Look how they shine for you!
Stars and RW&B in honor of our fallen soldiers
I was in the middle of preparing a red, white and blue Memorial Day breakfast (since I have no clue what day it is and forgot yesterday!) when mom told me “DON’T EAT BREAKFAST!” Matt and I knew what was coming, so we shared this bowl of yogurt and fruit to get a little nutrition in before…
Dad surprised us with our annual beach trip donut breakfast! The only day of the year that donuts taste reallllly good! We’ve been doing this every beach trip since we were small, although in the olden days on the Outer Banks there was a great local shop we favorited. We like tons of flavor variety and filled donuts and cut them into small pieces so we can try as many as possible. My dad was going to go by Britt’s (local favorite) here too, but they weren’t open early enough.
My favorite turned out to be the chocolate one with white stars! But I love anything with sprinkles or frosting-filled.
Anyone want to test my blood glucose level now!?
Storm’s a brewin’ up the coast….but no sign of it yet! I’m mentally preparing to spend our last day here tomorrow tucked away with a book or a puzzle.

Aww the stars are so cute! I think I’d have to go for that zebra striped one though. Stay dry today!
As a miltary member, thank you. I lost two members of my unit a few weeks ago, so this year’s Memorial Day was more difficult than others (although I have regretfully buried more friends than I care to reflect upon).
On a happy note, those donuts look super yummy!!!
So sorry to hear of your loss xo
donuts taste really good any day!
Is the OBX donut place Duck Donuts by any chance? Those are the BEST donuts! love them, even though I’m not usually a big donut fan.
Cutting up the donuts like that is such a great way to try all of them!! Looks delicious!
How cute are those! What a cute tradition.
Love that you cut them into pieces so you can taste all of them! Perfect for enjoying all the doughnuts! Enjoy your day Kath!
Why oh why do things seem more appealing when they are in new or different shapes?!!? A star-shaped donut actually seems like a special occasion–and thus good reason to eat one–to me!!!
Donuts look amazing. I went to Smorgasburg (giant market of best food vendors and purveyors in NY) in Brooklyn on Saturday and there was this homemade donut stand… They looked out of this world. All really big and flavors like blood orange and hibiscus flower. I actually didn’t get one, now regretting it! haha!
Hope you’re enjoying the beach, really missing it this morning.

Oooh I haven’t had a doughnut in such a long time. Too long, I need to change that! Now if only I could get a Carpe Donut to come to Charlotte??
Those are my kind of stars!
I almost don’t mind when it rains at the beach – watching the storm roll in over the ocean is so beautiful!
Donuts bring back childhood memories for me too! I don’t recall our family ever buying a box full of donuts as my mom was a juvenile diabetic and donuts were not on her list of foods! So I used to love to stay over at my friends on the weekend because that was their tradition also…weekend breakfast box of donuts! I remember thinking this was heavenly…all the choices! It’s been awhile now…my boys have food allergies that do not allow us to eat donuts. I have tried to make them…perhaps I am due for another batch!
I love traditions like that
I hope you enjoy what’s left of your vacation!
I love traditions, and having a donut day during every beach trip sounds like a good idea! Those stars donuts look very cute!
oh man those donuts look delicious!! seriously tempted to grab one on my way into work…
Not a donut fun but love the tradition
Sometimes you just can’t beat a donut
.
What a fun tradition to have!!
you have me craving donuts now! i haven’t had one in forever… that needs to change!
I love your last picture of the sea and sky. Enjoy the “calm before the storm”…
A warm britts would be 1000 times better. A special after dinner treat one night maybe? Glad the weather is cooperating with your trip!
We’ve had them before and prefer flavors, but they are good!
I never eat doughnuts- it’s not that I don’t like them – I guess I just would never have one for breakfast since they don’t fill me up (well, I’d have to eat 5!). But, for dessert? I’d be in.
But I like your style of tasting each of them- I’d do the same!
As if donuts weren’t already difficult enough to turn down…
Donuts are such a “Dad” thing for me! We used to go every Saturday to Dunkin Donuts (followed by the Park and the Library) with my Dad when we were kids. My favorite was Boston Creme, with a carton of chocolate milk! My sisters loved the strawberry frosted and the white icing with rainbow sprinkles!
Enjoy the sun!
Those donuts probably would have spiked my blood sugar. I like donuts, but am very plain Jane when it comes to donuts
I like cinnamon and sugar donuts, and that is about it.

There is something about Dunkin Donuts on vacation that just tastes…amazing! I can relate. Glad you enjoyed!
I’m not generally one for donuts but I like the whole cutting them up to try because I do like to try the different flavors. A small bite and I’m probably good.
Donuts look yummy! We’re expecting a storm here in NJ later today, also.
I remember that you were not impressed with them on your New Orleans venture but the only “donut” I crave is a good ole beignet from the Cafe du Monde. My dad worked there when he was in med school and every Sunday morning he would bring us a sack of them still warm. I was only 2 or 2 at the time. Maybe it’s the memory that I crave.
Our family does the same thing. It’s a tradition to hit up “Duck Donuts” before leaving our yearly beach vacation in Duck, NC. Love it! The maple are my favorite!!!!
Fun! Another reader said the same place. I wonder if that’s where we used to go?
I bet it was. They have quite a following. I dream of their maple glaze for 11.5 months out of the year.
Yes! The maple glazed are best!
I was just about to comment about duck donuts! It is the best! I’m personally a fan of the peanut butter glaze though, or the plain ones rolled in cinnamon!
I used to get donuts all the time when I was a kid but haven’t had them in ages now!
Vanilla cream filled with chocolate frosting is always my favorite!!!
We have a donut beach tradition too! We go to the OBX and our fave is Duck Donut. I personally think they are the best donuts ever and look forward to them all year long.
I wonder if that’s where we used to go!? We used to go to Nags Head every summer
HA! My first sight of the donuts made me think, glad theres no GDM dx!
Great tradition – smart family!
Aw Britts! Donuts are donuts, I could take them or leave them. But Britts was a tradition for my husband & his dad before he passed away. So whenever we are in CB we go to Britts – the memory for him is better than any taste. =)
Lemon filled was my childhood favorite!
Those donuts are so cute! I love the star shapes!
I literally can’t remember the last time I had a donut! Hoping I can make or find really soft, pillowy, gluten free donuts sometime soon!
we have amazing donut places in LA but i do miss dunkin donuts!
wow those donuts look great.
Britts donuts are SO yummy!!! I do love all the flavors at DD too!!! Enjoy your last days. Looks like we’re gonna get the rain and wind! I am thankful for it for my garden!
I like that you got to sample them all! That’s how I would want to do it!
Haha what a great tradition! Also it’s nice to see blogs like yours that promote a healthy relationship with food instead of this recent obsession with extreme “clean eating”.
My childhood favorite doughnut was a jelly bismark. It was from the bakery on the corner, and we had them every Sunday. It had a granulated sugar coating, and the most delicious jelly filling. Memories!
