Wouldn’t Be Summer Without…

My lunch finally escaped my camera!

LunchBlog-2

And look who escaped their car to pay us a surprise visit!!! I knew there was a chance they’d stop by the bakery on their way home from their hike trip, but I had totally forgot until I saw my dad step out of the car. What a pleasant surprise! I only wish they could have stayed for dinner.

IMG_4571-2Blog

Afternoon snack was a Kombucha that Matt brought me to the bakery one day when he spontaneously stopped into Whole Foods. What a sweetheart.

IMG_4577-2Blog

Something else I’ve been meaning to share with you all:

IMG_4573-2Blog

KERF reader Lisa makes these gorgeous notepads by hand with adorable foodie designs on the front. Each notebook is hand-stamped with custom-made foodie stamps and the papers are 100% recycled! I absolutely love these and use them at the bakery everyday:

IMG_4574-2Blog

You can purchase them at Lisa’s Esty Store or buy a Heirloom + Local bundle through OpenSky.

IMG_4572-2Blog

After a hard day’s work (Matt took the day off!) I arrived home on my bike to our weekly family slider feast. Wouldn’t be summer without burgers, and we’ve decided to maximize or time with them! Karen and Matt had got a great start on them!

IMG_4594-2Blog

The three of us are really loving sliders for dinner! The little buns from GH are the perfect size for a 2-3 ounce burger.

GrillableBlog

The meat tonight was a sample from Organic Prairie by Organic Valley. I spoke a bit about this new humane brand in this post. The meat was neatly vacuum packed for easy freezing and thawing – thumbs up for convenience. I could go years without eating chicken or turkey or pork and be fine, but I really do love the taste of beef. I crave it sometimes. I wonder if it has anything to do with the iron or nutrients in red meat?

IMG_4593-2Blog

Our sliders were topped with K+M (hey – Kath + Matt!!), tomato, pickle, basil. It was outstanding!

IMG_4592-2Blog

Apparently this fly thought so too. GET OFF MY DINNER!

IMG_4595-2Blog

On the side: corn + zucchini

IMG_4599-2Blog

And a tomato, cucumber and goat feta salad tossed with balsamic and olive oil

IMG_4598-2BlogIMG_4601-2Blog

After dinner I cut into this bad boy:

IMG_4603-2Blog

Wouldn’t be summer without it..

IMG_4604-2Blog

Going to catch the first half of SYTYCD.

Wouldn’t be summer without it!

Oh Kath, your dinner looks delish as always! Glad your mom and dad were able to stop by on their way home. I hope they are able to pick the bears up from their exclusive camp when they get home :). I am super excited because Mr. UPS finally brought my package from OpenSky! I am enjoying C’ville Clusters as I type! I recall a post about the labels being rubbed off because of the heat but I didn’t pay to much attention as our weather has been unseasonably cool. Is there somewhere I could look for the directions on how to cook both the oatmeal and pancake mixes?

I think the iron in beef makes people crave it. I was a vegetarian for a year and a half (mostly just an experiment) but when I got pregnant, I craved red meat, and I was sure my body was seeking more iron. I also crave it more when I’m running higher mileage.

The same thing happened to me when I was pregnant. Also after being vegetarian/vegan for 7 years- I never ate much steak before that, but suddenly it was all I wanted to eat for a lonnnng time! I was really bothered by it at the time, but I eventually listened to my body.

I crave it ALL THE TIME. I’ve been eating pseudo-vegetarian for the past… 4 years or so but I have eaten meat here and there. I’m not a big fan of seafood in general and I have NO taste for pork (and barely crave chicken or turkey at all), but lately my boyfriend and I have been buying ground beef from a local co-op. The meat comes for a farm about 5 miles away and is so delicious. Beef is the one meat I still crave.

new to your blog, keep up the good work 🙂

All this time I was wondering what this kombucha stuff was all about and why it’s worth the fuss and a trip to WF. Just goodgled it and OMG – it’s the “mushroom tea” juice!!! We used to have this Asian mushroom living in a gallon of weak tea at our home in Ukraine when I was a little girl. It was very en vogue then, to have this mushroom as a pet. People would pass the offshoots (or whatever they’re called in shroom-land) to their friends, and there was free kombucha in the house 24/7. Imagine. We used to make it ourselves and I never even suspected it would become cool in North America one day. Wonder if there’s a way to buy this mushroom anywhere here?

It’s all the same with kombucha – it’s called a scobi! I need Faith, Averie or Allie to step in with all the details, but there’s some definite mushroom sharing going on

Basically, the mushroom lives in the solution of weak black tea and ferments it into what’s called kombucha here. One every coupla days, you siphon off the kombucha and feed the shroom fresh tea solution. Ours lived in a 3-litre glass jar on a wondow sill.

Thanks for this blast from the past, Kath! 😉
