Waiting Patiently

September 1, 2010

No signs of Fall here……

Or are there?

My fruit bowl:

IMG_2028 (640x427) (2)

Mid-morning snack: apple season!

IMG_2031 (640x427) (2)

Mentions of plaid and back-to-school shopping

And pumpkin bread on the menus!

IMG_2034 (640x427) (2)

More pumpkin talk

AND, and…..look at the weekend forecast!!!

I biked downtown today to have lunch with my new friends Abby and Anna who are both starting as dietetic interns next week. We talked internship expectations and I gave them some of the materials I made during my internship to take with them.

IMG_2040 (640x427) (2)

We dined at Eppie’s, one of my fav lunch spots right on the mall. And despite the 97* outside, we ate al fresco just so we could bask in the sunshine

Santa Monica Salads for THREE! We each got the same thing.

IMG_2033 (640x427) (2)

This is one of the best salads in town, and I was in a chicken mood today. It’s a base of spinach with corn, tomato, goat cheese, DATES, champagne dressing [that is out of this world]

IMG_2035 (640x427) (2)

And a mini pumpkin loaf! Clearly the best part.

IMG_2034 (640x427) (2)

BYO water!

IMG_2039 (640x427) (2)

Workout part I today was biking there and back (~30 minutes round trip) and I’m going to do it again in a bit as we go pick up some farmer’s market veggies.

Once I got home, I realized Matt’s car was gone and I was locked out.

So I hung out with the Pea Family

IMG_2041 (640x427) (2)

And wondered how long I’d have to wait to get some water on this hot day.

Lightbulb! The hose!

IMG_2042 (640x427) (2)

[This shot was harder than it looks 😉 ]

IMG_2044 (640x427) (2)

And a swung until Matt came home. Only about 15 minutes later.

IMG_2046 (640x427) (2)

We just concluded a conference call for Great Harvest and are gearing up to get those veggies!

It is 95 here today, too. I’m not a fan of the heat and just craving Fall. But on Saturday it is supposed to be 68! :)

2 Freya (Brit Chick Runs) September 1, 2010 at 3:22 pm

Wow it’s hot where you are, crikey!!! It was about 75 here today and everyone was going ‘ooohh it’s so HOT today’ and at the weekend just gone, people were on the beach ‘basking in the heatwave sun’ according to the paper….haha, bless england 😛
Bad luck on getting locked out – that sucks!!

3 Heather (Heather's Dish) September 1, 2010 at 3:23 pm

i can’t wait til i get my first fall apple! so amazing…that and pumpkins really make me happy :)

4 lisasfoods September 1, 2010 at 3:27 pm

It’s hot here today too, but that doesn’t stop me from getting excited about autumn. I wrote a post about my love for September today.

Love that the lunch came with a mini pumpkin loaf. I’d love to own a little cafe or coffee shop one day, and sell meals like that.

5 barefootgirl September 1, 2010 at 3:28 pm

I’m so excited for fall veggies…. our CSA Farmer told us that the fields are FULL of winter squash!!!

6 Christine September 1, 2010 at 3:31 pm

I’ve yet to crack my first (can of) pumpkin this year (well since the spring anyway) but it will be soon. Very soon.

I can’t believe it’s Sept. already! It’s so weird not to have school to look forward to!

7 Andrea (@ Puppy Dog Tales) September 1, 2010 at 3:31 pm

I’m so jealous of your porch swing. That’s going to be a requirement at our next house. :) Yum..pumpkin. I still can’t find it around here!

8 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) September 1, 2010 at 3:32 pm

Sounds like a nice afternoon. Glad things are getting to normal there and life feels good for you! Have fun getting veggies!

9 Mary @ Bites and Bliss September 1, 2010 at 3:33 pm

It’s a hot one here, too! And it’s been so cool the past few days. Glad to see it’s gonna cool down some more for you soon! :)

10 Rachel (Two Healthy Plates) September 1, 2010 at 3:35 pm

I’m looking forward to the weekend weather in Ky too! I’m definitely wanting some pumpkin bread now!

11 Christina @ ilovefetacheese September 1, 2010 at 3:37 pm

loveee porch swings. I’m way jealous :)

12 Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter September 1, 2010 at 3:41 pm

I just bought some amazing bread from Great Harvest. Spinach & Feta and some dakota for some killer sandwiches :)

13 Lindsey September 1, 2010 at 3:44 pm

It’s cold and rainy here in Oregon. Speaking of pumpkin, I had a tasty sample of a pumpkin muffin with cream cheese frosting from Starbucks. And pumpkin spice lattes are back, so excited!

14 sweetersalt September 1, 2010 at 3:48 pm

Love that you drank hose water. When I was a kid I LOVED the taste of hose water versus sink water. Weird, it was probably grossness in my parent’s hose, but it somehow tasted / smelled like summer!

15 Sarah K. @ The Pajama Chef September 1, 2010 at 3:54 pm

it was about 92 here today. yuck! fall, come on please!!

16 Kristina @ spabettie September 1, 2010 at 3:55 pm

I LOVE porch swings!

I am so getting excited for fall… the SMELL of October, the pumpkins, the scarves and boots! :)

17 Nicole - yuppie yogini September 1, 2010 at 4:01 pm

Please blow some of that cool air south. I think we’re all ready for Fall.

18 Patten September 1, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Found your blog via a fb post about OpenSky by a fellow Davidsonian (I’m C’03)…and a few more steps. I live in Cville and would love to know where your shop is going to be. I’m not well linked in to the community (a grad student at UVa) but if there’s anything I can do to help get the word out about your business please let me know! Hope to see you around town.

19 Kath September 1, 2010 at 7:00 pm

Hey Patten! Store should open next spring if things go well. Let me know if you ever want to get together!

20 Patten September 2, 2010 at 9:28 am
21 Kath September 2, 2010 at 2:57 pm

I would love to go to Veritas – love that place. But we’re going to Top Of The Hops that day!

22 Patten September 3, 2010 at 8:05 am

ah, yes. you do have to choose between beer and wine that day. well, some other time then!

23 Jasmine @ Eat Move Write September 1, 2010 at 4:05 pm

A hot day to get locked out. That’s funny you filled up your water bottle with the hose. You’re lucky you didn’t get drenched!

24 Chelsea (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) September 1, 2010 at 4:12 pm

I love the signs of Fall, it’s my favorite season! Something about root veggies, foilage, and scarfs make me super happy. That chicken salad with dates looks outstanding!

25 Lauren at KeepItSweet September 1, 2010 at 4:13 pm

This heat is definitely not fall-like but I am sure that after a few months I will be missing this summer weather!!

26 Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine September 1, 2010 at 4:17 pm

I feel like I’m the only one who loves this weather :) It’s hot, but I love summer and I’m sad to see it go!! Definitely looking forward to pumpkin bread though!!

27 Holly @ couchpotatoathlete September 1, 2010 at 4:19 pm

Ugh, it is hot here in MN too! Not quite 90 degrees though :)

Champagne dressing sounds amazing, I think you should try making it at home (and sharing it with all of us, bwahahahaha!)

28 Pat Kilmain September 1, 2010 at 4:30 pm

I’ve read that you shouldn’t drink the water from your hose as the material of the hose esp when it is hot is not meant to be consumed.

29 Rachel in NC September 1, 2010 at 4:31 pm

FYI – be careful drinking from water hoses! Many of them are made from PVC, which can contain lead. I bought two hoses when we moved into our new house, and both labels said never to drink from the hose!

30 Leanne @ Radiant, Balanced & Fit September 1, 2010 at 4:33 pm

I am incredibly jealous you have such a pretty porch swing.

You are lucky Kath!

31 Christie {Honoring Health} September 1, 2010 at 4:39 pm

I was JUST, as in less than 5 minutes ago, telling my husband about all the mentions of fall in blogland and how it was almost 100 here today! I am ready for fall, I have had enough of this heat!

32 Chelsea @ Strawberry Sweat September 1, 2010 at 4:43 pm

It’s pretty warm here today too!! I keep hoping and praying for fall to come ASAP.

The salad looks delicious. I am glad to know that I am not the only one who brings waterbottles to restaurants sometimes :)

33 Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg September 1, 2010 at 4:46 pm

I know, it’s SO hot here too…but the weatherman says that fall is right around the corner!

34 Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat September 1, 2010 at 5:04 pm

I loved drinking hose water as a kid! Even though summer is almost finished (*tear*), I’m excited for fall because it means tons of pumpkin and butternut squash! :)

35 Lauren September 1, 2010 at 5:24 pm

Looks like you are in store for a beautiful weekend! :)

Mmmm, there is really a place on earth that serves pumpkin bread with their salads? That’s awesome!!

36 Maria @ Oh Healthy Day September 1, 2010 at 5:29 pm

All salads should be required to come with pumpkin bread. I hope this restaurant starts that trend right now. It looks so juicy and moist.

37 kyla September 1, 2010 at 5:29 pm
38 Stacie @ Imperfectly Healthy September 1, 2010 at 5:29 pm

Fall is my favorite season and I can’t wait until pumpkin everything comes back! Love it!

39 Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) September 1, 2010 at 5:36 pm

I love your butternut squash in your fruit bowl. So excited for fall.

The pumpkin loaf looks amazing by the way! I can’t wait to start using pumpkin in everything and anything again. 😀

40 Mama Pea September 1, 2010 at 5:36 pm

I wish you really had hung with the Pea Family. And I wish you’d bring some pumpkin with you. If I don’t find some soon, I’m going to start scooping it out of pies in the bakery.

41 Mary September 1, 2010 at 5:53 pm

its in the 90s here in Raleigh too! I just want to drink my pumpkin spice drink in a long sleeve tee and a scarf. it’s too bad that I drank it today iced because it’s 97 outside. boo.

42 Stacey September 1, 2010 at 6:12 pm

I’m so jealous of your pumpkin bread haha 😉 And the weather is totally un-fall-ish here too! It was like 98 degrees outside today! They say it’s supposed to get into the 80’s this weekend, but we will see about that. I went running on McAlpine greenway this evening and the water was all dried up :( I hope we at least get some rain soon!

43 Sarah (OC2Seattle) September 1, 2010 at 6:26 pm

So jealous of your heat! It rained all day here in Seattle yesterday and is in the low-70s today. I’m not ready for Fall – we barely had summer here!

44 Kath September 1, 2010 at 7:01 pm

RE. HOSE: This was an emergency! I will not drink from the hose on an ongoing basis

45 Simply Life September 1, 2010 at 7:08 pm

Oh that pumpkin loaf looks delicious!

46 Wei-Wei September 1, 2010 at 7:13 pm

It’s hurricane weather here in Shanghai… we had school off yesterday! That mini pumpkin loaf is too cute. And I can’t wait for fall right now… but it’s rainy and gloomy outside. :(

47 Lauren @ 40Apples September 1, 2010 at 7:16 pm

Oh my, that salad looks tasty! And the pumpkin bread!! Yum.
It’s hotter than blazes here and we’re all preparing for this epic storm… ugh. Can’t wait for cooler weather! I can actually DO stuff outside again 😉

48 Jo September 1, 2010 at 7:19 pm

Locked out? Next stop: the key cutting station at the hardware store! But on a nice day like today it’s almost fun to be locked out.

49 Hannah September 1, 2010 at 7:22 pm

Ohhhhhh, that was my favourite salad at Eppie’s too! You’re killing me! I’ll just have to recreate it… :(

50 Natalie September 1, 2010 at 7:29 pm

That salad looks so good!!

51 Paige @Running Around Normal September 1, 2010 at 7:34 pm

It’s supposed to be hot tomorrow but by Friday in the 70’s! Is it sad that makes me a little sad? heh
Sounds like you had a nice relaxing day:)

52 Lisa @bakebikeblog September 1, 2010 at 7:39 pm

It is Spring here – and my count down to summer has officially begun!! I cant wait!

53 Amber K September 1, 2010 at 8:03 pm

Holy cow that’s hot! Oregon already seems to be in fall as it is cold and rainy here.

54 Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ September 1, 2010 at 9:47 pm

I can’t believe it goes from 95 there to 75, that’s crazy. Enjoy the best of both worlds.

55 Kristen @ Kristen, Sweetly September 1, 2010 at 9:50 pm

I am NOT ok with August already being gone, when it still feels like I should still be enjoying June… but such is summer. So excited for the new temps this weekend. It’s so much better than the 95 degrees we keep having and the possible hurricane brewing around! Also, I am too jealous of that little pumpkin loaf.

56 Caitlin (EatFeats) September 1, 2010 at 10:33 pm

That is how the weather is in California, too. But the leaves are still falling to the ground and crunching under my feet!

57 Anne @ Food Loving Polar Bear September 2, 2010 at 1:53 am

I really want to try that champagne dressing!

58 whitney September 2, 2010 at 7:23 am

Despite the outrageous temperatures lately I still enjoy eating outside. There is something relaxing and peaceful about being outside and I know in the next few weeks it is going to get a little to chilly to do so!

Those salads look killer

59 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin September 2, 2010 at 7:33 am

This makes me want to hunt down a restaurant that serves pumpkin bread around here!

60 Melissa @ HerGreenLife September 2, 2010 at 7:46 am

I’m looking forward to a similar weekend forecast — should make for some lovely biking! We harvested a bunch of winter squash from our garden — definitely signs of fall <3

61 The Healthy Apple September 2, 2010 at 12:34 pm

Dyin’ for that chicken salad right now; that looks amazing…..I’m droolin’

62 Jennifer September 2, 2010 at 2:20 pm

Do you have a post that explains how to make overnight oats? I don’t understand…do you cook them before putting them in the jar? The idea of having an instantaneous breakfast waiting for me in the morning sounds heavenly!

63 Kath September 2, 2010 at 2:58 pm

Yup – instructions: http://www.katheats.com/?page_id=3889

No cooking necessary! The oats just soak
