Tooth #3

this !
pix

I was no-so-lucky today. Tooth #3, Surface O, which has had a ‘watch’ on it for a while now, is ready for drilling. I was hoping I had ended my cavity phase from college with a better diet, but apparently my poor tooth genetics continues to haunt me. I floss every day!!!

It does help that I my dentist and she says that the decay area is only on the surface and not a big deal. Still don’t want any needles in my gums!!

I’m going back today at 2PM. Luckily they could squeeze me in. Doesn’t make for a very fun afternoon though.

After my appt. I didn’t feel much like running and sat in my car to think before I left. I finally decided that I drove all the way down there to run and that I’d warm up soon enough, so I set out. Not 2 minutes in I felt the tendon in my surgery foot go. I’m not sure if it was wearing tall heels on Saturday night or yesterday’s yoga, but what I am hypothesizing is my posterior tibial tendon has been giving me trouble since my surgery in 2005 and I took about 5 leaps into my run and knew something was wrong. I’m hoping a little non-running will help it heal quickly. But OF COURSE the week I decide to train for a half marathon this happens!! My feet are just not reliable, which is why I haven’t ever trained for races before. GUF.

Do instead of throwing the towel I went to the YMCA in the neighborhood and did 45 minutes of Stairmastering while watching House Hunters. At least the episode was one I hadn’t seen!

Home for a quick shower and lunch.

 IMG_1261 (640x427)

I made a tempeh + plum jam sandwich on Flax Oat Bran bread.

YES I ate the tempeh raw. No I can’t describe the taste! It tastes like tempeh! But it does go perfectly well with jam, and it’s so easy to plop onto a sandwich. And lasts a while in the fridge!

IMG_1260 (640x427)

Plus carrots with Maranatha AB

IMG_1255 (640x427)

And an overripe organic pear

IMG_1256 (640x427)

Every single bite was amazing in this lunch!

IMG_1253 (640x427)

Back to the dentist I go. Then tonight I’m joining Karen (my mother-in-law) for dinner and a Rockapella Christmas! Hope I am thawed out of my numbness by dinnertime…

Is Karen loving NBC’s “the Sing-Off” or what?
Sorry to hear about your cavity. However, it rocks that you were able to get a same-day appointment!

Oh boy… sorry about your cavity. I have soft teeth as well and have gone through my fare share of fillings. You think I wouldn’t mind going to the Dentist since he’s my father-in-law, but I’m still not a huge fan. I mean, who is?
Wishing you speedy thawed out numbness!

Rockapella should be a fantastic way to perk up the day. LOVE THEM!

I feel your cavity pain! No matter what I do, I get cavities every time! I floss every night, don’t have too much sugar and I brush after most meals. It’s just genetics to some extent I guess… though my brother eats whatever, “forgets” to brush all the time, and has no cavities. Hope your foot tendon heals very fast!

Wait, you decided to train for a half marathon?!? I wanna hear more! 🙂

Sorry about your teeth and foot. OUCH on both counts! Here’s my unsolicited advice, for what it’s worth…
Re: teeth: It won’t help YOU, but if you are aware that you have sub-par dental genetics, consider giving your future children fluoride vitamins if it isn’t already in your water. My brothers & I took fluoride until we were teenagers, and we ALL have excellent teeth!
Re: foot: First, good for you for not “running through” the pain. That can cause so much more damage! My advice is to consider seeing a (well-reputed) chiropractor. I know it sounds crazy, and some people don’t believe chiropractic care is worthwhile, but mine has helped me with so many various running aches & pains. From my upper back all the way down to my footsies.

Feel free to ignore everything I just said…unsolicited as it is…I just wanted to share what’s helped me!

I think there was fluoride in our water when I was young, and we did “swish” at school too. I think I got mom’s teeth 🙁

I’d be really shocked if a chiropractor could fix my foot. I’m afraid to start going to one because I’ve heard then you have to ALWAYS go to one (like dying your hair!) for maintenance.

I haven’t started training per se for anything, but was in the middle of a gradual running program and got wicked shin splints last night! So frustrating, like out of nowhere. I felt so defeated but, like you, found something else to get that heart rate up and put the negativity behind me. Good for you 😀 I need some Great Harvest Bread in my life btw!

For some of us, it must just be in the cards. The good news is I just found a great dentist who is going to replace my silver/mercury fillings with ceramic ones so I don’t have to carry around all the heavy metals in my mouth. 🙂

I think the soft teeth is genetic, though of course brush/flossing can minimize the problem. I had floride treatments when I was young, and later have lived mostly in communites that add it to the water or it occurs naturally. Not much help. I’ve fillings in all but my bottom center 6 teeth. I had one period in my life when I went to a not-so-good dentist, and I’ve ended up with cavities under those fillings and had to have them removed and replaced. Grrrrrr. I hope your filling goes well Kath.

And Rockapella! Oh, I’d love to see their Christmas show. I saw Straight No Chaser (another a cappella group) on PBS about a week ago. Their Christmas Can Can (available on You TUbe) is hysterical, as is their 12 days of Christmas.

Kath, I’ve always been told that running on sidewalks is much worse for you than running on pavement. I think the cement is harder than the roads so the impact is worse. Not saying that is what caused your foot to hurt, but I would take it into consideration when running. I try and look for a wide shoulder to run on vs. the sidewalk.

Sorry about your tooth and your foot!

I was curious–do you feel like the cardio equipment (Stairmaster, ET, etc.) gives you as good a workout as running? Does it really give your feet/knees/hips a break?

I’m a beginning runner (albeit a slow one), but I have joint pain from time to time (feet, knees, hips), so I alternate with cardio machines because I don’t want to risk long-term injury. But, sometimes I still feel like the cardio machines irritate my joints. Also, I don’t feel like I’m getting the same quality of workout I get with running–on the machines, I feel like my muscles get tired but I’m not breathing as hard or burning as many calories as when I run. Anyone else experience this? Maybe that means I should be doing more cross-training?

      Cates,
They are different workouts for sure. I do think running is harder – because there are hills and wind and you have to propel yourself, but according to my heart rate, the calorie burn is the same and I think the cardio machines do work different muscles. I often will sweat just as hard on the stairmaster or in a cycle class as I would running. I can do the indoor machines with my foot no problem, so they def. do make an impact on my joints.

    Hey Kath,
I’m a senior dental student, so I can help give a teensy bit of insight on your tooth issue. Tooth #3 is an upper right molar and surface “O” is the chewing surface. If you look at an unfilled molar tooth, it has a bunch of grooves and fissures. This is where bacteria like to hide! Good oral hygiene habits can reduce these bacteria, but tooth brush bristles can’t reach all the way into those tiny fissures, so that is the most common place to develop cavities. It also can’t really be prevented by flossing which is good for your gums and cavities between your teeth. So, I’m sure you’re doing a great job and don’t be too hard on yourself about a small cavity!

another dental student here….mouthwash is pretty much worthless as a preventative measure. It makes your mouth feel cleaner and it has no real effect on your overall dental/oral health. Make sure you are brushing all the surfaces of your teeth adequately, especially the ones all the way in the back because they are so much harder to reach and where bacteria like to hang out. So brushing can definitely keep those areas clean! Keep going to the dentist regularly and maybe have your hygenist go over brushing technique w/ you and get any sign of caries taken care of as soon as possible so they don’t get any bigger! And Im so happy to see someone concerned about preventative care!

I took one Xanax in the car on the way, one in the waiting room and then after talking to me and having me start crying…the endodontist walked out to my husband and said, “Yeahhhh….we’re gonna need another one of those Xanax.”

I have the same problem. I floss regularly and every time I go to the dentist, they always put a watch on some teeth which inevitably turns into a we need to do a filling.

What? I totally missed the training for a 1/2 marathon announcement. Kath, that’s great! Good for you! When is the race?

      Lauren,
I never announced it on the blog – just to a few people. Mostly because I knew something like this would happen to my foot the second I did announce! I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it. Hopefully this is a fluke that will go away again soon. The race is in April.

I hate that numb feeling from novacaine and I hope that you did well at the dentist.

And sorry about your foot. Take it easy and I hope it heals quickly.

    Hey Kath!

I was looking for a good Christmas-morning breakfast casserole recipe, and came across this Egg Nog French Toast recipe I thought you might like, considering your recent egg nog experimentations. 🙂

Sorry to hear about the foot. Do you have a program you’re following to train for the half-marathon? I really like the FIRST program (http://www.furman.edu/first/fmtp.htm)- it’s free online and only does 3 days a week of running which is all I can handle, but it expects you to do intense cross-training. It seems right up your alley since you can’t run everyday and cross-train a lot! Good luck!

So sorry about your foot! The minute I signed up for my first half marathon (in March) I got diagnosed with tendonitis!! And now I’m having minor foot surgery in January, can we say running to finish and not for speed?! 🙂

I used to have all kinds of joint troubles when I was running a lot on pavement. Now I only run on dirt paths (not trails though – I trip and fall a lot!) and I haven’t had any trouble since. You may also need new shoes? Hopefully it was just a fluke and goes away quickly so you can still train! Good luck.
