Welcome Back Oats

Thank you all so much for your kind words about my grandmother. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to travel to New Jersey for her funeral on Tuesday – the likely answer> is no since we have zero days off of our internship. But I’m going to check and see.

Today I’m going to WINTHROP instead of work!! We have our last monthly day of seminars + bizness to take care of before our internship comes to a close in July. It’s coming fast!!

Since I don’t have to be there until 10, I got to go to the gym this morning and get my workout out of the way so I can enjoy an all-American Friday night! It felt so good to be out biking just after sunrise.

I ate half of this sleepy banana before I left:

Bike –> 26 minutes of Stairclimber –> stretching –> Bike

Tomorrow is weights + swim!

WELCOME HOME ROLLED OATS!!!

IMG_2215 (640x427)

If you are using quick or instant oats I command you to stop immediately. Old fashioned rolled oats are the creme de la creme!! So sweet and creamy. I can’t believe we’ve been out for nearly a month!

IMG_2216 (640x427)

Chocolate & Zucchini = a great food blog!!

And a great oatmeal combo!

IMG_2229 (640x427)

The Mix

  • 1/3 cup super delicious old fashioned Quaker rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup water plus a splash more
  • 1/2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1/2 ripe banana
  • 1/4 cup Organic Valley cottage cheese (a new sample they sent me!! I’ve been buying their low-fat CC since the first sample they sent and it’s the best there is!)
  • 1/6 of a crumbled Great Harvest Zucchini Raisin Muffin
  • Coconut
  • Maranatha Chocolate Almond Butter

IMG_2232 (640x427)

IMG_2228 (640x427)

Spring Blend! 1 cup to go and I’m all out. <3

IMG_2222 (640x427)

The Mask

IMG_2225 (640x427)

I had to memorize and recite this poem in 7th grade. I still remember it!

We Wear the Mask

We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—
    This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
    And mouth with myriad subtleties.

Why should the world be over-wise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while
            We wear the mask.

We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
To thee from tortured souls arise.
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
    Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
But let the world dream otherwise,
            We wear the mask!

Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906)

IMG_2219 (640x427)

Our jasmine is in full bloom!! So pretty!

My lunch post might be a little late today because we’re working through lunch – see ya then!!

I smiled at the 7th grade poem thing. Isn’t it amazing how we can remember things like that, from so long ago, yet some days we can’t remember what day it is?!

Glad to hear you have your old-fashioned oats back too, once I made the switch from instant I realized I had been missing out on greatness for so long!

    Have a great day~

I agree 100% re the oats – quick cook automatic ones are INFERIOR compared to proper ones!
I can’t believe the internship wouldn’t let you take a day off for a funeral – isn’t that against a law!?

    That jasmine is beautiful.

Both of my grandfathers passed last year, and I was almost unable to go to one of the funerals. I ended up being able to go after all, but just remember– you got to see your grandmother when it was most important– during her LIFE.

Kath! I’m so sorry to hear about your Grandmother. Sounds like she lived a long and full life and went peacefully which is all we can wish for though. Hope you and your family are doing okay.

Love the poem, and I really love the Jasmine! We walked by some when I was on my short Florida getaway last weekend and it smelled so beautiful but I wasn’t sure what it was. It looks a little like honey suckle flowers but I knew it smelled different. Thanks for clearing that up, have a beautiful day!

I’m so sorry about your grandma. I just read your post from yesterday and it was beautiful to see her with her granddaughters–I can only hope to be so lucky in my old age as so be surrounded by the people I love.

On the happier subject of oatmeal…rolled oats are simply the best. I absolutely love the Silver Palate’s Thick and Rough rolled oatmeal because they toast it first, so it has this really unique texture that’s hard to explain. Very creamy but still with a nice tooth, not mushy at all.

Sorry to hear about your grandmother. If you can’t go, maybe you could do something at home to celebrate her life?

My husband picked up oats for me a couple weeks ago and got the quick cook oats by mistake. They are just so different (not necessarily bad). I miss my rolled!

    Hi Kath,

I am really sorry bout the loss of your grandmother.
Last year my grandfather died, and I didn’t go to the funeral because it was in another country, and I couldn’t take a week off. It is something that I regret a lot.
I would try as hard as possible to go. In the long run, missing a day or two of an internship won’t seem like a big deal. I am not sure if you will be able to say the same thing about your grandmothers funeral.

    Here goes…

I have a gift inside of me
    called my imagination
I like to turn the TV off
and I can be the station
I make up stories in my head,
    my cartoons are the best
It’s fun to use my mind a lot
    and let the TV rest!

    🙂 lol

Anywho, I hope you can make it to your grandmother’s funeral. I’ll keep my fingers crossed they give you the time you need. Hopefully they recognize this is an important situation.

It’s so funny you posted that poem! I was just talking about it the other day. We read that in 9th grade and had to write poems based on it, after which my mom decided I was “depressed” and tried to make me go see a therapist. I only recently explained to her it was a school assignment! I never knew why she made me go to therapy until now!
