Chip Off The Block

IMG_1371

I really wanted to go for a walk this morning, but it’s just sooo humid in combination with the hot temps, and despite sunscreen, my shoulders are turning brown! So instead I kept my workout inside and did my Expecting More DVD. It was actually lots of fun – I did the Sports session – a total of about 45 minutes of fun. Karen watched while I pushed my bump this way and that while she got dressed in the guest room!

Operation Iron is going really well, but Operation Omega-3 is always slacking. I guess not entirely so because I do eat seafood and fish a lot when I go out to eat, but as far as lunches go, I have to be in the perfect mood to crack open a tin of fish. Luckily today I was – lured by the thought of chips!

IMG_1376

I made a salad with the following: 1 can Trader Joe’s smoked trout (better than tuna, less fishy than sardines and salmon!), 1/4 chopped bell pepper, 1 chopped tomato, 2 tbsp chopped pickles, 1/4 cup corn off the cob, 1/2 tbsp light mayo, 1/2 tbsp dijon mustard, salt and pepper.

Dunked into Red Hot n Blues!

Some ‘loupe on the side

Matt and I both have to run errands in the same area of town, so he’s picking me up in Blue Betty and we’re going together! Makes it all the more fun : ) He is also bringing me a triangle of S’more cookie – my new GH fav!

Nice job on the iron Kath! What about adding chia seeds in to your oats and smoothies for your omega-3s? I know you already do so maybe you’ve exhausted this option. Salmon is definitely my favourite source! 🙂

Chia seeds have ALA which isn’t nearly as good as the DHA found in fish and algae. So good, but not as good as fish

how about walnuts as a source for vegetarians…? I’m guessing it would be the same as chia seeds, and not quite as great as fishy sources?

Yup, or flax or hemp or canola oil, but yes, only ALA and not DHA (and the conversion rate of ALA to DHA has been found to be very minimal)

Re: DHA, Vegetarians & vegans can also take DHA that is extracted from algae! One of them is called Neuromins- I used to take it when I was vegetarian. It’s definitely good if you know you aren’t getting enough, just to be safe.

Hey Kath. Do you really only use a half teaspoon of mayo for a whole tin of fish? That almost seems like a negligible amount that you wouldn’t even notice. I am saying this as a mayo lover, so… 🙂

Smoked trout – hmmm. Sounds interesting but fish from a can kind of grosses me out. Is it really fishy smelling?

I live trout! But can’t find fresh trout out here in Va Beach to save my life. But we do have a Trader Joe’s. So this will be a lunch time mealbfor 1 for
    me.
I love how you can take something and add to it and it turns out yummy. You give me so many new ideas.

    Hey Kath,
I have a bone to pick with you. A post quite a while back about your friend Hillary coming over with that ice cream/gelato that was sea salt caramel. I finally found it and am addicted! A little pricey but worth it so much. I wish I never saw that post 🙂 Sooooo good. You’re costing me money:)

Hahaha. Your first line had my heart jump to my throat! “Oh no, what’d I do!?”

      Glad you like it!!

Remember ice cream cones out and about are upwards of $4 these days, so while it’s no cheap gallon, it’s comparable to going out for a cone!

    Kath,
COMPLETELY UNRELATED… but I thought you might know.

What is the nutritional benefit of coconut oil and/or coconut butter. I’ve heard many different things, but I wanted to make certain it’s not a fad. Annnnndddd…. when is it appropriate to use?

    Just curious.
    Love the blog.
    Best wished with baby,

What have you been doing to up the iron? I was wondering if you would start eating more read meat after they said you were low, but it hasn’t seemed like you haven’t.

But I love read meat and have no problem paying the price for local grass fed beef.
