Workout Blush

April 6, 2009

Don’t you love days when you get the “workout blush”!? I had one today and it was accompanied by a great workout: 30 sweaty minutes on the stepmill, 15 on the squirrelliptical and 10 of lunges/upper body lifting. I think it was the warm weather that jumpstarted the good, warm workout.

I remembered to take note of my stats again:

Time: 57:19

In Zone: 35:04

Avg. HR 155

Max. HR 174  (prob. in the last 10 minutes of the stepmill – I was sweating buckets!)

Calories burned: 455

I came home super excited about Spring Blend. It has my very favorite flavors: caramel and butterscotch. And it has the most beautiful label!

I was also in oat heaven today thanks to two new ingredients: Trader Joe’s Blueberry Fruit Preserves and Fresh Market Bourbon Sugared Pecans (<—- NOT low fat at all and covered in buttery sugar! Use sparingly :) )

The mix:

  • 1/3 cup oats, milk, water, half banana, pinch salt
  • 2-3 tbsp wheatberries
  • 1 tbsp flax
  • 1-2 tbsp pecans + salted peanuts, chopped
  • 1 tbsp blueberry preserves
  • Spoonful MaraNatha Almond Butter

We’ve got an old fashioned rainy day over here, plus a cold front coming through :( This week should go by quickly though because my parents are coming to visit on Thursday!!

I just made a bowl of oats and tossed in three sliced strawberries as it cooked. The volume has increased dramatically – would it be from the added liquid or the added sugars?

Mmm, I just finished my own bowl of delicious oats. As for the weather – be thankful you don’t live in the mountains of NC; we’re supposed to get snow overnight! It’s April, I’m over this weather!

That’s the blueberry spread I use! My husband uses it in his PB & J everyday. Trader Joe’s rocks. Love the coffee label – we need some cheeriness on this dreary, rainy Monday!

Just the name squirreliptical makes me smile. I think of the Flinstones and that there are two little squirrels in the “pedals” making them go up and down.

I also think of the phrase, “I’m feeling a little squirrelly.” I pretty much live my life in that wide eyed hyperactive mode.

I love the oats and coffee! That blend and the pecans sound delicious. Ugh, we have rain that so desperately wants to be snow here in Athens, Ohio. Blech. Have a lovely Monday!

One more quick question on the pumpkin oats- what’s the longest you’d suggest keeping the leftover pumpkin in the fridge? Thanks!

So I bought some Annie’s Woodstock Dressing at the grocery today after I saw it a couple posts ago..It takes some getting used to flavorwise..I got it because it was on sale for $4.29.Is that a good price? I am curious how much it is in other states. Texas usually has lower prices. I think it is growing on me. I am eating a salad lightly tossed in it as I type this. Just curious if I got a good deal on it or not!

Totally know what you mean about the blush. Yesterday I came back from a great run; my BF looks at me and goes, “you’re pretty” (something I know he thinks but doesn’t say that often) even though I was all pink-cheeked and sweaty! I thought that was cute. My “blush” was partly sun, but since I wore sunscreen it was mostly from the workout. :-)

I LOVE oats too, especially the real stuff that takes a long time to cook, but ONCE, just once I’d like to see you eat oats without the spoonful of “whatever” butter. How about oats with just raisins? Your oat pictures sort of make me gag…too much stuff in one bowl, but it is obviously working for you, so I will just avert my eyes during the oats presentations (and I can really tell you love this stuff because you have FOUR pictures of it!)

With that said, I love your blog and your enthusiasm. I love that you advocate good nutrition, but are not all strait-laced about it. I love that you drink beer with your buds and over-indulge in dessert, occasionally (of course, your over indulgence would be most peoples being really, really good!)

Sorry for the long comment, can’t wait to see what’s for breakfast tomorrow!

Hey Kath!

Not sure if you’re looking to find other ways to incorporate protein in your breakfast, but I’ll pass on the word to you anyway. I like to add a scoop of spiru-tein to my oatmeal. It also includes calcium in it as well.

Kath, your love and enthusiasm of oats is what got us all hooked! I must say, you are the oat queen and I wouldn’t change anything about that! nothing can replace a good old spoonful (or 2!!) of nut butter in the morning with warm, creamy oats! Every morning you have a different combo-it’s SO refreshing!!!

Hi Kath,

My boyfriend recommended I check out your blog after watching your story on current tv. I am now addicted!! I check in often to learn about what you’re eating and your exercise plan. You have been inspirational in the short time I’ve been reading your blog and I appreciate your sharing your story.

Thanks,

Lisa ,
My guess would be from water volume. Sugar wouldn’t affect volume.

Allison ,
I keep it for about a week.

Red Head, Yellow Dog,
Thanks for the head’s up – that link is always broken!!

KatieTX ,
That’s about what mine was. It lasts a while though, and it’s unique enough to justify.

Greta ,
They were Awesome!!

little cat,
Well I was going to have yogurt with mango tomorrow for breakfast, but now I’m thinking of switching to oats – with nut butter of course.

Katharina ,
I need to Google Spiru-tein and see what it is….OK I am back. Sounds like an interesting product, but not something I’d want to spend money on since it wouldn’t contribute much in the way of flavor or crunch/chew.

for the love of peanut butter,
Thanks ;)

Eileen,
Thanks and welcome!

Kath
