All Grown Up

February 5, 2011

A trip back in time: Saturday morning cartoons.

Except at this point in time, cartoon means Michael Scott and Conan!

And a grown up breakfast:

Smoothie in a bowl

For TWO smoothies:

  • 1 banana
  • 1.5 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup Vega Choc-a-lot
  • 1/2 cup raw oats
  • 1/2 cup frozen berries
  • 2 giant handfuls spinach

Toppings: Ancient Grains granola and coconut

Indeed, we have the same pajama pants! They are both menโ€™s that I found on sale at a GAP outlet many years ago!

Todayโ€™s plans include yoga, lounging and an adult dinner party. [Like, real adults!]

That sounds just great. Don’t you love weekend mornings that are lounge-y and relaxed? It seems the weeks are so busy, it’s a good time to just hang and enjoy. Love the pants!!

2 Stacy @ Every Little Thing February 5, 2011 at 9:56 am

Love the spoon slots on that mug! And the more I become an adult, the more I like adult dinner parties :)

3 Meg February 5, 2011 at 9:57 am

I LOVE early morning cartoons! I remember watching Scooby Doo as I would get ready for grade school ๐Ÿ˜€

LOVING your slippies and pj’s :)

4 Lauren at KeepItSweet February 5, 2011 at 9:59 am

Sounds like a wonderful relaxing Saturday morning, enjoy!

5 Ann @ Day by Day February 5, 2011 at 10:02 am

Such a perfect way to start off a Saturday! Haha before I finished reading the post, I was thinking that everyone’s going to comment on the matching PJ pants! Cute! I buy men’s pajama pants sometimes just cause I think they’re more comfortable!

6 Nicole @ yuppie yogini February 5, 2011 at 10:02 am

Matching PJs…very cute! :)

7 Allison @ Can't Wait for Breakfast February 5, 2011 at 10:03 am

Haha! I just watched The Office while eating my oatmeal this morning! Enjoy your day!

8 Stacey (The Home-Cooked Vegan) February 5, 2011 at 10:03 am

Lol, I’ve always been attracted to the softness of mens pajama pants, but I didn’t want anyone to think I was weird (like my boyfriend)! I never buy them, but I always end up wearing his around the house, I’m glad someone else does this!
Have a great Saturday, Kath ๐Ÿ˜€

9 Camille February 5, 2011 at 10:05 am

I love men’s PJ pants. I swear, guys clothes are so much comfier than womens’!

10 Estela @ Weekly Bite February 5, 2011 at 10:06 am

I miss the gold old fashioned cartoons :)

Have a great Saturday :)

11 Sophie February 5, 2011 at 10:10 am

Love a lazy Saturday morning. Can’t say I had a smoothie this morning because I’m FREEZING so warmed up with some OIAJ!

12 Eating Bird Food February 5, 2011 at 10:11 am

I love that you two have the same PJ pants. Too cute!

13 Kate February 5, 2011 at 10:12 am

Ahh, we DVR the same stuff! I also will be catching up on some Conan this morning :) You guys don’t just have the same PJ pants… you’re also wearing similar style slippers and socks. Too funny :p

14 Amanda (The Nutritionist Reviews) February 5, 2011 at 10:12 am

I love this post! How cute that you both have the same PJs : )

15 Marisa @ Loser for Life February 5, 2011 at 10:26 am

19 Simply Life February 5, 2011 at 10:49 am

looks like a great way to start the weekend!

20 Anne @ Baking Me February 5, 2011 at 11:04 am

My husband and I also have matching pajama pants! We give each other pajamas for Christmas every year and a few years ago he waited until the last minute so all that was left at J.Crew (where he and I both got the pajamas) were men’s so we ended up with the same pants :)

Have a great weekend!

21 claire February 5, 2011 at 11:07 am

So cute! Matching P.J.’S :)

22 Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn February 5, 2011 at 11:09 am

Love me some Conan! I absolutely love that your bowl has a spoon rest, that would make my life ten times easier since my spoon always falls in my bowl! Happy Saturday morning cartoon watching, Kath:)

23 Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete February 5, 2011 at 11:15 am

I love the matching PJs but I really love your slippers! They look so warm and cozy.

Enjoy your day!

24 Liz @ Tip Top Shape February 5, 2011 at 11:24 am

Your guy’s’ semi-matching slippers are pretty much the cutest thing ever. And Michael Scott (meaning Jim Halpart too!!!) and Conan?? Sounds like the perfect morning!

25 Meagan February 5, 2011 at 11:25 am

I love the feet pictures :) You both are adorable!!

26 Christine (The Raw Project) February 5, 2011 at 11:32 am

Cute post, the smoothie in a bowl looks wonderful and the pajama pants are adorable!

27 Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine February 5, 2011 at 11:33 am

Haha I love the matching PJs. When I was a kid my brother and I would race to wake up first and pick the cartoons for the morning!

28 stacey-healthylife February 5, 2011 at 11:44 am

That’s funny your pajamas’s, socks, and slipper’s are alike or a least very similar.

29 Jess (Sweet Potato) February 5, 2011 at 11:44 am

I loved Saturday morning cartoons! Except they certainly contributed to my chubby youth as I would sit and watch cartoons for 4-5 hours every saturday morning. Typically after eating pancakes like I did every morning until I was about 16…

30 Katie February 5, 2011 at 11:48 am

Love the bowl! I want one! Is that the one you said they dont sell anymore though ; p

Have a great day Kath ! xo

31 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin February 5, 2011 at 11:52 am

I used to get up at 6 am on Saturdays to watch cartoons. It drove my parents crazy!

32 Krystina February 5, 2011 at 11:54 am

Your matching pj’s are adorable.

33 sarah February 5, 2011 at 11:56 am

Thanks to your Neat Home series, I organized my kitchen drawers and put all of those messy cereal boxes on top of my fridge in media boxes on top of my fridge. It looks so much neater. Thanks for the inspiration!

35 lynn @ the actor's diet February 5, 2011 at 11:56 am

i miss saturday morning cartoons so much. if someone wised up they’d make a channel for all of us nostalgic adults.

36 MonsteRawr February 5, 2011 at 12:15 pm

I tired to get my husband to wear matching pajamas, but he doesn’t look nearly as good in purple silk as I do…

37 Kathleen February 5, 2011 at 12:18 pm

That sounds SO lovely! :) LOVE the pajama pants! :)

38 sarah February 5, 2011 at 12:21 pm

@lynn- there is a cable channel called Boomerang that has a lot of old cartoons.

39 Kate (What Kate is Cooking) February 5, 2011 at 12:29 pm

Haha, I love the matching pajamas!

40 Alaina February 5, 2011 at 12:33 pm

I love Conan. But a part of me still likes watching Fairly Oddparents in the morning too. :-)

41 [email protected] February 5, 2011 at 12:37 pm

I have had that granola (from Costco right?). Wasn’t my favorite. After making homemade granola with coconut, coconut butter, and tons of nuts, I am pretty much ruined for any other granola/cereal. I keep my (homemade) granola in the fridge to keep it fresh and crunchy.

42 Emily @ Savory and Savage February 5, 2011 at 12:46 pm

Lazy Saturday mornings are the best! And men’s cotton pajamas are for some reason – so much softer than women’s – especially after a bunch of washings. :-)

43 Lauren February 5, 2011 at 12:51 pm

The adult weekend continues. Enjoy!

44 Justeen @ Blissful Baking February 5, 2011 at 1:04 pm

love the matching pjs! you guys are adorable :)

45 Tracy @ Commit To Fit February 5, 2011 at 1:05 pm

Lounging is a fantastic word for today :)

46 Natalia - a side of simple February 5, 2011 at 1:07 pm

Saturday morning cartoons, oh the memories! My siblings and I would always get up early because we had to complete a chore before we were allowed to go to my grandma’s and watch (we don’t have tv).

Michael Scott is a pretty good alternative, and might I add a perfect contribution to an “adult” weekend? :)

47 Caitlyn (A Spoonful of Life) February 5, 2011 at 1:12 pm

Lazy mornings are the best! And I think I have those very same slippers, but in green! They are incredibly warm and comfy!!

48 Jessica February 5, 2011 at 1:39 pm

Steel cut oats in the rice cooker with brown sugar and banana this morning for me!

We’ve got some cinnamon rolls from our local GH for tomorrow :)
I love how each one is so local! Ours sells Michigan map oven mitts-works out nicely for the mitten state ๐Ÿ˜€

49 Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) February 5, 2011 at 2:05 pm

Saturday mornings have so many memories for me. And I love eating breakfast in front of the tv in my pajamas. I don’t do it often enough. ๐Ÿ˜€

Have fun today! ๐Ÿ˜€

50 Allison @ Happy Tales February 5, 2011 at 2:06 pm

Matching PJ pants… I am totally jealous. I think Ryan would kill me if I were to buy us matching pj pants. I think I now have a new mission. (muuahaha)

51 Annette February 5, 2011 at 2:08 pm

I love smoothies in a bowl also! Why mix in the oats into the smoothie instead of scatter it on top? Just wondering!

52 KathEats February 5, 2011 at 2:14 pm

Because they make the smoothie doughier!

53 chelsey @ clean eating chelsey February 5, 2011 at 2:08 pm

I love that you guys have matching pajamas. It kind of makes me love you even more.

54 Allie February 5, 2011 at 2:20 pm

Cute matching pj’s ;p haha! Breakfast looks delicious.. :) Have a great Saturday!

55 [email protected] February 5, 2011 at 2:48 pm

Hehe are your slippers from Target?! I think I have the same one except I used to wear it as outside-shoes.

56 cameo February 5, 2011 at 3:06 pm

I love yoga on Sundays! It’s the best.

57 Kara February 5, 2011 at 3:08 pm

Your day sounds great. I’m 27 and I’ve still never been to (or hosted) a dinner party. Does that mean I’m not an adult yet? I hope so :)

58 Amanda (Eating Up) February 5, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Perfect way to start a Saturday!

59 Amy at TheSceneFromMe February 5, 2011 at 3:56 pm

Gotta love days that you can lounge around in comfy slippers like yours! Snow day here and I’m cozy in the kitchen making homemade treats for our poker party tonight!

60 Melomeals: Vegan for $3.33 a Day February 5, 2011 at 4:13 pm

Green smoothie in a bowl is brilliant

61 Mary @ Bites and Bliss February 5, 2011 at 4:25 pm

62 christina cadden February 5, 2011 at 4:59 pm

Love that you both have the same pajamas! Super cute ๐Ÿ˜‰

64 Maria February 5, 2011 at 6:00 pm

I love the site, but I was puzzled with the post that featured Vega. I followed the link, and was suspicious when I saw that they did not list the ingredients, but made liberal use of the word natural, which as you know, means nothing in terms of nutrition. Cyanide is natural.

Below is a link to a review that seemed to make sense:

Here is part of the review: “Vega is designed differently than most green drinks. It provides a larger than usual amount of protein, which makes it a cross between a protein drink and a green drink. The protein comes from hemp and green pea mostly, but also contains some rice and flax. The last two would be fillers to most people, but they do provide some protein. These ingredients give the mixture a slightly gritty texture, but you can easily overcome that by mixing with a โ€œthickโ€ fruit juice or nectar…… Maca is one of the ingredients I consider to be โ€œaverageโ€ in terms of benefits-to-bulk ratio (see my list of best, average and worst ingredients here)…. At approximately $4.35 per serving, the formula is a bit on the high side in terms of cost-benefit. The cost per ounce is low at $2.14, but the suggested serving size is larger than normal at over 2 ounces (61g). Flavored and sweetened with Stevia, the taste is something you have to try for yourself.

My question: How can you say this is real food? It sounds like a protein drink just like any other, lots of fillers and inexpensive ingredients which do raise the fiber and protein, but are not quality ingredients.

65 KathEats February 5, 2011 at 6:07 pm

I never claimed that Vega was 100% whole, real food. But it passes my ingredient list requirements. And it’s also not something I rely on for nutrition – I use it mostly for taste.

66 Maria February 6, 2011 at 11:23 am

Thanks for the reply. I hope other readers are not confused by the inclusion of this product on your site.

I would use 100% cocoa powder, less expensive and no fillers. Perhaps this would not give exactly the flavor you are looking for, but it seems heathier to me.

Full Disclosure: I have no financial interest in any products, but I have become concerned about how easy it is to misunderstand endorsements. This site seemed so genuine that I wanted clarification. Thank you for doing so.

67 [email protected] February 5, 2011 at 6:02 pm

My mind is always in the gutter, and adult dinner party sounds dirty to me. Yes, I’m 12. *giggle*

68 J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) February 5, 2011 at 6:30 pm

I’ve never had a SIAB! It’s on my to-try list for ages :) They always look yummy, though!
