IMG_4396 (640x427)

Of course the squash made its appearance – along with a carrot + a little PB

IMG_4391 (640x427)

This was THE PERFECT lunch for my taste buds today!

IMG_4402 (640x427)

And the sun shined in!

IMG_4407 (427x640)

IMG_4387 (640x427)

It’s so pretty and warm out I opened the patio door!!!! <3 North Carolina

IMG_4408 (427x640)

So glad you guys liked the Create Your Day + Share Our Strength campaign! It’s ongoing, so make some more bowls :)

Continuing my happy day off with a little computer work and then headed to the gym for a workout. Wish I could have ran outside today because it’s so nice, but my feet need to recover from those 8 miles!

We’re going to be in the process of moving soon…I wish I had your organization skills!

2 Heather (Heather's Dish) January 25, 2010 at 2:02 pm

gorgeous soup! i would be scared to eat it just because it’s so pretty!

way to go on the organization, too…if only I could be the same way! good luck with the house hunting and selling! :)

3 Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg January 25, 2010 at 2:02 pm

I LOVE my vitamix– you are a LUCKY DUCK to get a free one!!

I was wondering where Matt was this weekend…thought maybe he was in the dog house 😉

Looks like you’re making great progress on the packing!

4 Megan January 25, 2010 at 2:03 pm

Nice work on getting a head start on the packing!! And i’m SUPERRRR jealous of the vitamix!!

5 Madeline @ greensandjeans January 25, 2010 at 2:03 pm

How exciting about the move! You are definitely a smart cookie to start packing and getting organized now. Moving is one of my least favorite things, but if I was as on top of things as you guys are, maybe I wouldn’t mind it so much!

6 Lauren @ Eater not a runner January 25, 2010 at 2:03 pm

That is so exciting about the bakery! And good work on being so productive, that is awesome!

I am super jealous of your vitamix. I would LOVE one of those things.

7 Lily @ Lily's Health Pad January 25, 2010 at 2:04 pm

I’m impressed by your organizational skills! I’m also jealous of your VitaMix!

8 Jessica @ How Sweet January 25, 2010 at 2:05 pm

My hubby never lets me blog about when he isn’t home either. :) This is coming up so quickly for you guys!!

9 Jamie January 25, 2010 at 2:05 pm

I LOOVE those kind of mornings when you are just “in the zone”. congrats on getting all packed up – you have so many exciting changes coming up in your life!!

10 Kristine January 25, 2010 at 2:06 pm

Good for you for being smart and not telling the world you are home alone!! I always wonder if more popular bloggers worry about their safety!

11 Jil January 25, 2010 at 2:07 pm

Productive!! and that’s so exciting about your move! I hope it goes smoooothly!

12 Jessie January 25, 2010 at 2:09 pm

Your motivation to get cleaned and packed up is inspiring!

13 Food Makes Fun Fuel January 25, 2010 at 2:09 pm

You’re so organized! I wish I was like that when I’m moving

14 Foy Update - Cook. Garden. Write. Repeat. January 25, 2010 at 2:13 pm

That’s the problem with photos in magazines like Real Simple they don’t have the clutter that daily life creates.

I like to myself as able to live very simply. I still don’t own more than my car can hold. (Granted I own a car and it’s a 1993 Park Avenue – which is huge, so I do have stuff.) Everytime a I move (which seems to be about every six months right now) I pare down and donate or gift away my things and I always feel so much better.

I keep only the quality stuff I really want and suddenly I feel like I own really nice things. Weeding out the cheap stuff means I only keep the best. I hope when I get grounded in one spot I’ll be able to let go of things this easily. But I know that’s a side effect of having space. Once I have it, I’ll fill it up.

15 [email protected] January 25, 2010 at 2:17 pm

Yes, my husband and I used PODS when we moved from Nevada to California. Like you we needed to seel and then move in with someone before we could move to California. PODS was great. We packed what we could live without and then we packed up everything when we sold our place. Then they met at us at our new place with the POD. It was GREAT!

Good luck!
What an adventure….

16 Allison (Eat Clean Live Green) January 25, 2010 at 2:19 pm

You’re so organized!

Do you think Vitamix is worth the price?

17 Kath January 25, 2010 at 7:06 pm

If you use a blender frequently, then definitely. If you rarely use yours, then I wouldn’t invest in one.

18 Tracey January 25, 2010 at 2:21 pm

I’m going through an organization of my kitchen right now. It is a lot of work trying to organize everything and make all the appliances fit. Especially in a small condo kitchen.

19 Cynthia (It All Changes) January 25, 2010 at 2:23 pm

Because we move so much I have to be super organized when packing and storing. I use totes because boxes get to beat up with all the moving we do but I label on masking tape so I can remove or just tape over when we move again.

I love that you want it to look like Real Simple. That is always my goal.

20 Lauren January 25, 2010 at 2:25 pm

Okay, I’m so tempted to go out and buy a Vitamix just because of the cleaning feature. I hate taking apart my Cuisinart to clean it. Such a pain in the butt.

21 Erica January 25, 2010 at 2:27 pm

Hey Kath — I used a POD a few years back during a delayed move (like your own, we lived with the parents until our house was ready).

Advice: Don’t put clothes in the POD. I too had one during the summer, so thought it was a good idea to put all the winter clothes in the POD. A bunch of our sweaters had holes in them when I unpacked them, and I think it’s because the storage facility wasn’t bug-proof. If anything, maybe treat your clothes before putting them in the POD (isn’t that what our grandma’s moth balls were for???)

22 Ali January 25, 2010 at 2:28 pm

You inspired me to try overnight oats this morning, and wow I’m in love!!! I was always kind of scared by the idea of them, but they were incredible! I loved having instant breakfast. They kept me full through my classes all morning and my workout, where I was able to run my fastest mile in a while- 6:45! oats=fab :)

23 Alicia January 25, 2010 at 2:30 pm

Nice present! 😀
Where did you get your corner shelf? I’m looking for one just like it.

24 Kath January 25, 2010 at 7:07 pm

It’s part of the JC Penny Lindon Street line and I reviewed it for the blog 2 summers ago.

25 Amanda January 25, 2010 at 2:33 pm

Kath! I have got to say, after reading your blog for a year – you def. have the best home style! I love how comfortable and chic everything in your home is, and all the colors balance so well against them! I really enjoy when you post pictures of your home and dishes, so cozy! :)

26 Kath January 25, 2010 at 7:07 pm

Thanks :)

27 Amanda January 25, 2010 at 2:38 pm

From one Real Simple-inspired organizer to another…in addition to labeling boxes on the outside, I also kept an inventory of what was on the inside – I had a notebook next to me as I filled a box and wrote down everything – Kitchen 1: [list here], etc. This is key when you put stuff into storage so that if the unthinkable happens and a box gets lost and you need to file a claim, you know the contents of the missing box. Luckily that did not happen to me and my friends just tease me about my lists. But they work!! I am with you all the way… happy packing :)

28 Kath January 25, 2010 at 7:07 pm

Great idea!

29 anne January 25, 2010 at 2:44 pm

I used PODS a few years ago. It was very convenient. A little expensive, but worth it in the end. The best part is you can take as long as you want to load and unload the pod. Good customer service too.

30 Kathleen January 25, 2010 at 2:45 pm

Oh that must feel awesome to have your house so organized! I love the idea of packing with an x or check mark to organize your things for different times of use…I need to do that with my upcoming move!

31 Anne [email protected] Weigh of Life January 25, 2010 at 2:46 pm

You’ve been such a busy bee!

32 amber January 25, 2010 at 2:47 pm

Wow your organizing looks so good!! What a great feeling! Good luck putting the house on the market!! Ahh the vitamix, has been on my wish list for a few years now. I am very happy to see you found it amazing.

33 debbie monaco January 25, 2010 at 2:49 pm

Suggestions on moving: always pack your plates on there sides with plenty of tissue on the bottom; why..because packing them flat causes breakage; also when packing up the kitchen dishes and anything that is special to you…you a very thick box..they make china boxes that you can purchase at U-haul or any moving company. Be sure that you layer each level sufficiently! and use two pieces of packing paper with your dishes. Always pack the heaviest items on bottom of box and move to the lightest as you top your box.

I have moved 9 times in 10 years and have never had a broken dish yet! Yes, I packed everything myself. You can also use towels, hand towels to cushion your layers as well. Also make sure that the spaces in the box are filled with either paper, or towels…whatever…again it can cause breakage. I have used the pods before…they are excellent…they can take and store them or leave them near you…

34 Eileen January 25, 2010 at 2:51 pm

I am in complete awe of your organizational skills. COMPLETE.

Your house is very pretty, and I’m sure it will sell quickly. Good luck!

35 Cindy January 25, 2010 at 2:53 pm

Kath–you should shop around for different PODS type companies in your area, there are more than one. When we needed to store stuff we used SAM ( because we found it was the cheapest option for us. I think even stores like Home Depot have options too.

36 megan January 25, 2010 at 2:53 pm

you are so organized! I’m very impressed. i’m going to check back here if we ever move to use all your ideas. your house is really beautiful and always so neat and clean. I’m sure it will sell quickly!

37 Faye January 25, 2010 at 2:54 pm

I started packing 1.5 months in advance- our closing date kept on being postponed. I thought the hardest part was packing up the fridge- despite getting rid of a lot of old dressings, sauces, etc., we still had a lot of things we wanted to bring back to the new house. Good luck packing! My cat was my company- cept she kept on playing with the bubble wrap!

38 Courtney January 25, 2010 at 2:55 pm

We used a few PODS when we were in transition between places and LOVED it. Although I agree with another poster that it was a little expensive, but I think it is worth it. I felt the items were secure and we had no damage to any of our items.
Great job on staging the house to sell it! It is the best thing to do before you show it.
adventures in tri-ing

39 Calla January 25, 2010 at 2:55 pm

Kath, I love your blog! Don’t have one of my own, but I follow yours and a few others fairly regularly and just love it….they are great to sip coffee to in the morning :)

I saw that you are moving to Charlottesville, VA and just wanted to say (of course, I’m not sure how much you already know about the area…) that it is a fantastic place to live! The restaurants there are AMAZING, biking on the Blue Ridge is beautiful and it’s a wonderful place to run since there are so many hills! I am a graduate student just an hour away, but one of my best friends from undergraduate is from there and I loved going to visit her in the summers. I have heard that there are so wonderful farmer’s markets in the summer, too. ZaZu’s has big, yummy wraps (that you can get as a salad) and Bodo’s Bagels are MUST tries (freshly baked every day, and you can get basically anything on them that you’d like!) for when y’all get there.

I hope that everything goes smoothly and that you really love Charlottesville and Virginia!

40 Kath January 25, 2010 at 7:08 pm

I’m so excited!

41 Penny (Blonde Bibliophile) January 25, 2010 at 2:56 pm

Your house is always so nice and neat, but you constantly strive to make it better. My house is a train wreck!!!
I love, LOVE, all your cute little bowls.

42 Lisa (bakebikeblog) January 25, 2010 at 2:57 pm

Congrats on the organising – it all looks so great. I love the cupboards you have your bowl in :)
OOOOH and GREAT lunch! I The colours are amazing.

43 Freya @ January 25, 2010 at 3:00 pm

You seem like me – I have all my cupboards at home crazy organised and I like them to be in size order etc etc – drives my family mad, but I’m the only one who knos wherre everything is! They’ll dig around in the freezer for age slooking for something, and I can just say ‘2nd drawer, on the left’..:D It’s very useful 😛 thouhg probs not to them….
Have a good rest of the day!

44 Alyson January 25, 2010 at 3:02 pm

Interesting smoothie combo, I would have never thought to throw in Garbanzos.. will have to give it a try!

45 Jessie (Vegan-minded) January 25, 2010 at 3:05 pm

Beautiful green smoothie! How lucky of you to score a VitaMix, they are the best ever! I have an older model and it works amazingly well for green smoothies and just about anything I can think of. Enjoy it! :)

46 Crystal @ chipped nails and all January 25, 2010 at 3:06 pm

please tell me Matt wasn’t in Target on Saturday….I SWEAR I saw someone that looked EXACTLY like him! rewind back in time and here’s the convo in my head: “hmm…that looks like matt. except he doesn’t look as tall as he seems in pictures. maybe kath isn’t that tall (don’t worry, I’m vertically challenged too!), so he just looks extra tall. hmmmm…must not be matt afterall.” end convo.

totally random but I just remembered that I saw his look-alike once I read this post :) hope the “research” went well! I’m already excited to see where you end up finding a home for the bakery :)

47 Kath January 25, 2010 at 7:08 pm

As I said in my email to you, THAT WAS HIM!!!!!!!

48 JENNA January 25, 2010 at 3:08 pm

your lunch looks so beautiful and fun! I love the bowl your smoothie is in!

I hope Matt had a good time in C’ville.

Packing is such a pain when you are unorganized!! Hopefully it will go smoothly for you since your on top of it! :)

49 Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather January 25, 2010 at 3:08 pm

Wow great work! I love waking up early and accomplishing sooo much. I’ve heard so much good stuff about vitamix but haven’t got to try one out yet. Sounds like it works like a charm though.

50 Mara @ What's For Dinner? January 25, 2010 at 3:13 pm

Will you come to my house and organize for me?! Sheesh! You’re a master!

51 The Healthy Hostess January 25, 2010 at 3:14 pm

I was in “nesting” mode this weekend to get ready for the baby but the results were the same! Check out my spice cupboard!
Great work!

52 bobbi January 25, 2010 at 3:16 pm

Love this post! I love organizing and what better time to get rid of stuff when your moving. I have a question about your white corner cabinet, where oh where did you get it!!! I have been looking for somthing like that to put all my bloggin bowls and plates :) Also I adore your home, if I was closer Hubby and i would be moving in!!!

53 Kath January 25, 2010 at 7:08 pm

JC Penny Lindon Street line!

I always thought would you ever say on the blog that you are home alone. Now I know you don’t :)

You are super organized!!!!!

55 Marisa @ Vinyasa Mama January 25, 2010 at 3:25 pm

OMG thank you for the inspirations to ORGANIZE effectively! We just moved a few weeks ago and I’m 7 months pregnant and completely frustrated by the whole process. But your post has inspired me to get with it b/c I know I will feel so much better in the end and that will be worth it. THANKS!! (btw, if you want to come to my house in Charleston and HELP, I wouldn’t complain! just kidding…sort of)

56 Kath January 25, 2010 at 7:09 pm

Pay me and host me, and I will!

57 Chelsea January 25, 2010 at 3:26 pm

You have a lot of dishes and bars! It’s awesome!!!! love all the pictures. Have fun with that Vitamix and YAY for a day off that you weren’t expecting.

58 The Paris Food Blague January 25, 2010 at 3:31 pm

wow those are some serous organizational skillz!

ive never thought of milk and beans together, but i guess beans and cream work….in any case, looks healthy! enjoy the weather, lucky girl!

59 Ginna January 25, 2010 at 3:31 pm

I second that! U guys have a lot of dishes for two people! Nice. I would love to add some more to our collection but no space!

60 Jasmine @ Eat Move Write January 25, 2010 at 3:35 pm

I do love that color. How excited you must be. That’s so nice your MIL is letting you live with her!

61 Cassie January 25, 2010 at 3:36 pm

kath – not only do you inspire me to leave a healthier life, but you are so organized and meticulous that it inspires me in my own house as well. i definitely had a kerf-style dance party and cleaning session on saturday, and it was lovely :)

good luck with the move! at this rate you’ll be packed before you even put your house on the market!

ps i’m so jealous of your NC weather. here in PA it’s 60* but raining… and will drop back to 40* tomorrow :(

62 Carrie H January 25, 2010 at 3:39 pm

Since you mention it, I gotta tell you that bubble wrap turns 50 today! I heard a funny story about it on NPR this morning. Apparently, the original invetors thought they were inventing a new kind of wall paper! He he, maybe some of your prospective home buyers might like to see you try that out! 😉

63 Kath January 25, 2010 at 7:09 pm

Haha – what a coincidence!

64 Leslie January 25, 2010 at 3:40 pm

Mad organizational skillz! 😉

We used a POD and were very happy. My only advice would be to be sure that everything is packed as evenly as possible, both horizontally and vertically– if you ever see how they move them around (I highly recommend watching, it’s pretty cool) you’ll see that the loading and unloading process does tilt the POD to-and-fro… and things can shift. Don’t pile up uneven stacks, even against the walls, unless you tie them to secure them.

Good luck with the packing!

65 Haleigh January 25, 2010 at 3:49 pm

So exciting about the upcoming move and the bakery!!! :)

66 Ashley G. January 25, 2010 at 3:52 pm

I agree with Calla above: Charlottesville is a GREAT place to live! I lived there for two years while attending UVA for Graduate School. In addition to Zazu and Bodo’s you will love Mudhouse Coffee, which I visit every time I go down there. It is a fanatic running town with a great running store called Ragged Mountain Running. There are also a TON of great food shops in the purple Market building, a fresh market each weeked during the warmer months and restaurants galore!!!! I can’t wait to come visit the Great Harvest Bread you guys are opening! I just went to the one in Herndon, VA last week because you inspired me!! Their spinach and feta bread is very savory and delicious. I wish you all the best with packing! Let me know if you need and recommendations about anything Cville!

67 Kath January 25, 2010 at 7:09 pm

I repeat, I’m excited!! :)

68 Allison K January 25, 2010 at 3:55 pm

I SO need to do that to my cabinets, even though we aren’t moving. My problem is keeping them that way!

69 katie davis January 25, 2010 at 3:56 pm

I noticed yesterday you mentioned you were training…are you running a 1/2 marathon coming up or thinking of signing up for one? I am running the rock n’ roll half in Dallas and it’s my first running race ever, so I am a bit nervous. Good luck to you if you are!!!

70 Kath January 25, 2010 at 7:09 pm

Yes, casually training for a half in April!

71 Brandy January 25, 2010 at 4:08 pm

We just a POD last year and had a horrible experience. The POD storage facility wasn’t secure! Our lock was broken and almost everything was stolen. They never even caught the thieves because there were no cameras.

I learned a few lessons from that awful experience. Take pictures as you load the POD so you can document everything that goes in it. Also make an inventory list. And definitely, definitely, definitely, make sure the POD storage facility in your area is staffed and secure with cameras. They lead you to believe that they all are, but I learned otherwise. Good luck!

72 Kath January 25, 2010 at 7:10 pm

OH NO!!!

73 Christie @ Honoring Health January 25, 2010 at 4:08 pm

Wow, you are the organizing queen! Go you!

74 Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] January 25, 2010 at 4:29 pm

The soup smoothie is gorgeous! I’m glad to know you are on the cautious side too about not divulging too much info to the world (like being home alone). This is the Internet after all.

75 Kendel January 25, 2010 at 4:29 pm

Oh I am jealous! A free VitaMix and access to Pandora? I love living in Europe but it’s posts like this that make me miss home! Congrats on the packing and productivity! You should try to get a magazine in now that you’re all spic and span- I bet you’re home is perfect for pictures!

76 Tara January 25, 2010 at 4:30 pm

I’m addicted to Pandora. I can’t see what station you’re listening to but as of now I’m jamming to the best of the 80’s. TRY IT!

78 Ursula January 25, 2010 at 4:31 pm

Congratulations on a VERY productive morning!

Your pink tableware is lovely – my grandmother has exactly the same style, makes me think of her when I see them

79 Heather @ Side of Sneakers January 25, 2010 at 4:36 pm

What a fun day of organizing! And lots of good stuff coming up in your near future :)

80 Meredith January 25, 2010 at 4:43 pm

My mom lives just outside the Cville area and whenever I’m home I much prefer to visit Cville than stay at her house (I consider the area on the other side of Afton mountain a little … middle of nowhere). I have tons of family there, too, so I will tell them all to go to Great Harvest when y’all open it up! You will like Cville, though, and especially the mountains and the hiking just a few minutes away.

81 Barbara(Blood, Sweat and Heels) January 25, 2010 at 4:44 pm

I’m still trying to choose my next food processor/blender….

The vitamix is leading but …hmmmm unsure:)

Wow I could not be more jealous! It is pouring and windy in New York today :( my umbrella turned inside out 3 times on the way to work — not cool

83 Erin January 25, 2010 at 4:51 pm

How fun to have a freebie day. Great job on getting some packing done. It’s da worstest. :(

84 Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) January 25, 2010 at 5:01 pm

I am so beyond impressed by your organizational skills. I, too, want my house to look like a spread from Real Simple. 😀

85 Allison January 25, 2010 at 5:02 pm

wow your move is so soon! good luck, and i think you should try to be on House Hunters :)

86 Kath January 25, 2010 at 7:10 pm

I would certainly like to when we look for our next house!

87 Fei Fei January 25, 2010 at 5:05 pm

My goodness! Are you sure you don’t want to become a professional organizer? 😉 Your kitchen looks fantastic!

And I can’t stop staring at that soup – Loooove that colour, so pretty!

88 Kath January 25, 2010 at 7:11 pm

I DO want to be a pro organizer!!

89 beki January 25, 2010 at 5:20 pm

You’ll be in my neck of the woods… well same state at least… is there a reason you Charlottesville? Or did Great Harvest want to develop in that region?

90 Kath January 25, 2010 at 7:11 pm

We picked it for all of the above! Green, healthy, foodie, running, small town, charming, university and more!

91 Katie January 25, 2010 at 5:27 pm

My husband and I are moving in the fall, so I am in the process of organizing, pre-packing, and decluttering as well. Any tips?

92 K January 25, 2010 at 5:41 pm

Oh wow!! Your big move is going to be here so soon! Good luck getting everything in order!

93 Chris January 25, 2010 at 5:43 pm

I love my new toy, my Vita-Mix!!! I love to wash granny smith apples (core, seeds, and peelings), just cut the stems off and add lemon juice. Instant absolutely delicious applesauce. You can or cannot cook it when you’re done. It’s great not cooked.

94 Maria January 25, 2010 at 5:44 pm

I love all of your dishes!

95 Gracie @ Girl Meets Health January 25, 2010 at 5:44 pm

YUM!! I love all-veggie meals. So refreshing and energizing.

Your kitchen looks great! I love cleaning/organizing the house. However, if I get started with one little project, I end up raiding the entire house on an organizing spree. I guess there could be worse things =)

96 Ariffa January 25, 2010 at 5:58 pm

organized kitchen! I’m jealous.
and that soup is beeautiful!!!

97 [email protected] January 25, 2010 at 6:24 pm

I haaaate moving except for the cleansing of getting rid of stuff! Good luck with selling the house!

98 Jenna January 25, 2010 at 6:26 pm

Glad you had a very productive day!
The bakery and moving must be so exciting :)

99 Jenn (www. ) January 25, 2010 at 6:26 pm

Holy smoly! SO organized!! 😯 I’m actually rearranging our kitchen, too. It’s unreal how much stuff accumulates in a short amount of time, especially food!

LOVE your VIta-Mix!!! I’ve been eying them for awhile now. I hope to be getting one soon, I hear great stuff about them.

Your cube of green soup looks adorable LOL

100 Jules @ eatdrinklivelearn January 25, 2010 at 6:57 pm

My goodness, you’re so organized!! Any chance I could hire you to come pack up our apartment for us? :)

101 Kath January 25, 2010 at 7:07 pm

Thanks for all of the ADVICE!!!!!!!!

102 Jessica @ The Process of Healing January 25, 2010 at 7:20 pm

That soup is such a cool idea!!

And you have the neatest, cleanest house I have EVER seen. And the prettiest bowls and plates :)

103 Kasey January 25, 2010 at 7:21 pm

Kath, you have the BEST bowls!

104 Elizabeth (thelongweigh) January 25, 2010 at 7:24 pm

I looove your home style! I see that you got that adorable small cabinet from JC Penney, where did you get the big one you have in your dining room? I am looking for something just like that for my own!

105 Kath January 25, 2010 at 7:31 pm

Crate + Barrel

106 Mary (Food Fit & Fun) January 25, 2010 at 7:28 pm

I love that white tower you have with the different shelves…it looks pottery-barn-ish. I was wondering where Matt was this past weekend….that is awesome news! Also, I want a vitamix!!

107 Megan January 25, 2010 at 7:29 pm

Ahhh…the feeling of being organized. It is the best. I should do the same with my cabinets. Mine are getting out of control. Oh, and I am so jealous about the Vita-Mixer. I so need one of those.

108 Tricia January 25, 2010 at 7:30 pm

I found pods to be a thousand dollars more than upackit when I was moving from Chicago to Los Angeles. There website is / I had a good experience dealing with the upackit people than the pod people. Hope this helps, I just think everyone should have options. I paid about 1700 to move across country and the pod people wanted to charge over 3000.

109 Erin January 25, 2010 at 7:36 pm

My husband and I used a Pod while we moved from an apartment at the end of 2008 until we move into our house in October. He (the expert Pod packer) says to pack everything in the Pod securely, don’t leave any space for things to shift! The Pod guy told him we had one of the best packed Pods he’d ever seen and I the only damage I ended up with was a broken plate, a broken glass, and a few light scratches on my furniture.

110 Sarah (OC2Seattle) January 25, 2010 at 7:44 pm

Ohm the joys of moving. Good luck and here’s hoping your house sells quickly!

111 Deanna - The Unnatural Mother January 25, 2010 at 7:51 pm

Good luck with your move, and the bakery!! Exciting stuff!

112 Meg January 25, 2010 at 7:51 pm

I love Charlottesville- I try to go down atleast four times a year for the food, the stores, and to see my family! If you need any contancts email me! I LOVE c’ville!!!

113 RK January 25, 2010 at 7:56 pm

I am so jealous of the NC weather. I am looking at graduate schools out there because I love the change of seasons, but HATE Minnesota winters. I would love to be able to open my windows in January! Hope you had a great rest of your day.

114 Naomi(onefitfoodie) January 25, 2010 at 7:58 pm

good luck with the move kath!!! you are so super organized so I know it will go smoothly :)

115 Ashley January 25, 2010 at 8:01 pm

Photographing GREEN food might be my favorite…and then orange :) I love that bowl and how it’s packed to the very top!! I am loving my vitamix as well!!!!! The range of settings are uh-mazing! We lived at my bro in law + sis in laws for 3.5 months while more than 3/4 of our things were in storage. It was SO nice to finally get it all back!!!

116 Claire January 25, 2010 at 8:14 pm

It *is* scary to be without your guy when you are used to having him around! I’d def lock the doors all the time without mine!

PODS I don’t know about really, but moving around and having to move ~every 6 months for five years…that is my specialty! If you got questions, let me know!

The smoothie made with the vita-mix — so wish I had one, right now I just have a lame ol’ blender — was is really sweet? I can’t imagine the taste of chickpeas, spinach, naner, and agave together!

117 lynn (The Actors Diet) January 25, 2010 at 8:31 pm

so jealous of your vitamix!!! my coblogger christy has one and swears by it.

118 Kate (This American Wife) January 25, 2010 at 9:08 pm

We moved last year, and the best money we spent was $100 or so on moving boxes from an online moving supply store. It seems like a waste of money since you can easily find boxes from craigslist/ stores/ friends, etc… but the wonderful thing about buying boxes is that you get exactly the right sizes (hanging boxes for coats/clothes, boxes for artwork, big boxes, little boxes) AND they all stack nicely and neatly in a moving truck (or pod). This also means boxes are much less likely to get bent out of shape, or stacked so pressure points are wrong, which can lead to your stuff being broken! Totally worth the cost! Good luck!

119 Ashley J January 25, 2010 at 9:18 pm

I am such a dork, but I love before and after photos of organization.
I think I have OCD…lol.

120 greenbean January 25, 2010 at 9:45 pm

aahhhh, vitamix.

121 Andrea January 25, 2010 at 10:06 pm

I hope Matt’s trip was successful! I’m so excited for you guys to get here!!! :) BTW, we used a POD when we bought our house and had an overlap period between finishing some renovations and moving in. It was AWESOME!!!

122 Katie January 25, 2010 at 10:08 pm

Sooo jealous of the vitamix. Way to get right in there with the beans right away! I’ve seen some people use beans in their green smoothies, but I don’t know if I would be brave enough. Did the vitamix heat it up too? I really really want one. I use my magic bullet at least once a day.

123 Amy January 26, 2010 at 7:08 am

Kath, Im moving to Charlottesville this summer too! I keep telling everyone how excited I am that one of my favorite bloggers will be there now– and how amazing it will be to have a Great Harvest in town!!
Im sure that your move will go smoothly as you seem so so organized. Im dreading the physical move aspect as well but keep in mind it will be worth it in the end!

124 Kath January 26, 2010 at 8:49 pm

Oh fun!!!! We can be friends!!! If you do any research on neighborhoods or apartments or house rentals, please share :)

125 Ash @ Good Taste. Healthy Me January 26, 2010 at 9:09 am

Oh I just love being organized! After a good cleaning/organizing day I always feel amazing!

126 Jasmine (Sweet and Fit) January 26, 2010 at 9:32 am

Charlottesville, VA??!?! Kath! I’m so excited! I used to life there – my boyfriend went to UVA and we still go there every once in a while. We know a lot about the area – I’d love to share some info if you are interested =)

127 Kath January 26, 2010 at 8:50 pm
