Sweet Sweet Saturday

January 9, 2010

Oh Saturday how much I love thee now!!! I can LIVE again! And by live, I mean PLAY in my house. And by play in my house, I mean CLEAN!! Some people might think the thought of changing all the bedding and towels and doing 3 loads of laundry is a drag, but I was so thankful for an open morning to do it that I was whistling like Mary Poppins!

I woke up dreaming of our family at a beach house with waves crashing against it at 6:30. Guess my body clock is adjusting. I read emails and lounged in bed for a while, did my chores and came down to breakfast fit for a queen.

Seriously, this bowl of oats was over-the-top!

The Mix:

  • 1/3 cup oats, milk, water, pinch salt, tbsp chia seeds
  • 1/2 banana
  • TONS of pumpkin (I finished off a can – probably about a heaping half a cup)
  • Cinnamon + vanilla
  • Crumbled Banana Almond muffin
  • Maranatha, and a bonus Barney Butter blob when I got to the bottom

A chicken drumstick today, floating in peppermint creme and pumpkin spice mix (I’m almost finished with this pre-mixed blend and will move on to another half-caf blend :) ) The secret to the froth is 1) Heat your milk in the mug before you pour the coffee in and 2) Pour the coffee very slowly and horizontally from the french press

  • Play house
  • Go to the indoor playground (i.e. gym)
  • A sandwichlicious lunch
  • Shopping with Matt
  • Dinner date

I love Saturdays :) And I also love how you refer to the gym as an indoor playground! It makes it so much more fun. I mean who doesn’t want to go play for an hour or two!

Have fun on your dinner date 😉

2 Jessica @ The Process of Healing January 9, 2010 at 9:32 am

3 Jessica @ How Sweet January 9, 2010 at 9:33 am

When I started working full time, I came to appreciate the weekend so much more. Have a great Saturday darling! :)

4 MG @ Paris Food Blague January 9, 2010 at 9:33 am

your breakfast looks so rich and filling. jealous!

5 Mom January 9, 2010 at 9:40 am

Love Mary Poppins! Waves crashing in a bad way? Let’s hope not!

6 Erin January 9, 2010 at 9:43 am

I love Saturdays when there’s nothing on the agenda but some chores and other fun stuff. It’s nice to be “lazy” once in awhile. :)

7 Jenn (www.j3nn.net) January 9, 2010 at 9:50 am

That’s a gorgeous bowl of well-earned oats! :) Enjoy your day off — I LOVE being able to stay home and clean, too! It feels so good to have a clean house and fresh linens, especially after a crazy week/month!

8 christie @ honoring health January 9, 2010 at 9:54 am

happy Saturday!

9 Diana January 9, 2010 at 9:56 am

Guess I’m a drag, too, because I really love my cleaning/organizing days, too. I could spend hours doing it!

Have a great weekend!

:) Diana

11 Morgan @ Life After Bagels January 9, 2010 at 9:59 am

My day involves much of the same . . well that and 5 hours of homework . . .

but I do have my date at the end of the night too . . . hooray!

12 Estela @ Weekly Bite January 9, 2010 at 10:01 am

I heart Saturdays :) It’ s so refreshing to be able to do whatever you please :)

Have a great Saturday :)

13 Lori (Finding Radiance) January 9, 2010 at 10:03 am

Hey – a clean house and getting things checked off the list is rewarding to me, too! Feels good.

Those oats look yummy. I usually have a 1/2 cup of pumpkin in mine normally – I lurve pumpkin oats.

I think the picture in your coffee looks like a bike seat.

14 Freya @ foodfitnessandfreya.wordpress.com January 9, 2010 at 10:07 am

ahh I love days like that, where all the chores and stuff that has piled up during the week can get done, it’s so satisfying!
Epic bowl of oats :)

15 Danielle (Coffee Run) January 9, 2010 at 10:15 am

I like how you refer to the gym as the “indoor playground” :)
Do you put the pumpkin in your oats while they’re cooking or stir it in at the end?

16 *Andrea* January 9, 2010 at 10:29 am

have you made a video on french press foamy coffee yet 😉 *hint hint* 😉

enjoy your leisurely saturday!!! you work hard and deserve to play too of course!

18 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) January 9, 2010 at 10:31 am

We have a Keurig and put the milk in first so the coffee steams it as it brews…so good. Makes it taste sweeter. That bowl of oats is way over the line…but it is Saturday and there is no better way to start Saturday! Enjoy your day!

19 Rachel January 9, 2010 at 10:32 am

I feel the same way! Love to clean.. it relaxes me :) If I’m stressed out, you might just find me re-organizing my fridge, hahaha.

20 Courtney January 9, 2010 at 10:43 am

Loverboy sang “Everybody’s Working for the Weekend” for a reason!!! :>
adventures in tri-ing

21 Laura January 9, 2010 at 10:48 am

Oh Kath, I do sympathise with your shocker of a working week- two years ago I was doing a two hour commute across London, a year ago I began working in a hospital doing crazy hours- 14 hour days/ 5.30am starts/night shifts which I just about got the hang of- and now I’ve gone to graduate Medical school, which over here in the U.K. means 2 years packed into 1- now my brain is overloaded, and my body underworked. I really understand what you mean about all the changes, I wish I could adjust more quickly!… just remembered a naughty but nice addition to oatmeal, I’m not sure if you’ve done it before, in England you can buy little ‘Easter’ eggs- like caramel, praline filled ones (like Cadburys Creme eggs?), how about pushing them deep down into an oatmeal bowl, so that the warmth melts them down, and you discover them halfway down- I bet you could do it with Reece’s cups, Lindor truffles or M&Ms? Enjoy your commute free weekend and sorry about the long comment! 😉

22 Kath January 9, 2010 at 2:34 pm

Oh wow, I love the idea of a Cadbury egg in the middle!!!

23 Jessie January 9, 2010 at 10:52 am

How are you doing with exercise & your strained hamstring? I have one as well and have taken 5 days off of exercise and It’s killing me…I noticed you had gone on the stairmaster though. Do you think that me going on my ET would bother my hamstring at all?

24 Kath January 9, 2010 at 2:35 pm

It’s doing fine when I exercise – but it’s not doing well when I lift things. I gotta stop doing housework! I’m not sure if it’s a muscle or what because I can’t really massage it. Maybe some kind of connector?

25 Jessie January 9, 2010 at 9:58 pm

I know what you mean because I cant massage it either, mine hurts when I stretch though. Hopefully these heal soon! Im going nuts resting for so long.

26 Danielle January 9, 2010 at 11:19 am

Thanks for the “bubble picture” tip. I always wondered how you were able to get pictures in your coffee like that :)

Have a great day!

27 Melissa January 9, 2010 at 11:23 am

I love the “indoor playground!” I’m going to use that philosophy this afternoon to make sure I spend some quality time at the gym with my new People magazine! :]

Have a great Saturday!

28 Ameena January 9, 2010 at 11:41 am

I am with you on the cleaning thing..I love to do clean on a Saturday morning. :)

29 Jenna January 9, 2010 at 11:47 am

I am in love with your oats!!

30 Stef January 9, 2010 at 11:51 am

i can always count on your posts for coffee mug shape shifters :) your oats look wonderfuL! have a great saturday

31 Mandy @ University Cooking January 9, 2010 at 11:58 am

Indoor play ground…that does sound a lot better than gym :)

32 Deva (Voracious Vorilee) January 9, 2010 at 12:10 pm

I love weekends for that very reason, too! I love to clean, to be able to get in 1+ hours at the gym each day (I split it up for weights so I get two days of strength but one day is upper body and the other is lower), and I get extra time with The Boy and the cats!

33 Kati @ Living Well January 9, 2010 at 12:16 pm

Love the Mary Poppins pic! Such a cute movie; I think we owned it when I was little. Have fun cleaning! Sometimes those do make the best Saturdays :-)

34 Jil January 9, 2010 at 12:18 pm

The oats look delish — and seriously there is something so therapeutic about cleaning sometimes…SOMETIMES. haha However, even if cleaning can be a pain in the butt, nothing is more satisfying than looking around a clean looking and clean smelling house/apartment/room. and I agree with Mandy — indoor play ground sounds so much better with gym. Copyright that shiz! haha

35 Cynthia (It All Changes) January 9, 2010 at 12:27 pm

I’m always so busy so the time I get to just be at home and organize and clean is awesome.

36 Karla January 9, 2010 at 12:32 pm

Saturdays are great! I love getting things done around the house!

37 [email protected] January 9, 2010 at 1:02 pm

I feel the same way about cleaning….I totally love it. Good thing too considering my man is the total opposite hahaaa. :-)

38 Heather (The Single Dish) January 9, 2010 at 1:31 pm

I love my place too, I feel so accomplished afterwards. Have a nice Day!

39 Heather @ Side of Sneakers January 9, 2010 at 1:33 pm

Wanna come do my laundry?!

40 Paige@ RunningAroundNormal January 9, 2010 at 1:43 pm

Sounds like the perfect little Saturday 😀 I still need to clean my house. Have a baby shower to go to, but hopefully afterword!

41 Anna January 9, 2010 at 1:52 pm

There’s such a sense of accomplishment in getting your house all cleaned for the weekend. You get all your chores done and then you get to enjoy a nice clean and tidy house for the rest of the weekend. I don’t necessarily enjoy the act of cleaning, but I always enjoy the results – and that’s what usually motivates me.

42 Alison January 9, 2010 at 1:54 pm

you’re so cute! enjoy whistling and cleaning. i want a house that i can play in! haha. your oat bowl looks delish.

43 Angela (The Lady Loves to Eat) January 9, 2010 at 1:56 pm

sounds like you are having your perfect Saturday!

44 Wendy January 9, 2010 at 1:59 pm

Know what you mean about the body clock. I got up ~4:30 a.m. 3 mornings in a row this week, then the 4th day, when I could sleep in, I woke up at 5 a.m.!

Looks like you have a fun day planned! Enjoy!!

45 Katharine January 9, 2010 at 2:00 pm

That looks like one of the most delicious and filling bowls of oatmeal EVER. Mmm. (And you are welcome to come clean my apartment any time you want!)

46 Cait (Cait's Plate) January 9, 2010 at 2:08 pm

That bowl looks divine. As always.

And of course I’ve already eaten but I want that now. Haha.

Happy Sat-ur-day! 😉

47 Mae @ OhhMay January 9, 2010 at 2:39 pm

Ahh I wish I had your motivation to think of the gym and cleaning as fun!! I love to workout but something about the gym… and other people…. hahaha

48 Lauren @ eater not a runner January 9, 2010 at 2:46 pm

That looks like maybe the best bowl of oats ever!

49 Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] January 9, 2010 at 3:45 pm

It’s probably strange for a 20-year-old, but I love Saturday mornings at home cleaning and feeling productive. I’m 20 going on 30 =) Have fun shopping!

50 lynn (The Actors Diet) January 9, 2010 at 4:24 pm

i’m watching a show about whistling right now – so weird that you mentioned whistling like mary poppins!

51 Christy January 10, 2010 at 1:44 pm

Yay for playing house (cleaning!), I love it too! Nothing is better than an organizing!!

52 The Healthy Apple January 11, 2010 at 2:12 pm

Aww; I love waking up to dreams like that…Your breakfast looks unbelievable, Kath..that is surely one of the best bowls of breakfast oats I’ve seen on your blog…so delishy!
