Pack It In

I have had the BEST morning!!! This house hasn’t felt this empty since we moved in 3.25 years ago and I love it! Since I was ready to start my day at 6AM, I got right to work packaging up a lot of our superfluous decor and kitchen stuff. I’m assuming that we’ll sell our house in a shorter-rather-than-later timeframe, so I’m hoping to be as organized as possible going into the move since I’ll have to do everything on Sat + Sun while in my internship. I also want every cabinet that could possibly be peeked in by a buyer to look like a page in Real Simple

 this !

If I haven’t mentioned it before, our plan is to finish up some renovations in the next two weeks (new shower door, new bathroom fixtures, pressure washing, carpets cleaned) and put our house on the market on February 16!! Our plan is when we sell our house to move into Karen’s condo with her for a few months while I finish my internship (July 2) and then we’re headed to to Charlottesville around August 1! Our stuff is going to go into a POD. If anyone has used PODS before, please give me any advice!

This stuff is so hard to pack because it’s big, heavy and breakable!

IMG_4368 (640x427)

Luckily I receive lots of packages in this house, and I’ve been saving boxes (and bubble wrap!) for a few months now (you can tell the sun wasn’t even up when I started!)

IMG_4367 (640x427)

My company:

IMG_4370 (640x427)

The end result [many hours later!!]. All properly packaged and labeled!

IMG_4376 (640x427)

Boxes with an X aren’t to be opened until we OWN another house. Boxes with a check are items I’d like to use while we rent for a while.

IMG_4378 (640x427)

During this process I also reorganized the kitchen so the same stuff is in the same cabinets. You see, we have all of our oatmeal bowls in one cabinet and then all tiny bowls in another and plates in various places so I moved them all to be grouped together. I hope Matt doesn’t get lost when he comes home!

[BY THE WAY, Matt has been in CHARLOTTESVILLE this weekend doing research for the bakery!!! I didn’t want to say anything since I would then be telling the world I was home alone. It was a lonely and scary-at-times weekend, but I also had a blast being a single girl 🙂 He comes home today!)

Piles of bowls now sorted… [and color coded 😉 ]

IMG_4374 (427x640) IMG_4415 (427x640)

Used to be half bars n stuff and half appliances. Now ALL appliances

IMG_4372 (640x427) IMG_4411 (640x427)

Now ALL bars n stuff ( used to be half appliances)

IMG_4412 (427x640)

Out of control tea, now sorted

IMG_4371 (640x427) IMG_4418 (640x427)

Cabinets a mix of stuff

IMG_4373 (640x427)

Now ALL bowls

IMG_4413 (640x427)

Now ALL plates (plus mugs + glasses)

IMG_4414 (640x427)

This cabinet used to be so crowded I was afraid to take things out of it! Most of that is now in boxes and it’s so much prettier

IMG_4416 (427x640)

I also collected goodies to give to my friends in a donation this weekend! Good stuff too!

Something that was UNPACKED – a Vita-mix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The CIA Professional Series.

IMG_4377 (640x427)

The company sent me one to review. I have been SO curious about these since I learned about them through the blog world a few years ago. What could be so amazing about a blender!?

IMG_4381 (427x640)

Ok, OK! They have me convinced!! This blender is magical. There wasn’t a hair of un-blended food when I was finished. I love how lightweight the top half is – my Cuisinart blender must weigh 20 pounds and is a pain to pick up full of smoothie! I love that you can clean it in itself – just add water and a drop of detergent. I can’t wait to see what else this bad boy can do! More fun to come.

I broke for lunch around 11:30, quite shocked that my breakfast held me from 5:30 – 6 hours. When I’m doing stuff on my feet I don’t think about food and only stop for lunch when I’m really hungry.

I didn’t know what to have for lunch, but I knew I wanted kabocha. I ate a few pieces cold while debating what to make!

IMG_4380 (640x427)

I finally decided I should BLEND something for lunch. I surveyed the fridge and decided to blend up this crazy mix:

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup garbanzo beans
  • 1/2 banana
  • 2 handfuls spinach
  • ~1 tsp agave
  • ~1/2 tsp cinnamon

IMG_4383 (640x427)

Bean + Spinach Soup!?

IMG_4386 (640x427)

Drizzled with more agave

IMG_4394 (640x427)

It was awesome!!!!!!!! I could definitely taste the garbanzos, but the banana + spinach sweetened it enough to be really good

IMG_4393 (640x427)

Dontcha just love that color!?

IMG_4396 (640x427)

Of course the squash made its appearance – along with a carrot + a little PB

IMG_4391 (640x427)

This was THE PERFECT lunch for my taste buds today!

IMG_4402 (640x427)

And the sun shined in!

IMG_4407 (427x640)

IMG_4387 (640x427)

It’s so pretty and warm out I opened the patio door!!!! <3 North Carolina

IMG_4408 (427x640)

So glad you guys liked the Create Your Day + Share Our Strength campaign! It’s ongoing, so make some more bowls 🙂

Continuing my happy day off with a little computer work and then headed to the gym for a workout. Wish I could have ran outside today because it’s so nice, but my feet need to recover from those 8 miles!

That’s the problem with photos in magazines like Real Simple they don’t have the clutter that daily life creates.

I like to myself as able to live very simply. I still don’t own more than my car can hold. (Granted I own a car and it’s a 1993 Park Avenue – which is huge, so I do have stuff.) Everytime a I move (which seems to be about every six months right now) I pare down and donate or gift away my things and I always feel so much better.

I keep only the quality stuff I really want and suddenly I feel like I own really nice things. Weeding out the cheap stuff means I only keep the best. I hope when I get grounded in one spot I’ll be able to let go of things this easily. But I know that’s a side effect of having space. Once I have it, I’ll fill it up.

Yes, my husband and I used PODS when we moved from Nevada to California. Like you we needed to seel and then move in with someone before we could move to California. PODS was great. We packed what we could live without and then we packed up everything when we sold our place. Then they met at us at our new place with the POD. It was GREAT!

    Good luck!

Because we move so much I have to be super organized when packing and storing. I use totes because boxes get to beat up with all the moving we do but I label on masking tape so I can remove or just tape over when we move again.

I love that you want it to look like Real Simple. That is always my goal.

Hey Kath — I used a POD a few years back during a delayed move (like your own, we lived with the parents until our house was ready).

Advice: Don’t put clothes in the POD. I too had one during the summer, so thought it was a good idea to put all the winter clothes in the POD. A bunch of our sweaters had holes in them when I unpacked them, and I think it’s because the storage facility wasn’t bug-proof. If anything, maybe treat your clothes before putting them in the POD (isn’t that what our grandma’s moth balls were for???)

From one Real Simple-inspired organizer to another…in addition to labeling boxes on the outside, I also kept an inventory of what was on the inside – I had a notebook next to me as I filled a box and wrote down everything – Kitchen 1: [list here], etc. This is key when you put stuff into storage so that if the unthinkable happens and a box gets lost and you need to file a claim, you know the contents of the missing box. Luckily that did not happen to me and my friends just tease me about my lists. But they work!! I am with you all the way… happy packing 🙂

Suggestions on moving: always pack your plates on there sides with plenty of tissue on the bottom; why..because packing them flat causes breakage; also when packing up the kitchen dishes and anything that is special to you…you a very thick box..they make china boxes that you can purchase at U-haul or any moving company. Be sure that you layer each level sufficiently! and use two pieces of packing paper with your dishes. Always pack the heaviest items on bottom of box and move to the lightest as you top your box.

I have moved 9 times in 10 years and have never had a broken dish yet! Yes, I packed everything myself. You can also use towels, hand towels to cushion your layers as well. Also make sure that the spaces in the box are filled with either paper, or towels…whatever…again it can cause breakage. I have used the pods before…they are excellent…they can take and store them or leave them near you…

I thought the hardest part was packing up the fridge- despite getting rid of a lot of old dressings, sauces, etc., we still had a lot of things we wanted to bring back to the new house. Good luck packing! My cat was my company- cept she kept on playing with the bubble wrap!

Kath, I love your blog! Don’t have one of my own, but I follow yours and a few others fairly regularly and just love it….they are great to sip coffee to in the morning 🙂

I saw that you are moving to Charlottesville, VA and just wanted to say (of course, I’m not sure how much you already know about the area…) that it is a fantastic place to live! The restaurants there are AMAZING, biking on the Blue Ridge is beautiful and it’s a wonderful place to run since there are so many hills! I am a graduate student just an hour away, but one of my best friends from undergraduate is from there and I loved going to visit her in the summers. I have heard that there are so wonderful farmer’s markets in the summer, too. ZaZu’s has big, yummy wraps (that you can get as a salad) and Bodo’s Bagels are MUST tries (freshly baked every day, and you can get basically anything on them that you’d like!) for when y’all get there.

I hope that everything goes smoothly and that you really love Charlottesville and Virginia!

(btw, if you want to come to my house in Charleston and HELP, I wouldn’t complain! just kidding…sort of)

Since you mention it, I gotta tell you that bubble wrap turns 50 today! I heard a funny story about it on NPR this morning. Apparently, the original invetors thought they were inventing a new kind of wall paper! He he, maybe some of your prospective home buyers might like to see you try that out! 😉

    Mad organizational skillz! 😉

We used a POD and were very happy. My only advice would be to be sure that everything is packed as evenly as possible, both horizontally and vertically– if you ever see how they move them around (I highly recommend watching, it’s pretty cool) you’ll see that the loading and unloading process does tilt the POD to-and-fro… and things can shift. Don’t pile up uneven stacks, even against the walls, unless you tie them to secure them.

    Good luck with the packing!

    Kath,
I agree with Calla above: Charlottesville is a GREAT place to live! I lived there for two years while attending UVA for Graduate School. In addition to Zazu and Bodo’s you will love Mudhouse Coffee, which I visit every time I go down there. It is a fanatic running town with a great running store called Ragged Mountain Running. There are also a TON of great food shops in the purple Market building, a fresh market each weeked during the warmer months and restaurants galore!!!! I can’t wait to come visit the Great Harvest Bread you guys are opening! I just went to the one in Herndon, VA last week because you inspired me!! Their spinach and feta bread is very savory and delicious. I wish you all the best with packing! Let me know if you need and recommendations about anything Cville!

We just a POD last year and had a horrible experience. The POD storage facility wasn’t secure! Our lock was broken and almost everything was stolen. They never even caught the thieves because there were no cameras.

I learned a few lessons from that awful experience. Take pictures as you load the POD so you can document everything that goes in it. Also make an inventory list. And definitely, definitely, definitely, make sure the POD storage facility in your area is staffed and secure with cameras. They lead you to believe that they all are, but I learned otherwise. Good luck!

I have tons of family there, too, so I will tell them all to go to Great Harvest when y’all open it up! You will like Cville, though, and especially the mountains and the hiking just a few minutes away.

I found pods to be a thousand dollars more than upackit when I was moving from Chicago to Los Angeles. There website is /www.upack.com/. I had a good experience dealing with the upackit people than the pod people. Hope this helps, I just think everyone should have options. I paid about 1700 to move across country and the pod people wanted to charge over 3000.

    Kath,

My husband and I used a Pod while we moved from an apartment at the end of 2008 until we move into our house in October. He (the expert Pod packer) says to pack everything in the Pod securely, don’t leave any space for things to shift! The Pod guy told him we had one of the best packed Pods he’d ever seen and I the only damage I ended up with was a broken plate, a broken glass, and a few light scratches on my furniture.

We moved last year, and the best money we spent was $100 or so on moving boxes from an online moving supply store. It seems like a waste of money since you can easily find boxes from craigslist/ stores/ friends, etc… but the wonderful thing about buying boxes is that you get exactly the right sizes (hanging boxes for coats/clothes, boxes for artwork, big boxes, little boxes) AND they all stack nicely and neatly in a moving truck (or pod). This also means boxes are much less likely to get bent out of shape, or stacked so pressure points are wrong, which can lead to your stuff being broken! Totally worth the cost! Good luck!
