A Green Start

November 18, 2010

Excited about the dayyyyy!! I don’t know if it was starting the day with greens or the fact that I sent in the first draft of my article last night (or the sunshine!) but I am excited. [Speaking of green, you need to listen to this Brendan James song: Green.]

Green smoothie rockin it!

The Mix

The key for winter smoothies is nothing comes from the freezer! This was just cooler than room temp (because the milk was the only cold item) so it was totally tolerable on a cool morning.

Lagunitas represent!

Have you seen the new Conan?

Matt and I are huge fans, and I’m glad he is back! I Tweet him all the time, but I’ve yet to receive a response (I hear he doesn’t Tweet back?!) Wouldn’t it be fun if he invited me to take the saltine challenge with him!? The new TBS show is on behind me as I’m blogging (was recorded last night), and it’s the same as it used to be, which makes me happy.

And with that, onward!

I loved looking at your wedding pics on Brides Up North today :)

2 Jessica @ How Sweet It Is November 18, 2010 at 9:12 am

I actually like when smoothies aren’t super cold often because I’m not a fan of foods at extreme temperatures. They hurt my teeth!

3 Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat November 18, 2010 at 9:16 am

I also had a green smoothie this morning but I used frozen spinach and I was definitely shivering after!! It was just wayyy too good to not finish. Have a great day!

4 Estela @ Weekly Bite November 18, 2010 at 9:21 am

I heart Conan!! I DVR’rd his show last night :)

Your smoothie presentation is gorgeous :)

5 Camille November 18, 2010 at 9:21 am

You should start a campaign for Conan to challenge you to the Saltine Challenge! Heck, that’s how Betty White got to host SNL!

6 Lauren November 18, 2010 at 9:25 am

I always get soo confused when you show Brendan James, because he reminds me so much of an actor, but I could never put my finger on. Now I’ve finally got it! Bryan Greenberg:

Do you see it?!?!

7 Kath November 18, 2010 at 9:55 am

I see a bit of a resemblance :)

8 Sara November 18, 2010 at 1:01 pm

he’s actually a musician too! :)

9 Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun November 18, 2010 at 9:25 am

I still eat cold smoothies in winter but have a hot cup of coffee alongside them. I guess kind of like how I will still eat soups and chili in the summer. LOL

10 Amanda November 18, 2010 at 9:26 am

Brendan James is amazing, glad to hear someone else listens to him. Have you heard his Hero’s Song?

Absolutely amazing!! Have a good day!

11 Kath November 18, 2010 at 9:55 am

12 Honey B. November 18, 2010 at 9:26 am

Honestly, having greens in the AM gives me SO much more energy!

13 Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) November 18, 2010 at 9:28 am

Yay, for finishing up something. I feel like I am all over the place lately! I do love me some Conan, I need to record that show, but keep forgetting.

14 grocery goddess jen November 18, 2010 at 9:31 am

I’m glad Conan’s back, too, not that I ever stay up to watch it :) I always crack up when I see something about “Team Coco” because my cat’s name is Coconut, and we call her “Coco” for short. If only she were hosting a late night TV show and making millions…

15 Jessa November 18, 2010 at 9:38 am

Hey Kath!
More a comment on your previous post about your husband’s brewing basement….I saw last night on TV an ad for a new TV show on the discovery channel called Brewing Masters, where the guy goes all around the world to add special ingredients to make new beer flavors. Made me think of you guys!

16 Kath November 18, 2010 at 9:55 am

We’re excited about it!

17 Meg November 18, 2010 at 9:39 am

Mmm nothing like starting a good Thursday with a bowl of nutritious greens 😀

Enjoy your day, Kath!

18 Michele @ Healthy Cultivations November 18, 2010 at 9:40 am

I really like starting my mornings with a green monster. It seems to help me feel good throughout the morning both physically and mentally to know that I’ve gotten some greens in already.

19 rebecca lustig November 18, 2010 at 9:49 am

that green is a FABULOUS color green. just sayin!!

my dad saw conon obrien at a restaurant in new york city that he often goes to. apparently, celebs do too!

its called shun lee. and it’s DELICIOUS (incase you were wondering)

20 Kath November 18, 2010 at 9:55 am

Oh fun!! I would love to meet him!

21 Rachel November 18, 2010 at 9:53 am

What a beautiful color green (my favorite color)! Where do you get all your cool jars?

22 Kath November 18, 2010 at 9:56 am

At Lagunitas – I linked the post

23 Alaina November 18, 2010 at 9:56 am

I’m so glad Conan is back. And I love that his show is just like the one on his Late Night. He’s hilarious :-)

24 Jil @ Big City, Lil' Kitchen November 18, 2010 at 9:59 am

Team CoCo!

25 Natalia - a side of simple November 18, 2010 at 10:06 am

I’m such a fan of Conan but I haven’t seen his new show yet. I better get on that!

26 Caitlyn (A Spoonful of Life) November 18, 2010 at 10:07 am

I have not stopped listening to Brendan James since you posted his song “The Fall” on your blog. There’s been may a day where I have played that song on repeat! Again…and again!

Your green smoothie looks good!

27 Katie @ Healthy Heddleston November 18, 2010 at 10:24 am

TEAM COCO for sure!!!

28 Carrie Beth November 18, 2010 at 10:26 am

thanks for the winterized smoothie suggestion! it’s tooooo cooooold for a frigid breakfast these days :)

29 Halley (Blunder Construction) November 18, 2010 at 10:34 am

Conan last night was hysterical w/ Russell Brand! I’m so glad he’s back on, our generation needs him! Go coco!

30 Jillian@ Reshape Your Life November 18, 2010 at 10:43 am

I’ve never watched Conan, with all of this talk about it (and the fact that I have a dvr nowI might have to check it out.

I never thought of having a green smoothie without ice or frozen things… Great idea!

31 Heather (Heather's Dish) November 18, 2010 at 10:44 am

i need to go on a green monster breakfast kick like none other…it’s been TOO long!

32 [email protected] November 18, 2010 at 10:45 am

I loooooove Conan but we don’t have cable. I’ll have to see if the episodes are available online!

33 Jessica November 18, 2010 at 10:52 am

Have you ever gotten granola from the Mix My Granola? I have been meaning to try it since I can never get the exact mix I want from the grocery stores.

34 Kath November 18, 2010 at 2:55 pm

Yeah!! If you search KERF for it you’ll find it. It’s great stuff!

35 Dee November 18, 2010 at 11:05 am

I love Conan so much. He is definitely one of a kind!

36 Ashley @ Nourishing the Soul November 18, 2010 at 11:11 am

If you can believe this, I’ve never seen Conan. I know, travesty…

37 [email protected] November 18, 2010 at 11:24 am

I havent had a green monster in forever….I’ll be making those next week

38 Brittney November 18, 2010 at 11:30 am

Green is one of my favorite Brendan James songs :) I’m so glad we went to see him! That was a fun night :)

39 Jamie @ Food in Real Life November 18, 2010 at 11:38 am

What a pretty green smoothie. I was wondering about drinking smoothies in the cold weather just as you explained how you do it. Are you a mind reader? :) Have a great day!

40 emily November 18, 2010 at 12:16 pm

Last time I was in Boston I had a Conan spotting whilst walking by a cafe. We didn’t want to bother him, but my guy friend looked so excited that Conan actually noticed us and laughed! Although then we went to the cafe for brunch the next day (and requested the same table he was at) and the food sort of sucked.. 😉

41 Veggies, Cake and Cocktails November 18, 2010 at 12:25 pm

I really like the new Conan show. I especially like that the guests are not “preped” before hand so you never know what’s going to happen!

42 Kelly November 18, 2010 at 12:25 pm

I like to stick to the frozen fruits even in the winter. My trick is that I only drink/eat smoothies after an early morning workout. I’m so sweaty, I gladly welcome some cold green refreshment. :)

43 lynn (The Actors Diet) November 18, 2010 at 12:39 pm

i used to babysit for andy, conan’s sidekick! love them both.

44 Kath November 18, 2010 at 2:56 pm

For a moment I thought you meant you babysat Andy himself!! I was thinking there is no way you are that old…or he is that young… confusion…then ah-ha! VERY COOL!

45 Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) November 18, 2010 at 1:07 pm

I haven’t had a green smoothie in weeks… Those pictures have me craving one now! Hard to want one this time of year as the weather turns cooler, but after reading Kelly’s comment I agree… Would probably be better after a workout than first thing for breakfast. All I want are warm things ;P

46 Katie (The Boston Marathoner) November 18, 2010 at 1:30 pm

This looks fabulous- I just got my wisdom teeth yanked a week ago and I’m beyond tired of mashed potatoes and pudding. This will be dinner tonight!

47 Mads November 18, 2010 at 1:40 pm

Oh man, I’m lovin Conan. I always have and I suppose I will until he retires.
Also, that green monster jar thing looks like I need a taste!

48 Maddie (Healthy Maddie) November 18, 2010 at 2:10 pm

Great idea for not using frozen fruits in green smoothies! I love having green smoothies durin the winer but am always freezing after drinking them.

49 jenna November 18, 2010 at 2:35 pm

remember when we drank green smoothies on my floor?

50 Kath November 18, 2010 at 2:56 pm

Yes, fond memories. I miss that apt!

51 Kiran November 18, 2010 at 3:43 pm

I love green smoothies. So fresh, delicious and amazing in any season. Conan rocks!

52 Samantha Bellinger November 18, 2010 at 4:57 pm

That grapefruit looks amazing! You really had that for 3 weeks and it still looks like juicy/delicious?!? What is your secret?

53 Kath November 18, 2010 at 6:50 pm

I think it was just a good one from the start! I pick ones that are heavy and feel like they have thin skin. I think thin skin is key..

54 shorty November 18, 2010 at 4:59 pm

SO my 14yr old and myself tried the saltine challenge. I have to say it was MUCH harder than I thought. I was only able to finish four but my son finished with 14 seconds to spare!!!!!!!!!! He put all 6 in his mouth at one time:) Goes to show you teenagers don’t taste the food they eat, they just bite and swallow!hehe I am going to have to have my hubs try it when he gets home;)

55 Kath November 18, 2010 at 6:51 pm

WOW. Need to see the video of that one!!

56 Christena November 18, 2010 at 6:36 pm

Funny — today is a Brendan James day for me! I listened to Green on my way too and from work and when I got home, his CD (that I ordered) was waiting in my mailbox! Then I read this post! I sound like a Brendan James creeper, but seriously Green is one of my favorite songs EVER!

57 Errign November 18, 2010 at 6:44 pm

Russell Brand on Conan last night was SO funny!

58 Lindsay November 18, 2010 at 7:58 pm

I thought you said you needed my love to keep you warm?
I say, I say, I got my BANDAGES to keep me warm!

Oh please, please tell me your title references that old cartoon with the big rooster! Maybe? Anyone?

59 Kath November 18, 2010 at 8:07 pm

I was listening to the Xmas song when I typed this!

60 Hannah November 18, 2010 at 8:17 pm

I love how vibrantly green that is! I need to get a blender soon!!

61 Rachelle November 18, 2010 at 8:40 pm

How does the green smoothie taste? I like spinach on a salad, but I am weary in a smoothie. Does it taste dirt and green like?
OMG, SO JEALOUS of that pumpkin spice balsamic!!!

62 Kath November 18, 2010 at 10:53 pm

Like banana!

63 jenna December 3, 2010 at 6:07 pm
