Hot Topics + Hot Tamales

July 25, 2009

Woke up wishing I’d had a real dinner last night instead of liquids and cookies. But that didn’t keep me from hitting the hotel gym.

A little fluid exchange, if you will. Out with the old and in with the new!! I drank 2 bottles of water while elliptically for 40 minutes and felt better.

Back in my room, I had a spa party!

EOS put some shave gel in the swag bags, and Suave gave me a full size mousse from their booth. And the Sheraton’s Bliss products are A.mazing!! LOVE the Mandarin Mint and I am totally hoarding them :)

I got a text from Eating Bender that there was oatmeal in the lobby and raced down!

IMG_9665 (800x600)

I put together a bowl of oats topped with tons of fresh berries, a little brown sugar, some raisins, a little bit of granola.

IMG_9667 (600x800)

I also got a milk for protein (which I actually went to exchange for a 2% for some filling fat) and a Tazo Awake tea

IMG_9666 (800x600)

And a banana for later if needed!

IMG_9664 (600x800)

Over breakfast I met Jena Wellness and the Traveling Mom over breakfast (who got us on “the list” for a cool party tonight!)

I also got this cute bracelet from posi+ivi+y for the National Positivity Movement.

Attitude is a Choice and Positivity is Contagious!

IMG_9670 (800x600)

The opening keynote today featured a talk on “Traditional Media Chops Meet A New Media Calling.” Speakers included Tina Brown, Donna Byrd and Ilene Chaiken.

IMG_9671 (800x600)

After the keynote, I headed over to Business Of You: Advanced Social Media, Syndication and Stats.

All things social media!

Twitter. Facebook. Kirtsy. BlogHer. Stumble Upon. Friend Feed.

And all things stats!

Google Analytics. Feedburner. Yahoo Pipeline. Google Alerts.

If you have 15 minutes and want to build your blog traffic:

  1. Tweet.
  2. Post on a few blogs.
  3. Visit Kirtsy.
  4. Visit Stumble Upon.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s a momentous day in Twitter Land!!! 1026 followers!!!

1026 Twitter

And then I went for a scheduled 10 minute shoulder massage in the Microsoft Lounge!!

IMG_9672 (800x600)

After my massage I found some veggies and hummus! I had a few veggies with a few pita chips

IMG_9673 (600x800)

LUNCHTIME!!! There was a huge spread of Mexican!

IMG_9674 (600x800)

We managed to find a table outside!! It was great to get out of the dark conference space.

IMG_9683 (800x600)

I made a big taco salad topped with just a tiny bit of each: refried beans, chicken, beef, guac, sour cream and jalepenos.

IMG_9676 (800x600)

Plus this awesome cornmeal and shredded beef corn husk tamale. I ate most of the corn meal and not much beef :)

IMG_9677 (800x600)

This lunch tasted so good because I was starving. But now I feel a little greasy on the insides.

IMG_9675 (600x800)

Jenn and I split desserts again! Tres Leches and a Chocolate Silken Coconut Cake.

IMG_9681 (800x600)

IMG_9680 (800x600)

IMG_9679 (800x600)

The chocolate was my favorite :)

Just a few more sessions, a keynote and a handful of parties and BlogHer 09 is over.

A sweaty gym session, lots of water, and fruit + oatmeal sounds like a great way to recover from your party-filled night. A good workout always makes me feel awesome. Sounds like you’re learning so much! Building traffic and studying stats is one of the most interesting aspects of having a blog, I think.

2 Kristen July 25, 2009 at 1:51 pm

Aw, I know just what you mean about greasy insides!

Thanks for the tips about getting more blog readers! More lovely readers would be amazing.

Enjoy the rest of Blogher!!

I love that mandarin mint stuff! I hoarded it last time I was at a Sheraton, too (which was like, a couple weeks ago).

Thank you for giving us such great recaps of your experience!

10 Shane July 25, 2009 at 2:41 pm

Whoa, if that is Ilene Chaiken of “The L Word” fame, ignore everything she says. That woman has symptoms of Teh Crazy.

11 Michelle Hisae July 25, 2009 at 3:15 pm

Day 2 food looks great. I love tamales – my aunt used to own a tamale company, and they were soooo delicious.

Way to sweat out the hangover and then eat a rocking breakfast – best thing for it!!

It sounds like you’re having a super interesting time. I’m pumped to hear your thoughts once it’s all over on how much you learned/how much new information there was and how worth it you think it was.

Also, that cake looks amazing!!

Beautiful pictures! The bowl of oats with the various berries looks especially appealing – the colors just scream, “I am delicious and good for you!” Thanks also for the tip about increasing blog traffic in 15 minutes. This is very helpful, as I just started my own food blog yesterday. 😀

Continue to have an awesome time.

Hey Kath! I just wanted to let you know that I really liked listening to your Pepsico interview that was posted online! It is so fun to hear you talk about your journey when I have been reading along with you for such a long time now. Thanks for everything you do and letting us take a peek into your life. It has also been great fun reading about your BlogHer conference adventures…and all the FOOD!

30 Joelle (The Pancake Girl) July 25, 2009 at 10:26 pm

Haha i love that fluid exchange line you wrote– that happens to be my hangover cure! I always (welll, almost always, let’s be serious) push my butt to the gym after a cocktail filled night or else I am even more of a mess all day.

31 Nina July 25, 2009 at 10:46 pm
