I was quite surprised when Matt seemed as excited as I did about a shopping trip. We actually really considered going down to Short Pump outside of Richmond to hit up some big stores. But 2 hours in the car and increasing hunger after our run had us thinking local.
We decided to make it a date and go out to lunch.
A MILLION options were suggestion: Brixx pizza, The Nook, Bluegrass Bakery brunch, Arch’s, Aromas, Beer Run, Panera, Rev Soup, sushi. Nothing was really calling us in the $$ or the taste departments, so we found ourselves at Bodo’s, where two people can get lunch for under $10.
Whole wheat bagel with cream cheese for me ($2.05! This seems so cheap to me – although I do remember when we used to go to Lu-e-G’s after church every Sunday and get $1 bagels with cream cheese. So fun!) Matt’s was a bacon and egg that we both agreed needed some kind of cheese too [his ordering mistake.]
We also shared the Cleo salad ($3.75!) that was topped with almonds and veg and deliciously refreshing.
Oh – and to put us juuuuust over $10, we shared a raspberry seltzer, which I believe was a fountain drink they assemble there. It wasn’t sweet at all – just like the flavored seltzers you get at the grocer store. What an awesome option!
$10.67. Not bad!
We found ourselves at Pier 1 where we were glad we saved on lunch because we spent on some furniture for our porch! I’ve been looking at these outdoor sectionals that are not only too big but thousands of dollars more than we wanted to spend [with boring cushions.] We ended up choosing a set from Pier 1 from the Santa Barbara line that comes with a loveseat and two really comfy rocking chairs to make a conversation area.
But my favorite part were the colorful outdoor pillows we bought (on sale!) to go on them! Warm weather, come our way soon!
We’ve had good luck with Pier 1 furniture – the table and chairs that we bought for our first apartment’s kitchen, that became our first house’s kitchen table, then Matt’s desk and now our porch set have lasted almost 7 years in great condition.
We also went to Kohl’s where I bought some new underwear ($1 a piece – can’t beat that!) and finally to Bed, Bath and Beyond where I put some coupons to the test and bought some new curtains for our master bedroom. They’re very similar to the white ones we had, but the white ones just looked yellowed to me next to the white IKEA closet and freshly painted trim. I really like the richness these bring to the room! [And I do wish they were 4” longer to swipe the floor, but our windows are an odd height and we’re not going to re-drill the rods, so I have to just live with it.]
And finallllllly we moved this little desk downstairs to act as a office supplies station. I really like it positioned here – it gives the stark white basement some charm.
Off to do some food prep!!

Sounds like a very productive day!! And those bagels look so good!
Your bagel looks amazing. I am on a strict detox and would love to sink my teeth in to that chewy bread. Sounds like a fun day too – excellent
Love the new cushions for the patio!! I’m sad to say we have no had as much luck with Pier 1 furniture as you. We love our kitchen table from there, but the finish is all coming off on the top and it is scratched EVERYWHERE!!
Underwear for $1 a pop? Aside from the delicious bagels, I crave that deal.
Bagels look so good. I love your taste in decorating!
I love great buys! It always makes me feel good to get great deals!

Your bedroom is beautiful! Love the colors!
Wow, that table and chairs has held up really well for seven years!! Looks like you made lots of great shopping choices today
I really do love that dining set you guys have on the porch. The perfect shade!
Looks like a successful Sunday! Love those rocking chairs – imagine reading your book while rocking away in one of them on a sunny morning, bliss!!
Hanging curtains and curtain shopping is SUCH a pain. Hard to get the rods level because sometimes the windows/window area isn’t level. You dont notice that 1/8th of an inch til you’re up on a ladder, working over your head, your arms are falling asleep, and you’re trying to drill in screws into studs. Oh joy of joys. I have hung a few curtains in my day. And went back to BB&B about 17 times trying to get the right length panels, rods, etc…but it’s all worth it when they’re up and the house is lookin spiffy!
Oh the Santa Barbara line!
I have no idea what those look like but I live in Santa Barbara so I can support it!
I had oatmeal for lunch today with my 2.5 year old little guy. It was whipped with banana (KERF style). I found your blog in 2009 when I was pregnant with him and started eating oats whipped with banana every day while I was pregnant and then after he was born (to boost my milk supply)! He loves them now as a picky toddler. It was a special lunch and I’m so grateful to have learned about oats like this from you.
Glad you’re still lovin’ the oats!!
I love the green! Makes me want to do green in my house somewhere
Nothing is better than a fresh bagel, and I am all about the Seltzer waltzer these days! Love!
You’re making me miss Bodo’s even more than I already do!!! Love their chicken salad and sweet iced tea.
I’m so excited for your porch furniture! I live in an apartment without any balconies or outdoor space, so I’m living vicariously through you
Your bedroom looks beautiful, too – I love the color of the curtains, and I think they look really nice as they are, without sweeping the floor.
That home of yours is looking fabulous!! I’m glad you had a successful trip!
I absolutely love your colors! They’re so airy and warm. And gosh, I miss bagels so much.. those ones look fantastic!
So I bought bagels yesterday but no cream cheese… what was I thinking?!
Love your choice of colours Kath, so refreshing
And your lunch looks delicious, $10.67 is pretty impressive for two people!
you’re so good at decorating! Love all the ways you’ve repurposed old items!
Love those pillows! I’ve been meaning to hit up Pier 1 lately for some springy looking stuff, since winter decided not to come this year
I need to hit up Kohls for those $1 underwear! That’s a steal and I hold on to underwear way too long. I was actually just thinking about that while doing laundry today.
I love the new furniture and cushions! So cute!
Add some trim material to the curtains to bring them to floor length. They do this all the time on HGTV. A darker color perhaps??? Or a different texture???
I totally should do that I am just not very crafty! Do you think I could use the iron on hem kind? I’m terrible at a sewing machine and would be scared I’d ruin them. Also have no clue what kind of fabric to use – perhaps a chocolate brown?
I was JUST writing this comment: “Have you ever thought of sewing some extra fabric to the bottom of the currtains to add the 4″? You could even use a rich chocolate brown to tie into the furniture color. It would ado the trick!”…..when I read this one! Its very easy to do.
The do this all the time on HGTV.
What about adding rings to hang the curtains from? I couldn’t tell from the pics if the curtains have grommets or are plain at the top. Here’s an example:
http://www.younghouselove.com/2012/01/eight-more-living-room-curtain/
That’s what I did….went to the fabric store and bought 8″ decorative fringy trim and the iron on hem tape…looks and worked beautifully!!!
Do the curtains have a hem that you could drop (or have dropped)? Usually there’s a few inches of hem so it might give you some extra length!
I think they do, but I don’t think it’s quite long enough. I think I’d need to add the extra fabric
I would certainly try dropping the hem as far as possible and adding the iron-on fuser if you can do it. If it is a small border…you might even get by with a knock-out pattern.
Bagels should come with a disclaimer: “Must be served with cream cheese”
Wow! Great lunch deal! I was also going to mention adding a border to your curtains to lengthen them…try double sided tape. Chocolate brown, or the same fabric as your duvet colour or a similar colour would look nice too! Something to give weight to the curtains.
Love all your new home purchases and love Pier 1! I was going to mention the same thing as the person above…is there a hem at the bottom of the curtains? You could probably easily take the stitching out and that would give the curtains a few more inches of length!
I Love Wicker furniture! So old fashioned!
I looooove Brixx pizza! It’s one of my go-tos in Charlotte
I can’t wait to make a trip to Cville to try Arch’s!
That is the happiest and most cheerful looking basement I have ever seen! If I ever have a house with a basement (uncommon here in Los Angeles), I will totally whiten the walls and accent it with some bright colors. Thanks for the ideas.
You could always add curtain ring clips to the top of curtains to add some length!

Fun day! Love Pier One stuff
Congrats on the baby news! As a mom, I am looking at those cute curtains and stairs and I am visualizing your beautiful Ball glass jars on the side of your counter. You have a little work ahead of you childproofing, but it will be so fun. You also have a great backyard for the little one.
I know…the stairs especially..!
Me + pier 1 = serious danger
