Splish Splash

The farmer’s market was a success! I forget how much it is a pretty good market in the summer. I just hate the highway and warehouse setting!

IMG_8346 (1024x768) (2) IMG_8347 (1024x768) IMG_8348 (1024x768) IMG_8349 (1024x768) IMG_8352 (1024x768) IMG_8351 (1024x768)

I made to sure look for the “Local NC” flag or ask the vendor where their produce came from. I got all of this for under $20. Huge bag of basil, tomatoes, okra, jalapenos, corn, pepper, cuc, zucchini, a new green, organic peaches, Hugh Jass yellow pepper. (The stuff in the bowl is from earlier)

IMG_8357 (1024x768)

Upon leaving the market I had $7 left and saw this:

IMG_8355 (1024x768)

I chatted with the guy and he brings up fresh seafood from the NC coast each Friday. He was sold out of most things, so I came home with one of these:

IMG_8356 (1024x768)

Gross!! Guess we’ll be learning how to filet a fish tonight

 this !

Once home I packed up my bags and a bite to eat and biked to the pool!

IMG_8360 (1024x768)

I found a nice spot in the shade. I do not like the sun! I’m in the sun enough as it is.

IMG_8361 (1024x768)

IMG_8359 (1024x768)

And I settled in with this great poolside book. I’m about 25% of the way in and love it!!! I’ve started a few heavier books recently and put them down because I’ve been so busy my mind wants easy summer reading. This book couldn’t have come in the mail at a better time. Emily’s writing is witty and thoughtful and I love that each chapter is a short story in a larger life tale. And her recipes are awesome!!! I’ve already got about 4 earmarked to make 🙂

IMG_8358 (1024x768)

Around 12:30 I dug into my lunch – a Ham + Laughing Cow sandwich on a Jalapeno Corn Bun with basil and red pepper. These buns are amazing!! Fluffy like bread with flavor like cornbread and a bit of spice.

IMG_8363 (1024x768)

More cherries

IMG_8367 (1024x768)

And a half cup of avocado soup, which I saved and ate after my swim.

IMG_8365 (1024x768)

In love with these!

IMG_8366 (1024x768)

IMG_8362 (1024x768)

After 30 minutes of digestion ( ) I went for a swim!! I swam laps for 15 minutes and then pool walked, mom-style for another 10 before I felt the sun soaking into my veins.

IMG_8368 (1024x768)

After another hour of reading, I biked home.

And found boys in my garage and a stinky grain smell!

IMG_8371 (1024x768)

I joined them for a game of Bocci ball and may have had a few sips of beer while playing in the yard!

IMG_8372 (1024x768)

This girl needs a SHOWER!!!!!!!!!

And a snack 😉

You did some great shopping there!
I need to get to the market soon.

I think that book sounds great! Please give us a review when you are done. The cover reads like my life- minus the new recipes!

    NICE BUNS, Kath. 😀 hehehe

I love the sun, but I need to be careful to come inside cause this blond farm girl has to watch her skin!!!

I wish we lived close, I’d bring you some raspberries from our pickins!!! Oh Kath, you’d love them!!! I catch myself saying “I wonder what else Kath would add to this?” when making my basic bowls of oats. Even if I don’t add anything, I love to just imagine what the heck you’d add in!! You are very creative, indeed my friend!

You gotta try my bibb lettuce-chicken, mega almond butter smoosh wraps. Kath, I PROMISE… heaven!!!

    XOXO Pols

    Fun times!

Have you ever read anything by Ruth Reichl? If you appreciate good food, good writing and good humor, she’s one you should definitely check out (Garlic and Sapphires, Comfort Me With Apples and Tender at the Bone are in my library.)

And I agree…nice buns! Looks yummy!

Have you ever made those squash things in the 3rd picture from the farmer’s market? I’m always intrigued by them but I have no idea what to do with them.

Looks like you had a great farmers market trip. I’m always amazed how much produce I can get. The fish at my market is usually expensive, but it’s really good…there’s nothing that tastes like perfectly fresh fish. I’ve never fileted my own before. Instructions????

I’m with you about the sun. No matter what amount of sunscreen I apply, it never seems to be enough or working as well as I want it too. Loved being outdoors, but I abhor that sun.

There’s a really great old Twilight Zone episode about people living under a very hot sun or cold , dark days. It’s a great episode. Check it out if its ever on reruns.

Hey Kath, great idea to go read by the pool. I’ve never though of doing that. Does it ever get too loud with all the kiddies splashing around? I guess that’s why I never though of it. I might spend the day at the pool tomorrow!

I know this is a silly question, but do you use regular Laughing Cow cheese, or the light lower-fat version? I’m just interested.

I can see why you’d dislike the setting of that farmers market. However, I guess it’s a good idea to have it covered if the weather turns bad, and it probably gets a lot of customers being on a highway. Sure looks like a great load!

Sounds like a wonderful afternoon at the pool! What a perfect summer setting! 🙂

    polly ,
I do want to try your wraps soon!!

And add something crunchy to your oats next time – the secret is mixing textures!

    Megan (The Runner’s Kitchen),
Yes, it tastes like a hearty quac with sour cream mixed in for creaminess.

    Abby ,
I haven’t read her – on the list!

    Daria (Summer of the CSAs),
Pattypan squash? I’ve cooked the baby ones before (roasted) and they were good! NOt sure about the bigger ones, but I’d just slice ’em up and roast.

    Michelle ,
I like the kids splashing!! (Although not ON me 🙂 ) Makes me feel like it’s a festive family occasion.

    Richard ,
I had to go check – they are the light ones. I’ve always bought them so I don’t know the difference.

I hope your peaches are better than mine – I got some from that market last week and they were a little mealy. I froze them for smoothies instead of eating them raw.

I have been reading and enjoying your blog so much! Have you ever tried the Matthews Community Farmers Market? It is a growers only market the defines local as within a fifty mile radius, so you don’t have to worry about resellers. The majority of the produce os also organic! Try!
