Cardboard Surfing

May 4, 2011

Because you have to find fun in the little things…

[Matt really did push me on that cart across our parking lot – we really did need a weight for the cardboard so it didn’t fly off!!]

Every time I go to the bakery to work I feel like I accomplish so much. I love doing manual labor. It’s so rewarding!

When I got to the bakery, I found Karen and her friend Tracy and we went on a walk to admire North Downtown houses before I got started working with Matt. It was chilly out, but so nice! [Karen says hello and she’s been feeling good this week and helped out all day unpacking!]

Once back, I tackled unpacking tons of boxes of smallwares. I found measuring cups and spatulas and knives and all kinds of little things our equipment broker had sent!

Plus tubs galore, which I organized

And where there were 100 boxes now there are just cleaning supplies!

Matt assembled chairs

And spent all day on these shelves

And did refrigerator stuff..

Love our floors!!!

Also in LOVE with our recycled glass counters!!

This happens tomorrow:

My lunch was SO filling and we worked until about 6 when Matt proclaimed he was starving. So I biked home while we drove and we rendezvoused at home.

Tonight we were supposed to have salmon cakes, but we gave ourselves the night off and went out for pizza instead. My mom told me when I was in my internship: “There are times when eating out makes sense.” I’d say this week is busy enough to count. So we went out guilt free!

Dusted off, lipsticked and blazered and you’d never know how dirty I really was!

We got the amazing hummus plate to share for a ‘salad’ course

I had two amazing fluffy grilled pitas and forkfulls of veggies and olives

And to share – the special pesto pizza with portabellas, artichokes, tomatoes, goat cheese, pesto and mozzarella

Had two of those bad boys – YUM!!!

Didn’t I promise myself some R&R tonight? Gossip Girl awaits!!!

Do you and Matt have a lot of other help getting the bakery up and running? Or is it just basically you two and some professionals here and there?

Either way, you two are amazing!

2 KathEats May 4, 2011 at 8:22 pm

Well our contractor has done all the hard work – but no, we don’t have help cleaning and putting it together – except for Karen!

3 Katie May 4, 2011 at 8:21 pm

It’s true – you DO have to find fun in the little things. Otherwise life can get too overwhelming! As always, the bakery is coming along beautifully! And I love the chairs you picked out!

And it’s always good news to hear when Karen is doing well! :)

4 Stacy @ Every Little Thing May 4, 2011 at 8:21 pm

Wow the bakery is looking great! Good for you guys, and you definitely deserve to eat out!

5 Jil @ Big City, Lil Kitchen May 4, 2011 at 8:22 pm

That pizza looks incredible – and the bakery is looking gorgeous!!

6 elle May 4, 2011 at 8:23 pm

The bakery is looking amazing! So mod and chic looking. Love the orange wall!!

7 chelsey @ clean eating chelsey May 4, 2011 at 8:23 pm

Going out to eat is DEFINITELY worth it when cooking just adds stress to your life. I love cooking but I never want it to be a chore or something I don’t look forward to. Life is stressful enough – do what you enjoy!

8 Estela @ Weekly Bite May 4, 2011 at 8:25 pm

What a productive day!! Love the bakery :)

Enjoy your relaxing evening!

9 Mom May 4, 2011 at 8:25 pm

Love all the equipment.

Love that Karen is feeling good.

Love the cardboard and the blazor shot and Matt on top of the fridges.

LOVE being quoted on Katheats!

11 Mom May 4, 2011 at 8:27 pm

Sorry I’m such a bad speller. That should be “blazer.”

12 erica May 4, 2011 at 8:28 pm

yes! sometimes eating out just makes sense!!!
and that pizza looks delicious (and well deserved!)

hope you’re enjoying gossip girl!

13 staceyhealthylife May 4, 2011 at 8:29 pm

The stores looking great. It’ll be nice when it’s all ready to go.

14 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) May 4, 2011 at 8:35 pm

Dang that looks like a productive day! I’m glad you guys went out! You totally deserved a night out of the kitchen. Enjoy your R&R!

15 Holly @ The Runny Egg May 4, 2011 at 8:37 pm

Love the pic of you on the cardboard — makes me think of when I worked for Pier 1 — truck day was the best! We’d make cardboard sleds, forts, etc. It was hilarious.

That pizza looks incredible!

16 Kat @ Cupcake Kat May 4, 2011 at 8:39 pm

Such a great dinner! It definately looks like it was a good choice
Your bakery is going to look amazing! I can’t wait

17 Cait @ Beyond Bananas May 4, 2011 at 8:40 pm

I am in love with the glass recycled counter tops as well!

Manual labor.. quite possibly a favorite of mine. When the job is done.. it is so awesome to look at it and say.. “I owned that”

Even if it something small and (not so) simple.

Like furniture from IKEA! :)

18 Allie May 4, 2011 at 8:51 pm

Ah, manual labor IS very rewarding because you can see the results from all of your hard work, love it :)
The pesto pizza looks great!

19 Eileen May 4, 2011 at 8:51 pm

The bakery is looking great! The countertops are beautiful!

Your site looks quite a bit bigger than the two I’ve visited — does the size vary a lot from one location to another? One of ours is just a stand at an indoor farmer’s market, so maybe that doesn’t really count, but the other one doesn’t seem as roomy, either.

20 KathEats May 4, 2011 at 9:08 pm

It is bigger – we couldn’t downsize so we were “forced” to go with the bigger option. We’re paying more (bad) but we have space (good)

21 Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat May 4, 2011 at 8:51 pm

Your cardboard surfing looks like fun! It sounds like you guys had a super productive day, and that pizza was very well deserved. Enjoy Gossip Girl tonight! :)

22 Jess May 4, 2011 at 8:52 pm

My mom says the same thing to me—sometimes I need to be reminded! That pizza looks like a great way to finish off such a packed day!

23 hippierunner May 4, 2011 at 8:52 pm

OMG that is like the perfect pizza! Mmmm.

24 Susan May 4, 2011 at 8:55 pm

I love those recycled glass counter tops! I’m going to look into them when we re-do our kitchen.

25 heather May 4, 2011 at 8:58 pm

YUM where is that pizza/hummus plate from??

26 KathEats May 4, 2011 at 9:08 pm

Fry’s Spring Station

27 Hilary May 4, 2011 at 8:59 pm

WHOA. That supper looks SO good! And you totally earned it for all your hard work! Exciting news about the bakery progress!

28 Gina May 4, 2011 at 9:01 pm

Ah, lipstick and a blazer…works like a charm!

29 Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey May 4, 2011 at 9:02 pm

Hooray for bakery progress! It looks soooo roomy. I think having space for tables inside is a brilliant idea. I’ve never seen that in a GH before.

Glad to hear Karen is doing well, too.

30 Kate May 4, 2011 at 9:08 pm

Wow, you guys got a lot done around the bakery! It looks great :)

I love manual labour too – it is so rewarding.

31 Baking 'n' Books May 4, 2011 at 9:09 pm

Kath, you look so good in just a t-shirt and dressed up!!

Manual labor. Yep. I need that. Honestly, I’d rather be working back at being a Barista serving coffee, busing tables, cleaning dishes, stocking shelves – heck, mopping floors – anything just to keep life moving and not be stuck in my mind.

CVille does pizza well! Is it a local joint you go to?

32 Emily May 4, 2011 at 9:10 pm

What a day! Your blazer is SO cute- I need one of those!

33 Molly May 4, 2011 at 9:12 pm

Those times make the best memories!

34 Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food May 4, 2011 at 9:12 pm

Everything is looking fabulous! I LOVE that sparkly countertop! :)

Love the blazer also, so chic :)

35 Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) May 4, 2011 at 9:20 pm

“Dusted off, lipsticked and blazered and you’d never know how dirty I really was!”—and you cleaned up spectacularly and you look GREAT!

Love the recycled glass countertops..NICE! And the floors and all those gadgets. FUN stuff!

36 kaila @ healthy helper! May 4, 2011 at 9:25 pm

PESTO EGGPLANT PIZZA!?!?!?! YES PLEASE! That sounds amazing! I always make pesto pasta with roasted egg plant….so together on pizza sounds absolutely fabulous!

37 Dalai Lina May 4, 2011 at 9:31 pm

I am continually amazed that you have time to do all that you do!

38 Joanne May 4, 2011 at 9:31 pm

The bakery looks amazing! I live in Richmond and I think I may need to make a day trip out to Charlottesville when y’all open, and maybe hit up a winery or two also : )

39 Maria @ Oh Healthy Day May 4, 2011 at 9:46 pm

I’ll be in the Charlottesville area for my wedding this year and I make it a point to stop by the bakery! I’m hoping you’ll be up and running by September! Though by the looks of it, you’ll be done next week 😉

40 Ash @ Good Taste. Healthy Me May 4, 2011 at 9:47 pm

Yay it looks like things are really coming along! before you know it it will be your grand opening!

41 Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) May 4, 2011 at 9:49 pm

42 kim May 4, 2011 at 9:50 pm

that pizza does look amazing! my trip to cville for work last week was last minute but my fiance & I have been planning on visiting for months now- now were just waiting for the bakery to open so we can try it out while were there!

43 Caileigh May 4, 2011 at 9:53 pm

gosh why don’t I live near you? working at your Great Harvest would probably be the best job I could ask for!
Also, we shouldn’t discuss how often “Dusted off, lipsticked and blazered and you’d never know how dirty I really was!” is my motto..

44 Mindy May 4, 2011 at 9:55 pm

It’s all coming together and looking great – I can’t wait to see the finished product!

45 Miranda @ Working Mom Works Out May 4, 2011 at 10:00 pm

The restaurant looks SO GOOD!!! Congrats you guys!!

46 Abby May 4, 2011 at 10:02 pm

That pizza sounds like heaven! :) Everything in the bakery looks so good!

47 Angel7 May 4, 2011 at 10:17 pm

The bakery will soon start permeating the air with the smell of oh-so-good & yummy breads :)

Pizza, pizza, pizza… We love pizza in our household :) That pizza you got looks so good!

48 Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife May 4, 2011 at 10:52 pm

Your pizza looks AMAZING! Love the blazer look too :)

49 Emma (Namaste Everyday) May 4, 2011 at 10:57 pm

it’s so true, sometimes you just HAVE to go out! I also throw on a blazer to cover up the mess underneath 😉

50 Kalyn May 4, 2011 at 11:13 pm

Cute blazer! Cute cardboard picture! And yummy looking food!
I liked your mom’s quote; I often feel guilty about going out to eat- both about the money and the fact that I feel I eat healthier if I eat at home. It was a nice little reminder that there’s no reason to feel guilt if I eat out on occasion (:

51 Lenna May 4, 2011 at 11:16 pm

You look like a real bussines woman in that blazer, like it:)

52 lynn @ the actor's diet May 4, 2011 at 11:29 pm

it’s a good thing you like being physical labor!!!!

53 Khushboo May 4, 2011 at 11:34 pm

Can’t believe those countertops are recycled- they look fab! And you’re mom is very wise- sometimes eating out is just so necessary ?

54 Danielle @ weightsandmeasures May 5, 2011 at 12:14 am

That pizza does look delicious! Cardboard surfing on the other hand looks a little scary to me! I am not sure I could have done it.

55 Liv @ The Salty n' Sweet May 5, 2011 at 12:28 am

Ooh look at that hummus plate! It’s loaded! I’m definitely going there the next time I’m in Cville.

I love your counter-tops! So clean and fresh :)

56 Maggie May 5, 2011 at 1:26 am

I just wanted to let you know what an inspiration you are to me. I have been reading your blog for over 2 years now and am just finishing up my third year of school studying dietetics. I LOVE the fact that you are opening up a bakery with your hubby and look forward to seeing your success grow even more! I think you are such a beautiful person inside and out. Thanks for being my inspiration :)

57 KathEats May 5, 2011 at 7:12 am

The bakery looks so big and spacious!

60 Nichole Dunst (eat & be pretty) May 5, 2011 at 2:57 am

The bakery is really coming along! I love seeing all the progress on it, can’t wait to see it all finished!

61 Andra May 5, 2011 at 3:51 am

Reading your blog is like reading a story…at the end of some chapters you wake up being attached to some characters :) You seem to be an amazing person, I hope people around you realize that! And all the lovely recipes you put together…you should see how happy you make me in the morning when I open my reader and see new posts are waiting to be read :)
Good luck with the bakery! I’m sure it will be a great success :) after all, places are great just because of the people who run them! The only thing I truly regret is finding myself at the other end of the world and not being able to taste some of the amazing things you’ll be making there!

62 KathEats May 5, 2011 at 7:13 am

Thanks Andra :)

63 Paige @Running Around Normal May 5, 2011 at 5:12 am

Hey Kath! Your jeans are so perfectly faded in the front! Can I ask where they are from? So cute! :)

70 KathEats May 5, 2011 at 7:14 am

They’re Banana and my very FAVORITE jeans!! I’ve had them for 3-4 years, and the way they make them these days is just not the same!

71 Fancy May 5, 2011 at 8:48 am

Thanks, Kath! It’s so hard to find jeans with perfect fading like that. Yours are so cute!!! Have a great day! :)

79 Hope May 5, 2011 at 7:42 am

Wow! The bakery looks great! I love the counter tops! So pretty! :)

I’m getting annoyed with Gossip Girl. I just want things to work out. It seems like every time things start getting good, something bad happens!

80 Cait's Plate May 5, 2011 at 7:56 am

LOVE that blazer. Actually, love the whole outfit!

I can’t believe how well the place is coming together – I’m seriously in awe of what you and Matt are doing – such a HUGE deal and so exciting!!

I had pizza last night too but it wasn’t nearly as good as yours looks! Glad you enjoyed a night out after all your hard work during the day.

81 Jenn May 5, 2011 at 8:00 am

We love walking to Fry Spring Station for pizza :) Maybe we can meet up sometime? I’m going to body pump tomorrow. Despite carrying a 18+lb baby, my arms needed serious recovery after last Friday’s class. Yes, I was there. I entered 10 minutes late :( I’m still trying to adjust time for baby…it takes longer to get anywhere now ;P

82 Heather @ Side of Sneakers May 5, 2011 at 8:04 am

Those counters are amazing- I want them in my house!

83 Laura @Foodsnobstl May 5, 2011 at 8:36 am

Wow! Everything is really coming along.

84 Laura May 5, 2011 at 9:26 am

I’m so jealous….of that pizza!! I will have to try my hand at making something like this in my own kitchen (possibly w/out the artichokes though…not a huge fan).

The bakery looks awesome by the way!!! I’m so excited for you guys :) Makes me have a little more faith that one day I will own my own shop too.

85 Emily May 5, 2011 at 9:59 am

I love the cardboard surfing, and yes the bakery looks as if it’s all coming together! YAY!
