Remember this smoothie made from cooked oatmeal?

And this SIAB heavy on the raw oats?

Both were incredibly DOUGHY and I haven’t stopped thinking about them!

Last night I had the idea to combine the doughiness of overnight oats with a smoothie – to create a doughy smoothie!

I made it right in my Vita-mix and then put the whole thing in the fridge to soak. Then this morning, I blended up the overnight oats…

And voilà! A dough smoothie!

Dough Boy Smoothie

For TWO smoothies

  • 1 cup raw rolled oats
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 banana
  • Sprinkle cinnamon
  • Splash vanilla
  • Pinch kosher salt

Combine all into a blender, stir and put in fridge overnight. In the morning, add about 1/4 cup more milk (just to loosen things up) and whirl away. Top with favorites!

I added Hail Merry Orange Cinnamon Grawnola – which was AMAZING combined with the slight cinnamony smoothie. Plus a to-go packet of Justin’s Maple Almond Butter, which drizzled on very nicely, and coconut.

I’m gradually cutting back on coffee in anticipation for the warm spring day when I say “Enough!” It always happens!

Busy day ahead. Tomorrow we are leaving on our FINAL Great Harvest training trip – this one to the Columbia, MD bakery to learn + observe with the awesome sister pair of owners! The week ends with a visit to my grandmother in Towson, along with mom, sister and Matt! After this trip we have no plans of traveling until the cows come home!

That sounds amazing right now! I could use some dough in my life :)

2 Stacey (The Home-Cooked Vegan) March 14, 2011 at 8:24 am

That looks delicious!
Oddly enough, I quit coffee in the middle of winter. Now I’m waiting for the day when I get tired of green tea, haha :)
Have a fun day!

3 Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete March 14, 2011 at 8:29 am

I’m the opposite of you — it is in the Spring/Summer when I start drinking more coffee. I’m not sure why?

I love the idea of a dough-y smoothie!

4 Heather March 14, 2011 at 8:30 am

What a delicious looking breakfast – and I love that there isn’t much cleanup!

I don’t drink coffee but haven’t had a cup of tea since Saturday – kicking the caffeine habit is not easy.

Sounds like you have a great trip coming up – it is so nice to be able to spend time with family.

5 Megan @ Loving the little things March 14, 2011 at 8:31 am

DUDE, that’s a brillant idea!! I’ve been eating overnight oats every single day for about a month now…I’m just so infatuated at the moment. But blending them up sounds like a fun change….if only I had a vitamixer.

6 Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin March 14, 2011 at 8:32 am

That’s such a cool idea for something different for breakfast.

And as for coffee – I tried to give it up but I’m just so much more pleasant to be around with coffee. :)

7 Elizabeth@The Sweet Life March 14, 2011 at 8:36 am

How creative–love the name!

8 Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat March 14, 2011 at 8:43 am

WOW! I love doughy oats and this smoothie sounds phenomenal! Bookmarking it right now!

9 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) March 14, 2011 at 8:46 am

Now that looks like my kind of smoothie! OATS! Have a great day Kath!

10 Christie {Nourishing Eats} March 14, 2011 at 8:47 am

For some reason, I have been thinking of having a smoothie all day today. My friend was telling me she likes avocado in her smoothies and it has been on my mind ever since.

11 Stacy @ Every Little Thing March 14, 2011 at 8:48 am

I never got into coffee, thank goodness, but I just gave up diet soda and the cravings are still coming! oh well, hopefully they stop soon :)

12 Joanne March 14, 2011 at 8:52 am

That is one interesting smoothie.
Good luck with your travels. Hope the MD weather is nice for you.:)

13 Lauren at Keep It Sweet March 14, 2011 at 8:53 am

Good luck with your week of travel! At least you get to see some family, too!

14 Krissy - Shiawase Life March 14, 2011 at 8:55 am

Safe travels!!

15 Chelsea March 14, 2011 at 8:57 am

Do you ever consider switching to iced coffee in the warmer months?

16 KathEats March 14, 2011 at 3:15 pm

Yeah, I used to drink “cool coffee” which was just hot poured over ice so it melted and wasn’t too cold. But coffee is so expensive I’m thinking of just switching to tea for the summer@

17 Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope March 14, 2011 at 8:57 am

What an awesome idea Kath! That almond butter swirl looks so good on top. I think anything smothie-like is definitely a sign that spring is ahead! :) I’m the same way with coffee – I love the warmth in the winter, but in the summer it’s just not my thing!

18 Toni March 14, 2011 at 9:03 am

I love coffee all the time. Summer or winter doesn’t matter to me!

19 J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) March 14, 2011 at 9:09 am

Yum, a doughy smoothie sounds very good!! And filling!

Have a fun trip!!!

20 Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg March 14, 2011 at 9:15 am

Yum– I love the flavor and taste of all things dough, so I’m sure I’d like this!

21 Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing March 14, 2011 at 9:17 am

Dare I say I think this is my favorite photo of your breakfast ever? I don’t know why exactly, I think it’s the placemat and nut butter meltiness :) I just love the colors!

22 lynn @ the actor's diet March 14, 2011 at 9:25 am

i thought from the title the dough wouldn’t work out. whew!

23 Melissa March 14, 2011 at 9:27 am

dough bowl? sign me up! looks delish and so simple–I’ve been looking for new breakfasts to try & this looks like it will fit the bill perfectly! :)

24 Estela @ Weekly Bite March 14, 2011 at 9:37 am

That smoothie sounds delicious!!

You’ll be so close to DC tomorrow :)

25 Lauren March 14, 2011 at 9:39 am

So I had no idea that Columbia MD had a great harvest so thanks for the heads up!

Also, I know you aren’t going to be in the area for long, but on one of your trips to the Baltimore area you need to check out Woodberry Kitchen….I think you’d love it.

Happy travels!

26 KathEats March 14, 2011 at 3:17 pm

Thanks for the rec!

27 Rachel March 14, 2011 at 6:39 pm

ahhh woodberry, my fave place. It’s my go-to restaurant for birthdays, and lately my boyfriend and I have become obsessed with their brunch- it’s soooo good.

28 Hillary March 14, 2011 at 9:40 am

No way! I live a mile away from the Columbia location! Will you guys be there the entire day?

29 KathEats March 14, 2011 at 3:24 pm

Yup! Wed + Thurs. If you email me I’ll put you on the “possibly get together list”

30 Katie March 14, 2011 at 9:42 am

Morning! I love this idea! Do u blend it at night or in the morning, I don’t know if I caught that right. it looks good!! I love the name of that granola, hail mary, lol, too cute!

Yay for your last training trip! The big day to open YOURS will be here soon!!!

31 KathEats March 14, 2011 at 3:36 pm

Blend in the AM!

32 Nicole @ Vegan in the House March 14, 2011 at 10:17 am

Very creative! Sounds delicious.

33 Juliene March 14, 2011 at 10:21 am

Oh we love the Columbia location. It’s worth the drive for us! Have fun while you’re here!

34 Amy March 14, 2011 at 10:22 am

What a fantastic idea! I’ll definitely try it. Looks delicious.

35 Maria March 14, 2011 at 10:23 am

This looks delish! I’ll have to make this sometime soon. As for the coffee, I usually make the switch from hot to iced. I’m not a big coffee drinker anyhow but I cannot drink hot beverages in the summer.

36 Ashley March 14, 2011 at 10:33 am

Ooooh I can just imagine the doughy goodness!! Love it!

37 kate@ahealthypassion March 14, 2011 at 10:41 am

this is the most amazing idea ever im definitely making it asap!

38 Amanda (Eating Up) March 14, 2011 at 10:43 am

I love that placemat! Such cute stripe colors!

39 Hope March 14, 2011 at 10:55 am

That looks incredible! Doughy oatmeal just sounds so good. I can’t wait until I get a blender so I can try making this! Yummy!

40 Lindsay March 14, 2011 at 11:03 am

Crazily enough I craved coffee for the first time in a month this morning! And oh, how I wish I’d had doughy oats with that cup o’ joe! I can’t wait to read the next post on your travels, our family is coming to us at the end of the month, and we can’t wait!! Have a wonderful trip!

41 Kate (What Kate is Cooking) March 14, 2011 at 11:11 am

Good idea! I had some overnight oats this morning. They would have been awesome all blended up!

42 Johanna B March 14, 2011 at 11:11 am

I finally took the plunge and bought some gluten-free oatmeal this weekend. Can’t wait to try out some of your combinations. I also bought millet and made a strawberry-vanilla poridge yesterday. It was good – VERY satisfying. I didn’t get hungry for a long time.

43 Kristen, Sweetly March 14, 2011 at 11:23 am

Oh, that looks wonderful! I have a confession, though. I was waiting and waiting to find out why your smoothie got messed up. It took me until the very end to realize what d’oh you were talking about. Hahaha.

44 Susan (Oliepants) March 14, 2011 at 11:32 am

A doughy smoothie sounds really refreshing to me right now – and filling! PS talk about easy on the prep and cook time! :)

45 Kiran March 14, 2011 at 11:51 am

Doughy or not, I love all your smoothies-oats-creations :) Have fun at Columbia!

46 Colleen March 14, 2011 at 12:23 pm

Oh wow – you’re coming to Columbia! I actually live in Columbia but have never been to GH b/c they don’t sell anything GF (I called at one point after becoming inspiried by all your beautiful bread), and I can’t eatgluten. Is it to stalker-esk to say that I’d so maybe come this week to buy a gift for my coworkers just so I can meet you? I hope you guys have a great time!!

47 KathEats March 14, 2011 at 3:37 pm

Definitely come in and ask for us!!!

48 Colleen (What's Baking in the Barbershop) March 14, 2011 at 12:35 pm

Love this idea! I gotta get me some dough 😀

49 Lauren @ChiGalLauren March 14, 2011 at 12:46 pm

You had me at doughy!

50 Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather March 14, 2011 at 12:51 pm

Mmmm that slight cinnamony doughy smoothie sound so good! Hope you have fun at the final training :)

51 Caitlyn (The Spoonful of Life) March 14, 2011 at 1:03 pm

That is a smoothie after my own heart!

52 Jen March 14, 2011 at 1:08 pm

Wow! You are truly brilliant!!!!

53 Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife March 14, 2011 at 1:13 pm

mmmm that looks really good- thanks for the great oat ideas :)

54 Mary @ Bites and Bliss March 14, 2011 at 1:20 pm

Mmmm, doughy shakes are the best!!

55 bitt March 14, 2011 at 1:34 pm

Do you worry about the blades of the blender when you keep it like that? I am paranoid even to let my soak for too long. Maybe I worry unnecessarily though.

56 KathEats March 14, 2011 at 3:39 pm

I couldn’t think of any reason it would be harmed..

57 Tiff March 14, 2011 at 1:36 pm

I’ve never been to the one in Columbia, but love the one in Annapolis. They had the best St. Patty’s Day sugar cookies. Maybe I will have to venture to the Columbia one to try to get a Kath & Matt spotting. Have a fun trip – the weather looks good for this week!

58 Cindy March 14, 2011 at 1:50 pm

Enjoy your travels!

59 Baking 'n' Books March 14, 2011 at 2:38 pm

Do they accomodate your traveling expenses?

Do you ever wake up and not want what you decided the night before? Or do you just eat it anyways?!

60 Emma (Namaste Everyday) March 14, 2011 at 3:08 pm

yum I’ll have to try that! I really need to get myself a blender in this college apartment!

61 Justeen @ Blissful Baking March 14, 2011 at 3:38 pm

A doughy smoothie sounds delicious! You always have the best breakfasts! :)

62 Namaste Gurl March 14, 2011 at 3:47 pm

Mmm, what a good idea!

63 Rofomom @REAL life in Rofo March 14, 2011 at 5:05 pm

Have fun on your trip! I can’t wait to see how the bakery comes out! and hear about the training. Your paint colors and design ideas got me really excited for you!

64 Emily March 14, 2011 at 5:16 pm

This is too funny! Like a few others that have commented, I live in Columbia as well and work very close to the Columbia location! I actually did a double take at my computer screen when I saw Columbia, MD (and not SC!).

65 KathEats March 14, 2011 at 6:42 pm

Are you free for lunch on Friday!? I’ll put you on the email list if that’s OK :)

66 Emily March 14, 2011 at 7:20 pm

I appreciate the invite but unfortunately I’m unavailable. Enjoy your time in Columbia :)

67 Chase March 14, 2011 at 7:15 pm

Aww I’m from Towson! Such a great place to grow up.

68 Hannah March 14, 2011 at 7:20 pm

I can’t help giggling because there’s no way my Vita-Mix container would fit in my half of the fridge (cause my fridge is full of chocolate… I wish I were joking, but I’m not), but I could always soak in a bowl and then transfer :)

69 Alaina March 14, 2011 at 8:30 pm

I can’t wait for the iced coffees in the spring and summer time!

70 Cara Craves... March 14, 2011 at 8:39 pm

The two best things combined together!
I love it!

71 Christin@purplebirdblog March 15, 2011 at 6:40 pm

The one time I blended oats into a smoothie I thought the texture was kind of off, but I think this is something I’d enjoy!

72 Katie (Sweet Tater) April 10, 2011 at 8:25 am

made this with frozen spinach added. love it!

73 Lauren April 14, 2011 at 12:38 pm

Hi! Do you think this or the SIAB would work with steel-cut oats instead of rolled oats?

74 KathEats April 14, 2011 at 12:38 pm

I think they might be too hard..

75 Emma April 20, 2011 at 7:51 pm

Yumm those look amazing. Do you put a frozen or fresh banana in the mix the night before?

76 KathEats April 20, 2011 at 8:08 pm

I put fresh but frozen would work

77 brianna May 5, 2011 at 10:05 pm

all of these look and sound so good.
Im trying one of them as soon as I get a chance!
Please stop by and say hi.

78 Meredith June 3, 2011 at 5:53 am

I just tried this for the first time this morning! So yummy! I halved the recipe, but still used a whole banana, and it was great! I topped it with walnuts, coconut, and fresh cherries… yummm.

79 Katie @ Peace Love and Oats August 11, 2011 at 10:46 am

So I tried to make this smoothie this morning (prepared it last night) and it came out really soupy! I’m not sure what I did wrong! Maybe it’s because I didn’t add Chia Seeds?

80 Aly August 31, 2011 at 5:27 am

Just had this and it was great! Added one handful of spinach and it was nummy :) Just a tip: if using a frozen banana add it to the blender in the morning. I didn’t do this today and I think it will create a nice cool morning treat + more thickness as well :) Thanks for the recipe!

81 ellf June 13, 2013 at 8:24 pm

Is it okay I blended before I put in fridge? Didnt read the part that I had to wait…

82 KathEats June 13, 2013 at 8:25 pm

I think that should be totally fine. Just stir and/or blend again in the morning to fluff it up

83 Katy September 5, 2013 at 3:39 am

Once you’ve made them how long would they keep in the fridge for? Is it possible to make a few days worth at a time? Thanks :)

84 KathEats September 5, 2013 at 5:26 am

Yes I think so
