I’m glad they’re giving you time off to go to the funeral, even if it will cost a bomb…(maybe you could sell Matt? :p)
Sounds like you’re having a busy day anyway.,,,I hope it’s going well!

Have you asked about a “bereavement fare?” If you call the airline and talk to someone and explain why you need the ticket in a rush, they will generally cut you a break. You will probably have to give some details about your grandmother and the funeral parlor. I did this a few years ago on Delta. The flight was still more than if I’d booked a month out, but it wasn’t $1000.

I called: “Sorry for your loss. We can offer you a flight at $1050.”

Aww, I’m glad they gave you the time off – but I cannot believe that flights are that expensive…that’s unbelievable. I hope something can be figured out.

I am glad they gave you the time off. Last minute flights are so expensive. I hope you find one a little cheaper! I would say crashing now is well deserved from the whirlwind of emotions you have had the past 24 hours! I hope you have a relaxing evening!

I’m in a similar boat. My Grandpa is very ill but to visit him before he dies, its $350 for the flight plus another $250 for hotel (and I’m only staying two days!).

Two years ago I was able to fly from Juneau, AK to Detroit Mi flying part way on either Delta or American Airlines and they were able to cut a huge chunk from the fair (when my Grandma died). Could you check another airline?

So sorry about your Grandma. Can you knock off some of the airline cost with miles (some programs offer pay 50%, lieage 50% deals)? Do you have family members with large mileage accounts that may give you a mileage ticket? Have you tried kayak.com to find the lowest fares? Sometimes they drop the day before – I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you.

I know its probably over 10 hours, but how about driving? Depending on how much time off you get it could be a cheaper option…

Hey Kath! I’m just a random reader, but I’m a HUGE fan of your site!!

I’m so sorry to hear about your loss 🙁 and your flight dilemma. I’m not sure how far you are trying to go from Philadelphia, but flights there are around $300 (I have a friend in Charlotte and have been trying to visit her forever!!). I don’t think renting a car is too terrible, either.

    I hope this helps!!

$1000?! That’s ridiculous… Some people are just not accommodating of human emotions. Jeez. I hope all this works out, though… 🙁 I’m praying for you and your family!
