Weekend: Picnics + Bow Ties

Another weekend filled with fun to share with you all!

Foodblog-

Fridays After Five have begun, which means we have plans every Friday until September!

Foodblog-5637

It was so much fun to take Mazen, although a bit tricky to work around naps and bedtime. We took his dinner and ours to go and things worked out well in the end.

Foodblog-5628

Little guy liked his broccoli, peas, butternut squash and green beans blend!

Foodblog-5630

We parents shared two salads with our friends – a lentil and millet Moroccan salad (recipe coming) and a kale salad, plus we munched on their arugula pasta salad and a triple berry + mint fruit salad. Delish!

Foodblog-5631

Another weekend routine that has started with springtime is the city market.

Foodblog-082504

We met Matt there for breakfast because he had baked me a surprise loaf of Irish Soda Bread! My favorite, and like Christmas in July to get it so far out from St. Patrick’s Day.

Foodblog-081908

Also for breakfast we shared fresh strawberries and a small donut

Foodblog-082326 Foodblog-083048

Later for lunch we made salads with leftover veggie burgers a friend made and kale from the garden

Foodblog-5649Foodblog-5652Foodblog-5653

Mazen enjoyed more veggie blend and some oatmeal

Foodblog-5654

Later in the afternoon we took Beansy to the park for some swingin’

Foodblog-131146

And crawl practice

Foodblog-5674

And laugh practice

Foodblog-5672Foodblog-5670Foodblog-5666

And by late afternoon, we headed into the country to a friends’ house for an Alternative Foxfield Party. Foxfield is a big horse race here and quite the wild event. We used to attend the Carolina Cup in Camden, SC in college – I don’t know if I want to relive those days!

We dressed in bold colors and bowties to celebrate : )

Foodblog-5690Foodblog-5689

We nibbled on cheese and crackers

Foodblog-5680

Sipped mint juleps, of course

Foodblog-5682

Raced the horses….er, zebras

Foodblog-5676

And enjoyed dinner outside

Foodblog-5694

Featuring No Bull Burgers

Foodblog-5695

And a great arugula and bean salad

Foodblog-5700

Sunday was slow and boring in contrast. We watched 3 episodes of Mad Men, took a walk, one of us took 3 naps, I went to yoga at Opal Yoga, Matt went running and we had quiche for dinner. Exciting times!

It’s great to see the family shots of the three of you together! I know that must be a challenge when you’re the one behind the camera but those photos of you guys together are so precious. What a beautiful family!

How do you like Mad Men? I watched the first episode and didn’t get hooked in at all and I’m wondering if it’s me or if I need to watch a few more to get into it.

I tried No Bull burgers when I was in Charlottesville last year! So good! I wish we had them here (not too far away in Blacksburg). That arugula bean salad looks yummy… is it a bean salad served over arugula or bean salad with arugula in it?

Who is your favorite strawberry vendor at the market? I recall last year having some trouble finding strawberries that hadn’t been sprayed.

I bought these from the Agriberry folks. She said they only spray when absolutely necessary and follow guidelines from an organization (that slips my mind) to keep things as close to organic as possible. I haven’t seen other vendors with them to bring up conversation yet though

Mazen is looking so much like you and your parents and especially Larbs these days – those distinctively shaped blue eyes!

Muddled mint, simple syrup (1:1 sugar to water) and bourbon. I’m not sure of the exact proportions – Matt??

You should give the Alton Brown method a try- muddle the mint WITH sugar until it forms a paste. That way when you add the whiskey and seltzer/water it doesn’t just have huge pieces of mint floating around. They are so refreshing in the warmer months! Yum.

I have a cooking question for you, since you’re so good at combining foods and flavors in ways I would never think of and you have a knack for making food prep easy! I really love crockpot cooking, but I have yet to figure out how I can use my trusty crock in spring and summertime to take advantage of all the seasonal foods available. Do you have any good ideas for summertime crockpot dishes I could try? Thanks in advance (because I KNOW you’ll come up with something great!!!!1!!)
