When It Rains, It Pours

Foodblog-5104

I woke up at 5:30 this morning, too excited to go back to sleep! For no particular reason – it’s just how I wake up every night with insomnia. I did some reading until Matt got up at 7:30 for a run.

I sent out this Tweet…

image

And then I tried to go back to sleep.

And felt a little pop… and another pop. Like those Pop Rocks from the 90s!

I got out of bed and ran into Matt, who had come back inside and canceled his run because it was pouring down rain.

“I think my water might have broken. Either that or something is stretching in there!”

I went straight for the toilet and sure enough: water broken.

I called my doula and we talked about next steps. I was thankful to take a hot shower and get dressed (one of my irrational labor fears was to have to go to the hospital in the middle of the night without a shower or brushed teeth!) I started packing the last minute essentials…so surreal!

Foodblog-5105

I made my bed….as perfectly as I could….for probably the last time as a family of 2!

Foodblog-5106

And then I did what normal people do – made oatmeal and photographed it!

Foodblog-5111

Labor day fuel.

Foodblog-5113

No idea when I will see you next, but I’ll try to be on Twitter! Thanks so much for all of your comments and support this week : )

You’d never choose to run a marathon without eating first so I definitely second the “eating a good breakfast” thing! Plus, she may not go into labor for another 12-24 hours and she wouldn’t want to not eat for that long.

    Good Luck! Best wishes!
PS I saw you at Fridays after 5 last week in your stripey shirt but was in the midst of a very *intense* conversation otherwise would have said hi…. Also I would have awkwardly been weaving through a crowd in a beeline for you which might have creeped you out.
    But yay go baby!

It’s been fun watching your pregnancy develop, as I am engaged to be married this coming April and already have baby makin’ on the brain! How exciting!! Just don’t go to the hospital too soon…that’s the #1 cause of lots of interventions. Our local birth center has the mom come in, checks on baby, does not insert ANYTHING in the mom (not even “sterile” gloved fingers) and then lets the mom go back home until labor starts (usually within 12-24 hours). Here’s to hoping things get moving fast for you!!!

And remember, labor pains only last during contractions and then you get breaks in between! You can do it! (Glad to hear you have a Doula!) Good luck and can’t wait for YOU to meet you little man! Love that you took the time to make and photograph your breakfast! I can totally relate. When my water broke, because I knew the next few days would be full of hospital food, I came downstairs and made a batch of orange scones. I then proceeded to enjoy a scone and some decaf BEFORE even mentioning the water breakage to my husband and mother who were still asleep upstairs. They both thought it was unusual to prioritize baking on that particular morning, but it seemed normal to me. 🙂 Wishing you an easy labor and delivery and a healthy, happy baby boy! Looking forward to hearing all about it.

It’s hard work, but as I sit here nursing my 6.5 week old, I can tell you I relish the memory of having an unmedicated natural birth. Be thinking about you today. I have never commented, although I have been a reader for almost two years now. I just had to let you know that I have obsessively been checking your blog for the past couple of weeks in anticipation of this day and obsessively checking your Twitter all day today. It feels like one of my best friends is going into labor, although I’ve never met you before. Best of luck tonight (and possibly into the morning) and in the days, weeks and months to come. I can’t wait to read all about it. Congratulations on your wonderful blog and wonderful, growing family.

I’m so happy for you! I know you’ve been so ready! Hopefully the baby will pop out like it does in Lost (they scream for like 2 minutes and then it’s like “whoop, dere it is!”) But it took me 14 hours to “pop out” 13 years ago, so maybe you’ll find a middle ground with yours!
