White Blanket –> White House

January 20, 2009

SNOW DAY!!!! Winthrop classes are canceled!! But I didn’t have any anyway. Still fun to see it though!

IMG_0708 (768x1024)

I had the same excitement as Christmas morning when I opened my eyes this morning and hopped out of bed to peek outside – a white blanket covered everything!! We’ve got about 2″ and it’s still coming down. It doesn’t look like sledding snow (to fluffy and wet, plus I don’t own a sled) but boy would that be fun. The husband went to work in it at 4 this morning, but he should be home mid-afternoon. Hopefully we can take a walk. I just heard the word that we’re expecting 60* on Friday, so I better enjoy it while it’s still in solid form :)

I did 20 minutes of Heart Opening Flow this morning followed by a big bowl of pumpkin. I think I’m going to turn orange this week because I opened a 28 oz can of pumpkin!

Today’s bowl was amazing:

  • 1/3 cup oats, vanilla soy milk (Costco), water, half large banana, pinch salt, pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin, stirred in at end
  • 1/4 cup cottage cheese, stirred in at end
  • Drizzle pumpkin butter
  • Coconut + coconut butter (in honor of snow!)
  • 1 crumbled coconut oatmeal cookie
  • Spoonful Barney Butter

More coconut!! Coconut Chai Tea

I’ve got my space heater on and blew a fuse this morning!!! I had to trek out in the snow in my slippers and pajamas to reset the box. Ugg. Then the cable was out for about 15 minutes while the box reset. It’s back on now and I’m watching some inauguration commentary. I actually got a good 30 minutes of school tasks complete between yoga and breakfast, so I will be able to watch TV today.

I also need to go grocery shopping (I might walk there in a few actually) and hopefully get to the gym at some point today.

Back to the tube!

hahaha a snow day?! Won’t the snow be melted by 11am? I’m just teasing you- I know you guys don’t have any snow equipment down there! 😀 When I lived in Georgia the town shut down for days from only a few inches of snow! It was crazy.

I LOVE SNOW DAYS!! Enjoy it!

2 allijag January 20, 2009 at 9:15 am

Aren’t snow days the best? Too bad it wasn’t on a day you actually had class!

Have a great day!

3 nm January 20, 2009 at 9:19 am

not sure if anyone has mentioned this but i just saw this news article online this a.m. (new details on the pb recalls):

“…Golden Valley, Minn.-based General Mills said Monday afternoon that it was recalling…flavors of snack bars: LARABAR Peanut Butter Cookie….Clif Bar & Co.’s also Monday recalled some Clif branded bars — including some under Luna and Clif Mojo labels…”

4 Beadie @ What I Ate Yesterday January 20, 2009 at 9:19 am

The snow looks pretty! We haven’t gotten any here :( Enjoy your day!

5 laura January 20, 2009 at 9:25 am

Its so funny to see a snow day for 2 inches. Thats nothing here in NJ.

6 fitforfree January 20, 2009 at 9:29 am

love snow days, esp. in the south :-)

just finished one of those mammoth cans of pumpkin myself . . . I’m probably orange too!

7 Liz January 20, 2009 at 9:34 am

8 beck January 20, 2009 at 9:38 am

9 JENNA January 20, 2009 at 9:39 am

that sounds like such a cozy day!! enjoy it :)

10 Charlie Hills January 20, 2009 at 9:40 am

Here’s how my mind works: I saw that first photo of the 28oz of pumpkin and thought, “Is that your breakfast?” I can just imagine eating spoonfuls of pumpkin right outta the can. Now that’s dedication. :)

11 Nicole January 20, 2009 at 9:41 am

Snow day! Nice. That is crazy that on Friday it’ll be 60! I wish that happens here in NYC!

12 Jen January 20, 2009 at 9:42 am

SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) I am jealous….. :)

YUMMY oats this morning!

13 Janna January 20, 2009 at 9:43 am

That bowl looks great. I really want to make pumpkin oats, but I never know what to do with all the leftovers? How long can it keep in the fridge?

Hope you have a relaxing day!

14 Amanda January 20, 2009 at 9:44 am

How pretty!

15 Mara January 20, 2009 at 9:46 am

2″ and you got a snow day?! Thats nuts!! It takes at LEAST 4″-5″ for us to get a snow day…

16 jennifer January 20, 2009 at 9:52 am

God, I wish I could like pumpkin in oats! No matter how I’ve tried it, it just tastes NASTY to me in oats, yogurt… except in desserts!

17 Red Head, Yellow Dog January 20, 2009 at 9:52 am

Yay snow day! It’s still coming down pretty hard here! We’ve been told not to go out on the road unless it’s necessary! Crazy! Guess I’ll be figuring out some inside exercises to do!

18 Ally January 20, 2009 at 9:54 am

hehe, we’ve had 104.5 inches of snow this year so far in Syracuse!! Your snow looks great though!! I remember those days when I lived in SC. There are never any snow days here, especially for colleges. I really need to get out and take advantage of it though, we get so much it’s hard to enjoy it sometimes but especially when it’s been so cold like lately – single digit highs last week. I just hate that the roads get too slushy/slippery to run. :( I don’t think I can make myself go back to a gym for cardio ever after running outside so much.
Definitely have a snowball fight with the husband or something later!!

19 Stephanie January 20, 2009 at 9:54 am

A snow day for 2 inches?!?!?! I WISH!

20 Mel January 20, 2009 at 9:55 am

Yay for snow days!

Your oats look mighty good this morning!

21 K January 20, 2009 at 9:55 am

Haha your snow day cracks me up! Enjoy it!!

22 Meg January 20, 2009 at 9:59 am

You can never have too much pumpkin! Enjoy the snow, but stay warm.

23 Amy C. January 20, 2009 at 10:01 am

Your snow day is another reason I need to leave New England! I want a snow storm that only consists of 2″ followed by a 60* Friday! :)

24 VeggieGirl January 20, 2009 at 10:06 am

I envy your snow day!! Classes for me – boo. Enjoy :-)

25 Sharon January 20, 2009 at 10:07 am

Sounds like a great day planned!

26 haya (living and learning) January 20, 2009 at 10:08 am

snow days are awesome, though i was always disappointed when they happened on days that i didn’t have class anyway!

although i’m not a kid and i do live in a part of canada where a ton of snow is a regular occurance (i have 7 foot tall snowbanks on either side of my driveway), i am still enthralled by big snowfalls. we went snowshoeing in the woods this weekend and it was almost magical. everything is prettier when covered in white, and the snow makes things so perfect and quiet.

27 Sarah (Tales of Expansion) January 20, 2009 at 10:16 am

you got a snow day for 2″?? haha, I need to move south.

enjoy your day off!

28 kpteabuzz January 20, 2009 at 10:30 am

can anyone recommend a good at home workout video for cardio/toning. I go to the gym, but I’m looking for something to mix it up. Thanks!

29 Biz January 20, 2009 at 10:31 am

I lived in Virginia for a year, worked at a bank, and as I was getting ready I heard that my bank was closed because of the snow. What?? I looked outside, and there may have been an inch of snow and no one was driving – so strange!

This coming from growing up in Chicago, where the only time school got closed was when the air temperature was -10 degrees – never for snow!

Enjoy it while you can, and if you could send your 60 degree weather my way, I would appreciate it!

30 Lori January 20, 2009 at 10:39 am

Okay, I just had to laugh about the snow day with that amount of snow!

We’ve got feet of snow up here in upstate NY, and the kiddies still have to get to classes.
Moving south could be appealing.

Enjoy your day!

31 Christy January 20, 2009 at 10:46 am

I love your snowy oats! I am also curious as to how you are going to use up that can of pumpkin. I have the same large can and am scared to open it unless I know I can use it before it goes bad. Obviously I can bake pumpkin goodies til my hearts content, but I am hoping to come up with some uses for it in meals instead.

32 Victoria January 20, 2009 at 10:53 am

Oh man, I’m a bit jealous. We had -15 degree weather and 6 inches of snow, and they still didn’t cancel my college.

33 Sara January 20, 2009 at 10:58 am

Wow! Snow day! Your pumpkin oats look so good! I love pumpkin.

34 K January 20, 2009 at 11:10 am

Snow day – wow! I’m actually glad I live in the midwest and am not scared of the white stuff, and can still “function” when we get pretty much any amount of snow…

35 Diana January 20, 2009 at 11:15 am

I wish I had a snow day today!! Enjoy it while it lasts!

36 Sarah (lovINmytummy) January 20, 2009 at 11:18 am

I’m out of pumpkin…can I borrow some of yours?

The oat bowl was a beauty, complete with coconut snow!

Enjoy your “kind of” day off!

37 brandi January 20, 2009 at 11:18 am

Have fun on your snow day!

Your oatmeal looks yummy

38 megan January 20, 2009 at 11:19 am

I love how excited you are about snow! Here in Michigan we are ready for it to stop snowing, so thanks for giving me a fresh perspective :)

39 bobbi January 20, 2009 at 11:26 am

Kath I am so jelouse of all the snow. I mean I love So CAL but I think winter is already over here! Love the oats, mmm!

40 Julie January 20, 2009 at 11:34 am

A snow day for 2 inches of snow, hilarious! Snow days are a good time though!! I get one everytime we get enough snow to require a state of emergency, which is about once a year. Already had one in December!

The oats looks fab and sound delish.

41 Missy (Missy Maintains) January 20, 2009 at 11:38 am

Love your oats! I need to get a can of pumpkin after seeing that! So lucky about the snow day!

42 Kate January 20, 2009 at 11:43 am

Argh!!! I am so jealous! I was also in the mood for pumpkin this morning…must be the snow.

43 Sarah January 20, 2009 at 11:51 am

Snow day for 2 inches of snow? How cute!

Question re pumpkin oats. I love all things pumpkin but do not like bananas. I am trying to start liking them and/or sneaking them into things where I won’t taste them much. Can you taste the banana much in your pumpkin oats?

44 Vanessa January 20, 2009 at 11:56 am

Oooh, I miss snow days! I haven’t had one since high school. It takes some pretty extreme weather to keep people inside in Winnipeg :P.

45 seelee live (for the love of peanut butter) January 20, 2009 at 12:02 pm

its snowy and pretty here in philly, too :-)

have a beautiful day!

46 runjess January 20, 2009 at 12:10 pm

Speaking of pumpking, I think it makes me run faster. Let us know if you feel better during your gym workout.

47 zestycook January 20, 2009 at 12:18 pm

yay for snow! Enjoy watching Obama… he is a great speaker!

48 Candice January 20, 2009 at 12:29 pm

Hi Kath! I’ve never commented before, but I’ve been reading your blog for a few months now. I just want to let you know that you’ve really inspired me to be healthy for myself — not to refuse a second cookie because it’ll make me “fat,” but rather because I’m satisfied and it’ll make me feel better. :)

Those oats look amazing, as usual! Do you alternate between 1/3 and 1/2 cup of oats? Like, do you use 1/3 cup when you want more leeway with the toppings?

49 Ashley H January 20, 2009 at 12:42 pm

Hi Kath I have been meaning to ask you… For xmas I got a heart rate monitor!! :) It has been working great and I love it. It is great to be able to change activities and weight lift and know how many calories I am burning. I was wondering when you turn yours off to get an accurate calorie count. I have been waiting until my heart rate goes back down to normal and then turning it off and using that to determine my Net calories for the day. But I just wanted to make sure I was doing this write since I am trying to lose a little weight gain. Thanks!!

50 Marianne January 20, 2009 at 1:00 pm

So much coconut! Yum! And love the snow – I’m jealous. It’s just cold here, but clear, so we won’t see any snow. Enjoy it while it lasts!

51 Amanda January 20, 2009 at 1:01 pm

That’s so funny that you have a snow day when the roads are dry! I live in Michigan, and we just had a “cold day” on Friday because it was -15 with wind chill! Oh, and we got about a foot of snow this weekend. Two inches is a dusting here!

Well enjoy! Your oatmeal looks beautiful :]

52 Linda January 20, 2009 at 1:49 pm

Hi Kath,
This is the first time I have commented on your blog. I LOVE reading it and today’s post had me laughing. I love that your classes were canceled due to two inches of snow. I live in Jackson Wyoming and we get pummeled with snow all the time and school has not been canceled here since the 70’s. . .isn’t that crazy? Just to let you know what you’re missing out on, we got 5 feet of snow in one day. . .Christmas Day. Don’t you wish you lived here. . .ha ha :) Enjoy your snow day.

53 theoddbod January 20, 2009 at 1:50 pm

haha. snow day! no such thing up here in winnipeg, lucky duck

54 Shelby January 20, 2009 at 1:52 pm

I am totally jealous of your oatmeal!!! Mine was not nearly as delectable as your looks!

55 HangryPants January 20, 2009 at 2:24 pm

I love your snow day excitement even though you didn’t even have school! But seriously? There isn’t even snow on the street in your picture. 😀 Enjoy the day.

56 Kath January 20, 2009 at 2:31 pm

Sarah ,
The more pumpkin you use, the less you can taste the banana.

Candice ,
Thanks and welcome! Yes, I alternate depending on my mix-ins. If I’m doing a huge bowl of pumpkin, I’ll use less oats, or if I have wheatberries, I use less. If I’m just doing banana, I’ll do 1/2 cup.

Ashley ,
Yes, I just let it dwindle on during my cooldown and turn it off when I’m leaving the gym. Your HR will be elevated for a bit after a workout, and that counts.

Linda ,
Thanks for your comment!
