Flatware.

IMG_1294Blog

It’s all lunchtime over here after a hard, hard Body Pump class with Sara and Katherine (and cute Chris!) Highlights of today were the 16 real pushups followed by tricep pushups, killer free-weight back track and 2 full songs worth of lunges. Ouch!!! I enjoyed the stretching on the floor the most.

Salad replenishment

IMG_1299Blog

Although this is no salad –it’s a meal!! Protein from eggs + whole wheat bread + cheese, veggies from lots of spinach + sweet potato + carrot, fats from oil + cheese + flax/walnuts in bread + egg yolk, oh and carbs!!…from bread + sweet potato : )

I aim for the major components for each meal to: bread (always the bread), protein source, dairy (yogurt or cheese), fat (avocados and oils and nuts) and vegs and fruit, and dessert(s).

I always love seeing what everyone’s definition of a “salad” is. I consider most of my lunches to be “salads” and they tend to be very similar to yours Kath. Mine today included some spring mix, roasted parsnips, carrots, cauliflower, leftover steamed frozen peas, roasted glazed chicken, cranberry goat cheese, pears and pecans. Tonight’s smoked salmon, roasted asparagus, smoked gouda and goat cheese quiche will certainly be part of my “salad” tomorrow.

What is the definition of a salad? This is the definition from Dictionary.com.
    sal·ad
    ? ?[sal-uhd]

    noun
    1.
a usually cold dish consisting of vegetables, as lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers, covered with a dressing and sometimes containing seafood, meat, or eggs.

    2.
any of various dishes consisting of foods, as meat, seafood, eggs, pasta, or fruit, prepared singly or combined, usually cut up, mixed with a dressing, and served cold: chicken salad; potato salad.

    3.
any herb or green vegetable, as lettuce, used for salads or eaten raw.

    4.
South Midland and Southern U.S. greens.

    5.
any mixture or assortment: The usual salad of writers, artists, and musicians attended the party.

      Interesting!

I think salads should be based around greens and vegetables. I hate when places like Wendy’s or McDonald’s market their salads – and it’s basically lettuce with walnuts, dried fruit, croutons, cheese, bacon bits and dressing. That stuff is great in a salad, but where are the rest of the vegetables?

I usually have a hard time eating what most restaurants serve as a side salad because I am so used to “salads” with more ingredients and flavor. To me, it is a waste of $2-3 for bagged iceberg, carrots and cabbage dumped on a plate. Some restaurants do have very good side and main dish salads, but I am also amazed at the poor quality of some salads. Of course I am also disappointed at the quality of some restaurant’s main dishes (and the rest of their menus) and shocked at the prices they charge. I guess it’s a good thing I enjoy cooking!

Dude. I did Bodypump instructor training this weekend. It was NO JOKE. I’ve never in my life put my body through something like that- yesterday we literally did not stop working out for 8 hours. At one point, we had to double the weight that we normally use on our bars for EVERYTHING and do 4 minute circuits for each move. (You would have loved it, right??)
And I had to teach the lunges track (uuuugggggh) from 79 about 50 times over the last 2 days. I can barely move today- but man, I have a new-found respect for Bodypump instructors everywhere!

A really good high quality olive oil, yes. Along with sea salt and a drizzle of honey, lemon juice or balsamic. I really don’t like most pre-made salad dressings..

I just wanted to mention that you don’t need a lot of oil. Just a little (maybe a teaspoon) is enough. If your leaves are drenched in any type of dressiing – you used too much!

How many body pumps do you go to a week? Don’t you find that it does amazing things for your legs?? With the insistence of my personal trainer I have gotten very attached to the PRE workout warmup and stretching, and find that it’s been very beneficial to the workout performance.
