Pecan Party

February 21, 2009

Morning! I’m excited to have a weekend with no major plans except for dinner tonight at Karen’s. I’ve got two whole days to get things done and it’s still technically morning on the first day!

It’s a cold morning here. I wonder if we have a draft because my paperwhites are shriveled and moved as far as they could in their pot away from the patio doors! It has been so interesting to see how the plants move during the day. They’re allllliiiiive!

I did 30 minutes of Power Vinyasa Flow #1 this morning. I would recommend this session to anyone who is just beyond the beginner stages of yoga. It had a little of everything (stretch, strength, balance) and was a great length.

Then came the Pecan Party!

IMG_2033 (1024x768)

I picked up some Georgia Pecan coffee at Fresh Market yesterday. It smells A.mazing!! So I continued the theme into my oatmeal with some toasted pecan pieces –

IMG_2035 (1024x768) IMG_2027 (1024x768)

The Mix:

  • 1/3 cup oats, vanilla soy milk, water, 1/2 huuuuuge banana (see to the right – look how small my hand is in comparison), pinch salt, splash vanilla
  • Generous half cup Libby’s pumpkin, heated in bowl
  • Generous sprinkle cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp wheatberries
  • Sprinkle pecan pieces, toasted in the microwave
  • A few butterscotch chips
  • Swirled tbsp pruney pumpkin butter
  • Spoonful Barney Butter (which looks huge on my tiny antique spoon)

Annnnnddddd a mug of WATER. So at the recommendation of the coffee guy at Fresh Market I had my beans coarsely ground. I don’t think they even brewed!? I used the same amount and time as usual. This coffee was so weak I didn’t even finish it. I think I’m going to have to re-grind it down myself.

We’ve got plans for a mid-morning gym trip by bike and lots of research.

Happy Saturday!

Oh my gosh look at that plant! It’s running away! hahah. I guess we have tougher plants here up north because none of ours do that and they are right by the window. LOL.

Have a fun gym trip and goodluck with the school work.

oatmeal looks great and that coffee sounds awesome!

we have a fresh market, but it’s an hour away, so I don’t go very often.

For French press, it’s the best with freshly ground beans so we always just buy whole beans and Nick just grinds what we need that morning. Then, if there’s a little extra, we put it in a ziploc bag in the freezer.

Haha your paperwhites! That’s kinda freaky! Your oatmeal today=ridiculously good-looking (zoolander, anyone?). Enjoy your weekend- sounds like it will be relaxing and productive!

I sampled that coffee at FM last week and it didn’t taste any different than normal coffee, which I was bummed about b/c it sounded so tasty and I was considering getting some. I think they must have put the wrong sign up. Anywho, I ended up getting the FM Almond Amaretto…mmm. :)

That’s kind of weird with the paperwhites. My mom grows them every year around this time and they lean just like yours, but always toward to window (to reach for the sun). Do you have a light source on the other side of the room? Life is amazing!

That breakfast looks SO filling! Even more so if you had finished the coffee. How long would you say you usually wait after a meal like that to work out? And how long can you usually last until lunch? I always get hungry about 2 or 2.5 hours after my breakfast and I’m thinking it’s just not large enough (300-350 cal). (or maybe I’m just at work and bored…)

Hey Kath,
I used to work as a barista and if you’re french pressing, you really should use a coarse grind. Just make sure you give the grounds a good stir with the water, let it brew for (I want to say 4 min but can’t remember! It was so long ago) and then press. Try giving it another shot. I am never dissappointed! :)

Thank you as always, Kath, for providing fresh, fun and delicious content. I just found out that I’m expecting my first baby and I’m thrilled. I’ve learned so much about better food choices from your blog and feel armed with information on healthy options.

Can you, or anyone, recommend any good prenatal yoga and/or Pilates DVDs? Thank you in advance :)

Oh my goodness! The flowers! We had ivy once growing in our attic (no clue how it got there) and it grew threw the door frame to get inside the house for heat + light! Creepy!

Stupid coffee guy!
My boyfriend got me a fancy coffee (JP Java Dark Roast) for Valentine’s Day and it’s amazing. I look forward to drinking it every morning. You might not like it if you don’t like strong, dark coffee though.

Karissa ,
They normally do lean towards the windows but I really think they were cold!

Hallie ,
Most of my oatmeal bowls are 400-500 calories and they last me 4-5 hours. On days when I eat first, workout second, I’ll eat in the 8:00 hour and workout around 11:30 or so and then have lunch at 1:30ish. On days when I workout first, I eat around 7:30 and start getting hungry around 11:30 and eat at 12:30. HTH

tiffany ,
I think this is too coarsely ground. Here’s the technique I follow exactly:

Laurel ,
Thanks!

I think many of the Hatha yogas would be good for prenatal because they are relaxing/stretching but I haven’t seen a specific prenatal one. Congrats!!!

I am quite the coffee expert (as I’ve been drinking it since 9th grade) and coarsely ground means weaker and less taste coffee. I like to think of it in terms of surface area…like with garlic, the more surface area is exposed, the more prevalent the taste will be. I always get my coffee ground on espresso, which is the finest ground.
