Charlottesville, A to Z

March 11, 2011

I’ve been wanting to live this day for a long, long time.

DowntownBlog

Walking. Chic town. Great workout. Lunch out. Coffee (tea) shop. Haircut. Sunshine!

If only it were 85* it would have been the perfect day!

Here is me walking the 2ish miles to my gym this morning. Followed by a smashing Body Pump class! I made it through 2 medium and 1 small weights on each side with biceps. Definitely, definitely getting stronger. It was nearly impossible! I ended by working up a sweat on the stairmaster for 15 minutes (Body Pump doesn’t make me sweat and I wanted to be sweaty when I showered in the women’s locker room!)

After some jock time showering, I headed downtown for lunch!

Downtown2Blog

Ladies and Gentleman, may I present:

Charlottesville, A to Z

BLOG UPLOAD6

And the grande finale…

IMG_3737Blog-2

I had such fun with that little project!

I ended up at the Blue Ridge Country Store for lunch – which boasts a Whole Foods-like salad bar right downtown!

IMG_3735BlogIMG_3738Blog-2

The only problem is there is no seating, so I set on a mission to find some kind of table. I ended up scoring a nice picnic table in the Pavilion! In the summertime the city sets up lots of tables in there for businesspeople to enjoy lunch al fresco. Have I mentioned that the city also provides free wifi throughout the whole downtown? LOVE this place!

PavillionBlog

Lunch was cold. I needed the sun on me to feel warm!

IMG_3744Blog-2

My salad was great – lots of noodles, beans and veggies.

SaladzzBlog

Plus a coconut covered date for dessert!

IMG_3747Blog-2

I lugged my backpack all around town. Luckily my gym offers towel service (for $2 a use) that I splurged on today so I wouldn’t also have a wet towel. My bag contained my netbook, camera, gym clothes, coat, wallet, makeup, etc. It was quite heavy!

IMG_3739Blog-2

I had an hour to kill before my haircut, so I went to the Tea Bazaar for a big pot of peppermint tea and to get some work done. I spent an hour JUST dealing with emails!

IMG_3752Blog-2

Then it was haircut time! I went to Salad Salon Druknya downtown. Loved working with Shannon!

FIVE INCHES GONE!!!!!!!!!

IMG_3774Blog-2

I prefer my hair long, but it was getting IMPOSSIBLE to control!!! Shampooing was hard. Running without forming a rat’s nest was hard. Life was hard. So I said goodbye. See you next year long hair.

IMG_3776Blog-2IMG_3777Blog-2IMG_3778Blog

I do like the new do a lot!

So does Tiger.

IMG_3773Blog

But he does not like to snuggle!

TigeriswigglyBlog

[Now I am covered in human and cat hair]

Sorry Tiger, if you don’t want to snuggle you can’t come inside!

Great haircut! Your photo collage makes me want to wander around Mass St in Lawrence, KS (home of KU – go Jayhawks!) and take photos of the great shops you can find there. I could do with some Mad Greek grub this weekend.

Lovely hair, Kath. I know this has been mentioned somewhere before, but is Matt opposed to meds to address the cat allergy? Every time my boyfriend and I talk about marriage, I cringe at the cat discussion. He’s allergic, too, and it makes me so sad!

Reply

10 KathEats March 11, 2011 at 5:30 pm

Yeah, we don’t want to deal with meds

Reply

11 Erin March 11, 2011 at 5:54 pm

The longer you’re around them, the more you build up a tolerance. I’m allergic to cats and I have 2 indoor ones! When I was in college and lived away from them I would come home on the weekends and sneeze the whole time. Now they don’t bother me as long as I don’t rub on them and then rub my face.

Reply

12 KathEats March 11, 2011 at 6:09 pm

Not with Matt! The more he’s around them the worse it gets. I’ve never seen anyone as allergic as he is

A few years ago, I went so short my stylist even needed to shave the back of my head! Totally fun cut and I got a TON of complements from total strangers. Im craving the cut again!!

Past the pavilion, across the street and over a bridge or overpass is Spudnuts. Back in the day, it was a franchise opportunity but I think headquarters has long since closed down and operators are wholly independent. I’m not one to get excited about doughnuts, but Spudnuts’ are amazing. Sometimes food at its finest. The coffee is terrible, though.

Reply

Ooh yes, Kath, please say you’ve had Spudnuts!

Reply

29 KathEats March 11, 2011 at 5:42 pm

I haven’t had them before! I’m just not a big donut person. Give me buttercream frosting anyday, but bagels and donuts are just not something I oogle over! If you put one in my mouth though, I’d happily try it :)

I don’t know – it takes a lot to get me to sweat!! I need my heart rate above 130 or so to sweat, and BP is much more lifting than cardio for me.

Reply

114 Mary Frances March 12, 2011 at 1:41 am

I sweat in BP, but have a good amount of weight on there. I’ll bet you could get your heart rate higher with more weight and heavier breathing. Our BP also has some fast tempo. Does the one you go to use music and push through long fast sets? Maybe different instructors do BP differenty. You might be able to catch Pam’s 6 a.m. great class on Thursday; or others on either Friday 10:30 or Saturday 11:30 (I miss those due to work schedule, but catch Pam’s other class on the weekend)–let me know if you are interested.

My sister and I are doing a “sisters weekend” in May. She’s in NJ, I’m in NC, so we split the difference with VA. Last year we went to Richmond & loved the Carytown area. This year we decided on Charlottesville! I’ve been reading your blog for a few years & told her that I’ll go back through your posts to get ideas of some places to eat/drink/shop. I’m excited! Any places we shouldn’t miss?

Check my Cville page!! It’s got all the places not to miss. And send me an email – we might be around to play tourguide!

Love your hair cut! That is my fav length on you…very chic!

Usually by the 30 min mark in BP ive worked up a pretty good sweat, but its not the same kind of red faced fluster I get with cardio!

That does sound like the perfect day! I love just walking around downtown in nice weather. I can’t wait until the weather clears up here so that I can do that again.

Love the haircut too! :)

Oh, and I love your haircut! I just got my hair cut too! I donated 12 inches to Wigs for Kids, it is so nice to have it shorter, it drys so much faster! :)

Love the new do! Really cute. :)

Your town looks so pretty. I’m getting tired of the hectic nature of the NYC area.
But, I shouldn’t complain today considering the people of Japan are dealing with the catastrophic effects of the earthquake. Many prayers go out to them.

Awww! I loved the A-Z idea! What a great way to explore a town, and it looked like truly the perfect day. There is also something so great to getting your hair cut, makes me feel fresher, lil more pep in my step! Cute cut too, I think saying goodbye to 5 in. was just right!

Love your new haircut! I love my hair long too but it just feels so free when it’s shorter! Also, I wanted to say I love your pics of downtown, it just sparked an idea of taking a road trip at some point this year and stopping there. I love small towns and have traveled all over europe but never explored much of the states, not even the east coast and I live in jersey lol. Would love to see more pics etc of the shops and things you do, i’m jotting it all down for future ideas, so thanks! When do those music festivals start that you go to?
Anyways, love your blog, and especially love your photography!

Your hair looks GORGEOUS! I love my hair long but every now & then, it’s nice to have it short, it’s amazing how much easier it is to work with.

The pictures of Charlottesville, really just further cements to me how much I would love to visit the area. I love that it seems like it has such a small town vibe, yet has so many things to keep you busy!

Love your new haircut!! It looks like it will be manageable. I also love the pics of C’Ville. It looks so beautiful there. Please continue to photograph the beauty of where you live and share it with us. It must be so much fun to be able to walk all around your town without having to use your car. That is ideal and it is the dream for a lot of us!

Tiger is so cute!! :)

I don’t think they offer pay-as-you-go but on First Fridays you can bring a friend, so if you ever want to try a class, let me know!

I really love your hair! I’m currently growing mine out (had it cut very short about 18 months ago and getting sick of not having it tied up) and I can’t wait until it gets to your length. It’s going to take me a while but it’ll be worth the wait!
