The Color Green

Sometimes I feel like my workouts rule my day. Not that they take up so much time, but it’s more a matter of showering + looking presentable. If I don’t exercise first thing, I postpone taking a shower until I do exercise. And that means I don’t want to leave my house! If I have an errand to run, sometimes I’ll put on jeans + some makeup and go out, but I wouldn’t want to go to a social event without a shower.

I’m fortunate to have a flexible schedule, but sometimes I think it’s kind of dumb that showering dictates my day.

IMG_9557Blog

I also feel that my bike rules my life a little bit (I’ll postpone a much-needed trip to the grocery store for days depending on weather or the fact that I don’t want to start my car engine!) This is good for planet earth, but bad for errand running!

So today I showered, got dressed and left with the attitude of “If I feel like working out later I will, otherwise I won’t!”

I drove over to Jefferson Vineyards to deliver my quarterly wine club newsletter work – the scallops recipe + blind tasting notes!

IMG_9555BlogIMG_9556Blog

And on the way home, I drove by the Monticello Trail. I decided to pull in on a whim and went for a 30 minute walk! No re-showering necessary, and a great burst of exercise. I’m so glad I decided to stop!

IMG_9558Blog

I then headed to Staples to pick up some things for the bakery, and then to the bakery to deliver them.

And then back home to finish a few things on my computer before digging in to lunch.

Literally!

Our garden is sprouting lots of adorable baby greens – kale, collards, chard, butterhead lettuce, herbs! We had such a good time harvesting greens last summer, and I’m SO excited to save money (and trips to the grocery store because we’re out of lettuce!) again this year!

Lunch:

Was turned into a salad!

IMG_9569Blog

I topped the salad with chickpeas, a hard-boiled egg, pecans, cranberries and GH bread cubes. Yum!

Apple on the side. Not a good apple.

IMG_9567Blog

And sparkling water spiked with some CHOCOLATE mint our landlords pointed out a few weeks ago! It really does smell chocolatey!

Just had 2 squares of dark chocolate. Life is complete.

Back to the bakery I do – and I’m packing yoga clothes – just in case I feel like it!

I am the same way about workout. In fact, I am having an inner debate right now about whether or not to go ahead and shower. Oftentimes I just end up showering 2x a day. Oh well.

Your salad is gorgeous! So cool you can just walk outside a pick your lunch. 🙂

I’m the same way about showers/workouts. I hate going anywhere without a shower, I just feel so gross! But postponing starting my day for 2-2.5 hours for exercise and grooming is no fun and sometimes not practical. I know if I’ve showered and done my hair, etc I am not going to workout so for the last six months I’ve started doing the 5:30 am thing to just get it done and have my whole day open. I am a stay at home mom so I can workout whenever I want to but I prefer to get it done and go about my day feeling fresh.

I use to have the same dilemma with workout/shower…then I decided to wean myself off daily hair washings, because that is what takes the longest in my routine…wash, dry, flat iron. It took about three weeks for my hair to adjust and not be greasy. During that time I just sprinkled baby powder on my hand and rubbed it into my roots, much cheaper than dry shampoo.
I do schedule my long runs , 5+ or more on hair washing day, but other than that I can workout whenever, and take a quick rinse more than once if needed.

I feel the same way sometimes about workouts. The workout itself isn’t too terribly long, but you need just about double that time to commute there and back, shower, and get ready for the rest of the day. Still, I’d rather workout then not just because of time.

    Hi Kath!

I’m a bit puzzled by part of your post.

On one hand, you put off groceries because of bad weather for biking (i.e., don’t want to drive), but on the other hand, you drive to the vineyard to drop off a document. Couldn’t you have emailed the vineyard your document and therefore not used your car for that purpose? …. unless there was another reason for the visit, which you did not explain! 🙂

    Thanks!

Of course I would have emailed if it were just a doc! I had to deliver a thumb drive with all of my high res images. The fact that I had to drive today due to weather and distance was why I wrote about my bike being the high priority. Not biking was on the brain.

I love when I can walk out to our garden and pick out fixings for a meal. We have a few weeks before our spinach and lettuce are even mini-sized, though.

Once the trees start budding, I stop eating apples. I always find them to by mealy and blah this time of year, but once autumn hits, I’ll be stocking up again.

I’m still buying some these days, and turning them into my super-easy, super-delicious slow-cooker applesauce. Apples, lemon juice, cinnamon and vanilla extract. That’s it, and it’s so good! It turns even the blah apples, into delicious applesauce.

I agree – showering controls my day too! But even more than shower, hair washing controls my week! I only wash my hair 2-3 times per week, so I save my sweatiest workouts for right before I wash my hair. Or I’ll stretch washing my hair out an extra day if I have a long run planned the next day. No way will I wash my hair and then do a long run the next day!

I completely agree with you! I let my workouts run my life as well since I also don’t shower until after and then life can’t start until after that as well! Good for you for just getting things done and not stressing about it!

Your garden looks gorgeous! I’d really like to start one of my own but since I’m allergic to everything outside in the summer, I don’t think I could tend to it enough. =( Oh well, I will just have to support the local farmer’s market!

Questions: I just started my own blog and was hoping I could add you to my blogroll? And lastly, do you ever end up having to wash your hair twice in one day? If so, do you use a different shampoo or anything since it’s supposedly “bad” to wash it so often?

If I need it I definitely wash twice. My hair looks best 3-4 hours within a wash and then it declines, so 2x a day is actually great for my hair! I could NEVER go just a few times a week!

I love that you talked about this; the shower/looking cute issue is seriously my biggest workout hurdle! During the school year it made the most sense for me to go to the class, then go to the gym, then go home and work. But when I do that I either wore yoga pants to class or only wore my “cute clothing” for class and then changed, and I hated feeling like I was “wasting” the cute clothing by not wearing them all afternoon. So instead I would have my husband drop me at the gym in the morning and then I would workout, walk home and shower, and then walk back to school. I love walking but it was sooo much wasted commute time!! I’m not really sure what I’ll do next year since I’ll be so much busier (and not always on campus with the dietetic internship clinical work).

    Hi Kath!

I just wanted to make sure you are being safe when stopping on a whim for a walk on a trail…ie at the very least letting someone know where you are and when you expect to return, and/or bringing your phone with you. It was hard to tell if it’s more of a park or a trail and how populated it is from your picture, but it’s not smart to walk alone on an empty trail!

On another note, I hate having to shower twice in one day! I often wait until after my workout but then that leaves me feeling gross all day!

Otherwise it messes up my eating, showering and errand schedule. Oh and I didn’t even mention the fact that anything can come up with the kids to keep me from working out. So, I get it done. I love it when the weather is nice enough to allow for a walk and no shower afterwards though. Perfect exercise!

I want to save some money too, but I don’t know how much time/effort is involved, up front costs, how long can I grow kale, how much produce can I expect etc etc?

I totally feel you on the showering front! I’m a trainer and teach in the morning and early evening, sometimes have clients in between and also do my own workout in between. It makes for a very scattered day and I still haven’t mastered figuring out the best time to shower! In fact, I totally haven’t showered yet today and am scrambling to get to the gym by 3 and teach at 5:30! Guess I better stop reading blogs 🙂

If you decide you do want to start biking to the grocery store, there are a lot of great options to make that a possibility.

Probably your best starting point would be a rack and panniers. I have a pair of heavy-duty waterproof Ortleibs. I bought them originally for touring, but despite a coast-to-coast bike trip, I think I probably have more grocery store miles on them than touring miles!

Here she is in all her glory!

The other suggestion I have is to look into getting some sort of cargo trailer. A friend of mine made a great flatbed trailer out of a secondhand child-carrier trailer. I, myself, have a chariot-style BoB trailer which has been invaluable to me when I’ve needed to haul heavier loads. I’ve gotten home 50 lb sacks of ice-melt, taken the recycling off to the recycling center, and brought home loads of groceries involving laundry detergent, canned goods, and watermelons. I’ve also used it to move other bikes around.

    Can’t beat that for utility!

Anyway, if you ever do want to get more into utility cycling, there are a LOT of great resources on the web and many folks who’d be glad to help you get going in that direction.

And let me tell you, a good cargo run is one HELL of a workout! 🙂

I already do bike to get groceries. I just haven’t been able to this week because it’s been raining. I have a rack and a nice side bag.

I hear you on that one! I have to plan out my days or evenings because I sweat like crazy after the gym. So it’s not like I can pop into the gym on my lunch break. No one wants to be near a smelly person!

I am the total opposite with the showers, def not necessary to me even after a long run. My husband is the total opposite and somewhat grossed out but he deals. Sometimes i run at lunch during work, i get changed in my car and i come back sweaty and salty, we have no showers. The days i swim, that is my shower!

I know its totally gross, I just cant be bothered-dont judge!!

I too struggle with the workout/shower issue! I hate having to “get ready” twice in one day and I always workout until I sweat buckets! I enjoy working out in the am so I can get ready and have my workout done for the day, but those mornings that I just cannot sacrifice sleep – I typically don’t shower until later once I’ve worked out! Most days this works out well but I’d never go somewhere that I had to be presentable until after I’ve showered! I’m glad there’s others who think like me! 🙂

When the bakery is up and running you should keep a bag of exercise supplies in the office.

I don’t have my own business, but work in an office and have a preschooler. So just in case the husband can randomly pick her up, then I head straight to yoga instead of thinking I missed out on an opportunity. Or I’ve also grabbed a friend and just gone and walked campus. I’m always ready.

I always try to work out first thing in the morning, as I can never go out without a shower. If I go out for a long walk around my neigbourhood I don’t shower before hand, or if I have and it’s hot outside, I will take another shower when I come back. I also wash my hair everyday. I can never go a day without washing my hair. 🙂

Thanks for being so open and honest about the daily workout / showering drama. I feel the same way! Somedays I just want to shower and get dressed for the day, and walk in my comfy jeans! I’m a big believer in listening to your body, and getting outdoors for fun and fitness. What a nice ‘pit-stop’ walk you carved out for yourself today, thanks for the inspiration. You make me eat and feel better!

I often feel that way about the gym too. Right now it works out pretty nice that I can go right after work and then home to shower and have dinner, but I rarely make it on the weekends for that reason. When I used to work from home, I also had this issue. I also walk everywhere so it adds another layer to all of it too lol… I am okay with just going to the gym after work most days and doing more active activities like hiking, walking the dogs, yoga, yard work etc on the weekends for now tho 🙂

My hair controls my life because it is so high maintenance – long, coarse, and frizzy/curly. Letting it air dry is just not an option. It takes two entire hours to wash, dry & style, so if I am doing it before work, I have to plan 3 hours to “get ready.” It takes 4+ hours at the salon, which is I don’t wash it every day, so I have to plan my week around hair washings! I hate it. I look at people like you & feel jealous because your hair looks like the kind of hair that would look fine even when it air dries. It is interesting that you also feel like your day revolves around showering/grooming. 🙂

I also deal with the coarse, frizzy/curly hair. I have found some things that work and enable me to let it air dry so that it looks “good.” I use sulfate free shampoo/conditioners (sulfates dry hair out) and I apply a small amount of Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny Serum (1-3 pumps depending on length/thickness) after I wash it. Then I use one of those twisty towels to wrap it up and help get some of the water out. Last is the curl creme; work from the bottom/back of the hair up. For me, I found that it takes more “product” to help it look good than I initially thought it would. If I decide to use a hair dryer to speed up the drying time, I use a diffuser (high heat, low speed). Hope this helps!

Non-wash days I use a dry shampoo. I wish I had known about them sooner!

Megs – Thanks for the response! These are great tips!! Super Skinny (Paul Mitchell in general) changed my life! I do also use sulfate free products. I tried the “Curly Girl” method for awhile, but now I usually straighten my hair instead of embracing the natural frizz/curl. I realize this is only exacerbating my problem! If I use a diffuser it takes less time, but my curly hair only looks good for about a day…and if I wear it curly too many days in a row, I guess the products build up and it is harder and harder to curl. WTF?!

Ah your garden salad makes me jealous! If my kale doesn’t die *crosses fingers* I am really looking forward to some kale-filled meals! I feel you about workouts determining your day – it used to be a (semi valid) excuse of mine for a very long time! Now I’m trying to plan my workouts ahead of time to make sure they’ve already got a solid time block in my day!

So jealous of your garden!! My outdoor “space” is limited to a fire “escape” (it doesn’t go anywhere, just a little balcony..) and things don’t survive too well out there.

Wow, may I be a tiny pro-shower voice around here? 🙂 I have an office job and love hot showers. I routinely shower 2-3 times a day. Morning and post-work out or before bedtime and after gym. Or morning, post-gym and evening on hot days. Sure, mid-day exercise requires a little planning but it never deterred me (and many other women and men who come to the same gym) from looking stylish and professional at work.

I totally get you about workouts dictating the day! I feel that way too which is why I try to workout first thing as much as possible! Also I hate cancelling on plans/saying no because it interferes with my workout so this solves that issue too!

So fun that you’re growing your own leaves! Do they taste any different than the organic kind from the supermarket?

You just have to embrace the dirtball-ness, Kath! It is totally common for me to run errands/go shopping/etc. unshowered and un-make-up’d. On the 2 days/week I work from home, I generally don’t bother to shower at all unless we are going out-out after work (like dinner or drinks). In the summer, when outdoor workouts make me much sweatier, I do shower every day, but at night since we work out after dinner when it’s super hot.

I just wash my hair every other day, so like other commenters have mentioned, I tend to schedule my harder workouts around that, haha. I guess we all have our schedule-dictators. 🙂

I’m with Charise (above) — embrace your unshowered self! I go to the grocery store, Blockbuster, etc. after I’ve worked out. I figure if people are offended by my post-workout smell, they don’t have to smell me!

I totally relate to what you said about the workout/shower. I think the post-workout shower/hair drying can take as long as the workout. On Saturdays I do the same thing not showering until after I workout.
