Cottage KERF Living Room

Welcome to our home in Charlottesville, VA!

IMG_9497Blog

We start the tour just inside our front door, in the foyer + formal living room.

IMG_9498Blog

[Note the door is changing and the storm door will be banished in time!]

IMG_9496Blog

Just inside the door I have a chest that my dad won in a contest at a furniture store. It stores our keys in the metal bucket and also houses gloves, scarves and hats plus the top drawer full of misc. “I’m going out the door” things like sunglasses, Garmin and chapstick. All out of sight!

IMG_9499Blog

To the left we have a Crate + Barrel storage unit that also serves as a landing spot for things like Matt’s hat or the mail before I swoop them away to better locations!

IMG_9511Blog

Inside you’ll find all of my linens!! These boxes are from IKEA

IMG_9519Blog

Above that is our Starry Nights Over Wine Country painting – a souvenir we bought on our honeymoon that I had framed at Michael’s.

IMG_9517Blog

More wedding items include these green balls that were in our centerpieces which sit next to an oil lamp my grandmother gave me that I had re-shaded.

LivingdecorBlog

And straight ahead – you peek into the dining room

IMG_9541Blog

Just around the corner is our coat closet. This is our third house but our first coat closet! I love having it here just for big coats and my purse of the week. The top shelf basket has rain gear like ponchos and umbrellas.

IMG_9531Blog

Our couch and chairs are inherited from Karen’s old house (my mother in law). When she moved out she got new furniture and gave us the couch, two black arm chairs, pillows, the black diamond end tables and lamps on top. She also gave us the rug – which was cut down to fit her Charlottesville home and we got the scraps – which were quite big!

My little modern coffee table is IKEA – I hope to get something grander some day.

IMG_9501Blog

The chairs on the other side of the sitting area were my grandmother’s. They were red velvet and I had them reupholstered a few years ago into this funky green pattern. See their before look here and here. See the decision making process here.

IMG_9505Blog

The corner houses a matching Crate + Barrel cabinet topped with a Crate + Barrel lamp (wedding gift!) and many bowls from my dish collection. The vases on top are TAG brand that were featured in OpenSky. The cake stand and Great White Platter are Pottery Barn!

IMG_9502Blog

IMG_9494Blog

The bookcases on the far wall are Billy bookcases from IKEA.

BookcaseBlog

They are two wide cases side-by-side with the glass doors and the extender unit on top. Also the matching lights. Please note not to forget the 2 extra cords if you purchase these lights! Love this bookcase.

IMG_9506Blog

Another item of note – a beautiful Charlottesville map my friend Meredith made for us!! <3

CvilleBlog

The curtains in this room were a Pottery Barn splurge when we bought our first house in Charlotte – dupioni silk and my favorite shade of green

IMG_9530Blog

Also off the living room is the walk-up attic, a huge selling point of this house!

IMG_9523Blog

The inside door houses some of our cleaning supplies as well as all of the boxes that come to my house that we break down and recycle about every other week:

AtticstorageBlog

Up top we have TONS of storage including luggage, Christmas décor, memorabilia, a folding bike, the footboard to our guest bed and more.

AtticBlog

Right outside of the attic you’ll find a painting of the Burwell School in Hillsborough – where we had our rehersal dinner!

The Living Room

I love how your living room is so bright and airy. There’s also a really nice mix of modern and antique (like the Ikea bookcases and coffee table, as well as the reupholstered chairs). It feels very comfortable. 🙂

I love your living room. It is actually very inspiring. You have so many meaningful pieces – love the fact that you reshaded the oil lamp & reupholstered the chairs – sounds obvious, but I actually never think to repurpose heirloom gifts. The way that you combined everything also inspires me. It is not matchy-matchy and I would have never thought of putting lots of those things together, especially with the blue walls — but it totally works — everything goes together and looks fantastic. Finally, it is bright, airy, clean & simple, but it still has personality. A+! 🙂 Thanks for letting us have a peek!

Your home has come together beautifully! Fab post! I went back to look at the decision post on your chairs…so I know totally too late, but I realized that your chairs include upholstery on front and back. I would have been fun to do the big print just on the backs of each chair, but I love the smaller one best…great choice!

I also enjoy how you incorporated various aspects of your wedding into it. I was at World Market the other day dreaming about the day I can decorate a home of my own (no rhyme intended!). The living room is so fresh and inviting, and I adore the cases for the dishes…a girl can dream! Someday we’ll get to settlIe down and really invest in “our” place, wherever that ends up being…but until that day I am loving picking up ideas along the way, and the way that the colors, the furniture and your very personal touches just make this room SING! I really love how such light vibrant colors still make the room feel very warm and homey…I’m usually a brown, red, taupey gal for living rooms…but this gave me hope to break out of my shell!
