‘Twas very busy at the bakery today – the best kind of days!!! Not just because we owners know sales will be good, but because busy-ness is good for the mind.
I worked on a bunch of things, including some photos of our merch for an ad and arranging some of our new basket holders!! So convenient!
Late afternoon the presence of my company was requested by these two turkeys – Andrew and his girlfriend Aneesha!
We took them to their very first wine tasting at Pollak
****OMG YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE THAT A SECOND CAMEL CRICKET JUST HOPPED INTO THE BASEMENT!!!!!!!!!!! MY HERO RESCUED ME FROM HIM. JUST LOOK AT THE SIZE OF HIM NEXT TO MATT’S FOOT!! FACT: THEY JUMP TOWARD THEIR PREDATORS TO INTIMIDTAE THEM [LEARNED THAT IN MY RESEARCH LAST NIGHT]

Karen and I shared a flight – the Cab Franc and Petit Verdot were my favorites, although I also loved the Viognier (but it’s just not white wine weather!)
After finishing up working back at the bakery, we closed down for the night and headed over to Karen’s for Act II of Thanksgiving Week Celebration time.
Her friends Catriona and Jim joined us
We started with some cheesy appetizers and a few bottles of vino. One glass for me – I was the driver.
Dinner was a feast of grilled chicken breasts, salad (which I was in charge of – apple, gorgonzola, macadamia nuts and almonds dressed in EVOO and lemon, salt + pepper), roasted cheddar garlic and risotto.
This was the Organic Butcher’s herby marinated chicken – my favorite flavor!
A bit of Great Harvest pie for dessert!! Matt and I shared a piece –
We both have very early mornings and need to hop to bed. This week is quite the social occasion!

LITTLE DRAGONSSSS!
Athena says
I wish I could develop your habits of going to bed early and stop eating. I’m a huge huge bedtime eater and its very indulgent .
Becca says
Random question: but how tall was Jim?! He seems to be towering over everybody else in that picture!
I agree, it is totally red wine season. While I love whites and roses, I can’t stomach them this time of year.
KathEats says
Haha – I’m not sure, but he was tall!
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
I think the crickets want to be your friend. 🙂 Or eat you… hehe
That cheesy bread looks SO good. I could never be around that all day without picking at it.
Rachel says
i honestly couldn’t even see the cricket in the picture! i looked, i promise.
Angel7 says
Those camel crickets came at the right time… Thanksgiving! 🙂 They are looking for pre and post Thanksgiving treats all week (LOL)

That pie looks fabulous, Kath. I miss you! Hope all is well; have a wonderful Thanksgiving and hope to chat soon. Your home looks beautiful and I’m so happy for you.
xoxo
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
You are giving me the impression that VA is full of bugs!! haha
Lauren says
2 camel crickets 2 nights in a row? The horror! Sounds like you need one of my dogs to come over and scout them all out. He can find a bug hiding anywhere.
I asked my grandparents to pick up a loaf of Stuffing Bread and Cinnamon Chip on Tuesday or Wednesday since you Great Harvest Cville be open when I’m down. Should’ve added in cheddar garlic too! Oh well, guess I’ll have to visit again 😉
Natasha says
I rarely comment but read daily. I am in New Orleans so immediately noticed the New Orleans Food book in your photo. Love your website!
KathEats says
Aneesha and Andrew live there and brought it!
Clare @ SweetnSimple says
I’d LOVE to come visit your bakery – everything there always looks incredible!
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
You and the crickets…you are having quite a time of it over there!
That pie in the last pic…NICE!
Brandy says
Crickets – YUCK. Maybe you should set off a bug bomb fogger thingy? I set one off in my apartment one weekend when I went out of town and I haven’t seen a bug of any type (knock on wood) since, and I was having massive ant invasions on a daily basis, bleh! I know it’s totally a NOT green way to deal with the problem, though!
KathEats says
I think I’d have to have a true infestation to get one of those…
Christine @ Oatmeal in my Bowl says
I could definitely go for some of that salad and pie for dinner. Nice.
Khushboo says
Salad and pie- definitely my idea of a balanced meal 😀
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says

Nice, what a fun day!~Except for the cricket. Matt’s expression is priceless! He looks like he’s thinking, “what? you’re scared of this lil thanggg?” or…”I’m so scared but I’ll try NOT to show it” 😛
Hannah @ Sparrow + Spark! says
The dinner looks gorgeous! I have been slacking on veggies lately, so all of the salad looks delicious!

looks like a really fun afternoon/ evening- wine tastings are great! And that pie- dense and sooo sticky and delicious looking!
Kori says
You and I are EXACTLY the same when it comes to cave crickets!! Several years ago my friend and I researched them, and we found out that same fact. Ick!! I’m glad your Matt rescued you, though. ;-p My ex-boyfriend but best friend, Matt chased me one time with a cave cricket that was playing dead (!!) in his hand! On a better note, it looks like your evening was wonderful and the food just excellent. Can’t wait to read your posts today!
KathEats says
I cannot stand it when people chase you wtih your fears. That’s happened to me too before 🙁
Lauren J says
I was told they jump toward you because their vision is backwards, meaning they think they are jumping away but they are actually jumping toward you. Don’t know which is worse haha!
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
Your salads always look so tasty! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a camel cricket. From your reaction, I don’t think I want to!
Logan says
You don’t!!
Lauren says
Nice touch on the gift packages. These always seem to be a big hit around the holidays.
Sarah@The Flying ONION says

Cheese…bread…and wine…yummy! Your evening meal looks like a gastranomical delight!
Amanda says
I didn’t realize GH also sold pies, but that looks fantastic! Is it pecan pie? Pecan is one of my favorites. 🙂
It’s hard to see the cricket in that pic, but the fact that I can even see it at all – I know it must have been huge. That would send me into an all out panic attack. And they jump towards their predators?! I hate bugs!!
KathEats says
Not all of them do, but we do!
Meredith says
I literally spent the last couple of months reading through every single one of your posts from the last four years whenever I had the chance… amazing how much your photography, and your attitude towards food has evolved in the last four years :). You have such a beautiful relationship with food, it’s so admirable :).
KathEats says
Thanks Meredith!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
It sounds like the camel cricket situation is getting out of control over there! Do I need to call in reinforcements? Hehe. 😉
KathEats says
Yes, please send all cats.
Karen says
Your camel cricket killing hero’s laid back expression vs. your momentary meltdown is priceless! What a good sport he is 🙂
What a fun day! Here’s to another…

Dinner looks absolutely incredible. Love the shot with the fireplace popping in the background.
Is that pecan pie? Can you believe I’ve never once had a slice of pecan pie?? Whatever it is, it looks delicious and I want it 🙂
Glad you got some good family time – there’s nothing better!
KathEats says
GIRRRRLL! Fix that now!

~Christy @ wonderofallthings says
Bakery’s lookin’ good! And food doesn’t look too shabby either!
Jenn says
Hi Kath, I’ve been a long time reader and love your blog! I’ve noticed that you almost never use vinegar in your salads. Is that just because you don’t like vinegar, or is there another reason?
Thanks!
KathEats says
I just think it overpowers lettuce. But I do use an aged balsamic sometimes.
