Procrastination Adventure

March 10, 2009

After two hours of studying, I’d had enough of the indoors and set out on an adventure. My plan was to bike to the closest greenway entrance and do a little running, but before I knew it I was headed to the further greenway entrance (the one on the way to Kate + Nate’s and Great Harvest) and then found myself on their doorstep!! We discussed being more spontaneous at dinner on Saturday, so I said “Sa-prise!” when Nate opened the door. Gilbert was happy to see me and licked all over my legs! Kate wasn’t there (she was out shopping) so I continued my journey by run to Great Harvest to visit Matt.  He was quite surprised to see me as well! During my 5 minute visit, I let me sample a tsp of Naturally Nutty Vanilla Almond Butter they received as a sample for the store on a tiny piece of Cinnamon Chip bread.

Must. Purchase. This.

It was amazing!! Almost like vanilla frosting!!!

Almond Vanilla4anutri2

I said goodbye to Matt and ran the 1 mile back to Kate + Nate’s. Kate was home, I said hello and chatted for a few and was back on my way home.

I’d say total I covered about 12 miles on bike and 2.5 on foot. It was glorious!

But I was pretty hungry when I arrived home. I planned this salad on my way back:

  • ~3-4 cups romaine, drizzled in balsamic and Orange Blossom Honey (honey makes the best salad dressing ever!)
  • Plus a bowl of the following, heated in the microwave until they were hot:
    • 1/2 large cooked sweet potato
    • 1/2 cup pinto beans
    • 3 broccoli trees
    • 2 finger-long peppers
    • 1 handful pre-prepped kale
  • Plus
    • 1 tbsp raisins + peanuts

And the last bit of the Food Should Taste Good Sweet Potato Chip crumbs –

Get combo of flavors!

I’ve got two midterms tomorrow and tons of studying left to do.

If it’s not too buggy, I might go read in the hammock! It’s cooler out today (only 65*) but still very nice.

Uh oh, looks like someone already beat me to the hammock!!

Oh I’m jealous of your hammock!!

3 Andrea [bella eats] March 10, 2009 at 2:25 pm

Your salad looks lovely!

I’ve recently been running/walking to more errands/events lately because I’ve been so inspired by you. I live only 1.5 miles from my office and about 2 miles from my yoga studio, so I’ve been trying to get in the habit of running home from work and the studio, most of the time adding some zigzags to get my distance higher. Thanks for the glorious evenings! :)

Good luck studying and on your tests tomorrow!

4 Diana March 10, 2009 at 2:39 pm

oh my goodness…the vanilla almond butter sounds to-die-for! will GH be selling it?

the salad looks so beautiful and colorful! :)

5 Hallie March 10, 2009 at 2:39 pm

That almond butter sounds so good! (at first I typed “almost butter”) I’ll have to keep my eye out…or maybe even make a trip to Whole Foods (which I usually avoid for my poor wallet’s sake!) to scope it out.

6 brandi March 10, 2009 at 2:40 pm

I love riding bike to run errands, I just wish it was more condusive to that here in Vegas. Your pictures look so amazing with the sun today! What kind of camera do you use? I am looking to invest in a better one that isn’t too pricey? Thanks!

17 Diana March 10, 2009 at 3:06 pm

What a fun way to exercise!

I want some of that almond butter- yum :)

19 Kathryn March 10, 2009 at 3:19 pm

This may be a silly question, but what’s a greenway entrance? Never lived in NC, and we don’t have them here in the Northeast!?? Wish I could bike and run around as much as you do to do errands, but our suburbia roads don’t allow for us to safely do so!

20 Shelby March 10, 2009 at 3:19 pm

That Vanilla Almond Butter is my favorite nut butter of all time! It’s phenomenal!

21 laci March 10, 2009 at 3:29 pm

Lovly oats and salad, btw! 😀

24 Foodie (Fab and Delicious Food) March 10, 2009 at 3:38 pm

Great salad!

Good luck studying!

25 Heather March 10, 2009 at 3:40 pm

Wow, that salad look so yummy! I never seem to get my salads to look so appetizing! Thanks for telling us all the ingredients… I love hearing different salad variations!

And WOW, what a workout! I’m just curious, do you ever worry about burning more calories than you take in? I think about that every once in a while when I have a very exercise-filled day. Does it usually just even out over the week? Or is something to keep an eye on?

26 Nicole March 10, 2009 at 3:41 pm

That pb sounds amazing!!!!!

27 Emily March 10, 2009 at 3:42 pm

Love your spontaneous afternoon (and also your salad)!

Good luck with your midterms; it almost seems to nice out to be studying, but we have to do what we have to do, I guess. :-)

Have a great evening, Kath!

28 Mel March 10, 2009 at 3:44 pm

Enjoy the weather, it sounds fabulous!

29 Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) March 10, 2009 at 3:46 pm

Delicious salad! And sounds like you had quite the bike ride!

30 Jordan March 10, 2009 at 3:54 pm

I’m also trying to remember what kind of camera you use. I looked back through some posts but couldn’t find it. I can’t wait until it gets nice in NYC so I can exercise outside!

31 HangryPants March 10, 2009 at 3:56 pm

That Naturally Nutty sounds delicious. Great Harvest should definitely sell it … and open a store in northern New Jersey. It’s sad that the one in Rhode Island opened and then I moved away. :(

Your spring weather is enviable.

32 Jordan March 10, 2009 at 3:58 pm

I take that back…i just found it!

Ugh I have a midterm tomorrow, too! Studying does not sound good at this point :(

35 Lisa D March 10, 2009 at 4:33 pm

What a great looking salad! The more ingredients in a salad I say the better. If there really is an almond butter out there that tastes like vanilla frosting I gotta try it! Good luck with your tests, I’m sure you will do fantastic!-Lisa D.

36 Adi ( March 10, 2009 at 4:49 pm

I think you have the happiest salads around. Does that make sense? :) They always look so cheery!

37 Biz March 10, 2009 at 4:50 pm

Love adding nuts to my salads too!

Great bike AND run!

38 KLM March 10, 2009 at 5:00 pm

holy cow. vanilla almond butter. that looks divine!!!

39 amy (veganissexy) March 10, 2009 at 5:05 pm

I’d like you to know your husband has created a little baking monster at my house! My husband is now obsessed with baking bread. He made foccacia for the first time (before Matt even posted it……funny :) ! )
I posted about it….

Anyhoo…..Loving the cooperation in the kitchen!

40 Becca A March 10, 2009 at 5:21 pm

I’m obsessed with that flavor of Naturally Nutty, so good.

41 Jaclyn March 10, 2009 at 5:32 pm

That looks delicious–love the idea of sweet potato in there! Also; where can I find that ab??

42 eatingRD March 10, 2009 at 6:06 pm

Thanks Jordan! That looks like a good camera, and not too pricey like some of the good ones I’ve seen . . . $800!?! Thanks again :)

43 Liz (The Good Eatah) March 10, 2009 at 6:53 pm

I love how spontaneous you are! It reminds me of when I was a kid and just showing up at friends houses was a normal thing.

That almond butter sounds AMAZING. You’ve inspired me to make my own in my vitamix — I recently made a savory almond butter with garlic and red pepper seasonings, but vanilla sounds like the way to go.

44 Kath March 10, 2009 at 7:07 pm

Andrea [bella eats],
Way to use those legs!

Diana ,
I don’t think so – that would be nice though!

eatingRD ,
Check the FAQ page. Blog Question #6.

Kathryn ,
I run my errands on suburbia sidewalks, but we are lucky to have a Greenway that spans about 6 miles down in South Charlotte. It’s basically just a walking/biking/running trail through the woods behind a bunch of neighborhoods. It takes me 20 minutes just to get to it, but it makes biking to places that are far away more pleasant, even if it’s longer. There are 4 different entrances – some better than others!

I mildly keep my eye on it, but I don’t really burn that many calories. I’d be more concerned if I was running 7-10+ miles on a regular basis. I wore my heart rate monitor today and burned about 500 calories in my 2 hours of activity. Not as much as you’d think, but biking doesn’t get my HR up that much.

amy (veganissexy),
How fun! Focaccia looks great!

Jaclyn ,
Naturally Nutty is only available online – or perhaps a few specialty stores, but I’ve never seen it.

Liz (The Good Eatah),
Let us know if it’s awesome!

45 jennifer March 10, 2009 at 7:31 pm

That nut butter is 10 dollars!! Sheesh!

46 Kath March 10, 2009 at 7:40 pm

I was just telling Kate this morning: think how fast you’d order a $10 glass of wine in a restaurant. Then think of all the spoonfuls of PB you could savor for the same amount. It’s still very expensive, but it seems more worth it when you think about all the other ways we spend $10.

47 Organic Girl aka Ashley H March 10, 2009 at 7:44 pm

wow what a great day!! and lunch! I rode my bike to my university today. I usually bike to the bus stop and then bus to school but I get out of class earlier today (not in the dark) and decided why not commute and exercise at the same time!! Love it. Have a wonderful rest of your day!!
