All Grown Up

A trip back in time: Saturday morning cartoons.

BLOG-0299

Except at this point in time, cartoon means Michael Scott and Conan!

And a grown up breakfast:

BLOG-0276

Smoothie in a bowl

BLOG-0281

For TWO smoothies:

  • 1 banana
  • 1.5 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup Vega Choc-a-lot
  • 1/2 cup raw oats
  • 1/2 cup frozen berries
  • 2 giant handfuls spinach

Toppings: Ancient Grains granola and coconut

BLOG-0277

Indeed, we have the same pajama pants! They are both men’s that I found on sale at a GAP outlet many years ago!

BLOG-0296

Today’s plans include yoga, lounging and an adult dinner party. [Like, real adults!]

I have had that granola (from Costco right?). Wasn’t my favorite. After making homemade granola with coconut, coconut butter, and tons of nuts, I am pretty much ruined for any other granola/cereal. I keep my (homemade) granola in the fridge to keep it fresh and crunchy.

Saturday morning cartoons, oh the memories! My siblings and I would always get up early because we had to complete a chore before we were allowed to go to my grandma’s and watch (we don’t have tv).

Michael Scott is a pretty good alternative, and might I add a perfect contribution to an “adult” weekend? 🙂

I love the site, but I was puzzled with the post that featured Vega. I followed the link, and was suspicious when I saw that they did not list the ingredients, but made liberal use of the word natural, which as you know, means nothing in terms of nutrition. Cyanide is natural.

Below is a link to a review that seemed to make sense:

    http://www.greendrinkreviews.com/wp/2010/01/10/review-vega-health-optimizer/

Here is part of the review: “Vega is designed differently than most green drinks. It provides a larger than usual amount of protein, which makes it a cross between a protein drink and a green drink. The protein comes from hemp and green pea mostly, but also contains some rice and flax. The last two would be fillers to most people, but they do provide some protein. These ingredients give the mixture a slightly gritty texture, but you can easily overcome that by mixing with a “thick” fruit juice or nectar…… Maca is one of the ingredients I consider to be “average” in terms of benefits-to-bulk ratio (see my list of best, average and worst ingredients here)…. At approximately $4.35 per serving, the formula is a bit on the high side in terms of cost-benefit. The cost per ounce is low at $2.14, but the suggested serving size is larger than normal at over 2 ounces (61g). Flavored and sweetened with Stevia, the taste is something you have to try for yourself.

My question: How can you say this is real food? It sounds like a protein drink just like any other, lots of fillers and inexpensive ingredients which do raise the fiber and protein, but are not quality ingredients.

      February 5, 2011 at 6:07 pm

I never claimed that Vega was 100% whole, real food. But it passes my ingredient list requirements. And it’s also not something I rely on for nutrition – I use it mostly for taste.

Thanks for the reply. I hope other readers are not confused by the inclusion of this product on your site.

I would use 100% cocoa powder, less expensive and no fillers. Perhaps this would not give exactly the flavor you are looking for, but it seems heathier to me.

Full Disclosure: I have no financial interest in any products, but I have become concerned about how easy it is to misunderstand endorsements. This site seemed so genuine that I wanted clarification. Thank you for doing so.
