The Brewery

February 22, 2009

Today was a whirlwind of beer brewing in our garage. Two of Matt’s coworkers came over and they brewed for over 6 hours! I was a patient wife despite the door to the kitchen opening 100 times and bringing gusts of freezing cold air onto my already freezing body. And the garage and kitchen got quite messy, but he is working on them now, so I’m just sitting tight.

Shortly after my breakfast post we went for a really nice run. About 5-6 miles of chitter chatter about life. We both agreed we had good runs – swift and not too tiring. When we returned we immediately hopped on our bikes and rode to Harris Teeter for a round of groceries.

I didn’t get hungry for lunch until 1:30 – it was a filling breakfast. I decided to make a sandwich on the Rosemary Garlic bread. This was 2 slices of turkey, 1 laughing cow, mustard and lettuce.

On the side I had a TJ’s Euro yogurt with blackberries, strawberries and walnuts

And some pickles!

And lastly, the Barbecue Popchips . Loved this flavor!! I’m not a huge fan of barbecue flavor in general, but I enjoyed eating these.

I spent the afternoon doing 4 hours of leptin research . Gosh this stuff is hard. Not only do I know nothing about biochemistry yet, but I’m trying to navigate the research of these professional scientists and their language. I made some progress though.

I paused around 4:30 to honor my hunger with this lovely bowl of mixed cereals in hot soy milk -

And enjoyed a tiny glass of mead that Matt’s boss brought over to join the brewing fun -

I spoiled my dinner appetite with my cereal, but was hungry enough by 7:30 to enjoy two slices of this pizza! Unfortunately this is my next Mushroom Channel recipe , so you’ll have to wait until early April to get the details, but you can learn everything you want about the best whole wheat pizza crust we’ve ever made over at Brew & Bake !

I’ve got another slice in my lunch for tomorrow!!

Thank you all for your kind comments on the Intuitive Eating post. I’m glad so many of you find the book interesting.

I had hoped to work on Biochem some more, but it looks like I just have time for an episode of The Office before I hit the hay. I’m tired today from not sleeping long enough last night, so I’m excited to get in bed early. I’ve got an early morning tomorrow too!

That pizza looks delish! Have you ever tried the whole wheat pizza dough from Trader Joe’s? If not, you totally should! I just recently made homemade pizzas with it, and can’t wait to do it again. It’s so fun to personalize your pizza!

You said: “I spent the afternoon doing 4 hours of leptin research. Gosh this stuff is hard. Not only do I know nothing about biochemistry yet, but I’m trying to navigate the research of these professional scientists and their language.”

To understand leptin, you first have to understand the hypothalamus and its role in monitoring and regulating the body and mind.

As always, I love your pictures.

Best wishes to you.

Pizza looks delish! I really do prefer homemade pizza over any store/chain brand.

Good luck with the leptin research. Scientific journal articles are not easy to decipher! It frustrates even me sometimes, and I have had 4 biochem classes..ick.

Michelle Hisae,
I have tried TJ’s WW dough and loved it! But the baker prefers to make his own.

Kelsey Miles,
Hahhahaa – good catch!! I remember I was going to put on walnuts and switched to almonds, but I guess my brain didn’t remember the switch!

Jim Purdy,
If you know anything about the soluble leptin receptor SLR please let me know!

I really enjoyed your Intuitive Eating post as well, and I’m definitely going to pick up a copy for myself. I still have about 30 lbs to go, and I feel like I’m in a rut!

One of the biggest things I’ve taken from your blogs that’s really helped me is the presentation of my food. When I take the time to cut the ingredients nicely, and put them on a cute plate, I just feel better about it. And I love that the close-ups of your food look so great, and then you back away and you realize just how small of a portion it is. That has REALLY helped me with portions sizes, is seeing how small they really are.

And I love it especially that your protein and carbs are dwarfed by your veggies and fruits on your plate, I’ve been doing that a lot more too.

I sure wish we had a Great Harvest around here, I would love to have something other than Health Nut bread!

Hey kath, if you have any questions about the leptin stuff or terminology feel free to ask me. I’ve worked in bio labs for over five years and so am very familiar with all the terms. Sometimes it really helps to have a person explain rather than a paper in a scientific journal :) .

Kath, I LOVE mushrooms. Check out my “Dinner in Pictures” post if you get a chance. On Saturday I had the most AMAZING mushroom risotto. The mushrooms were HUGE and there were tons of them!

Have a great day!

How many varieties of bread do you have in your house right now?

Reply

38 theoddbod February 23, 2009 at 12:04 pm

the soluble leptin receptor {SLR} (or ObRe) binds to leptin in the plasma, vs. free leptin which is found in the serum. I believe that it’s thought that having more leptin bound to ObRe is better than having chronically high free leptin (which is a sign of leptin resistance). The other leptin receptors (ObRa,b,c,d, f) are found in many different cells in the body, but the long form ObRb is probably of most importance because of it’s ability to signal in the cell.

We usually have 3 kinds!

Thanks!!! That summarizes all the research I browsed yesterday in a nice nutshell :)
