Make The Best Smoothie Tips & Tricks

I love a good, thick smoothie with real food ingredients. Today I’m sharing my best smoothie tips & tricks along with my go-to recipe!

Kath Younger blending purple berry smoothie in a Vitamix blender. this !

It’s no secret that I love a good smoothie or smoothie bowl. After all, they’re such an easy and delicious way to eat a bunch of wholesome real foods at once.

From Tropical Smoothies to Lemon Raspberry and Super Green Smoothie Bowls, a creamy bowl of fruits, veggies, protein and greens always makes me feel fantastic.

Plus, smoothies are one of the easiest ways to sneak in fruit, veggies and immune-boosting antioxidants for the kiddos – am I right? I mean, Mazen was anti-berries for a while (I know!), but he never knew what made his smoothie purple! And since Birch doesn’t have all the molars for chewing greens, smoothies are the ideal way for him to eat them.

This pretty purple smoothie is one of our go-to recipes as it covers all of the bases with antioxidant-rich berries and greens, heart-healthy oats, omega-3-rich chia, and protein from the organic milk and protein powder. It’s fruity and filling!

Total Time 5 minutes
Servings 2 servings

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups milk use less for a thicker smoothie
  • 1 cup frozen berries
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup greens
  • 1 handful oats
  • 1 Tbsp chia or flax seeds
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder

Instructions

  • Blend away!

How To Make The Best Smoothie

1. Start slow.

Start at the lowest speed and slowly work your way up to high. Turn the speed up about one-third of the way and wait until the big pieces of fruit begin to break up and you see a vortex begin to form in the center. Then slowly add more speed.

2. Count on frozen banana for a thickening agent and natural sweetener.

Not a fan of bananas? Greek yogurt, oats and avocado bulk up smoothies, too.

3. Skip the ice.

Who likes watery smoothies? Not me! To make your smoothie icy cold sans ice, use frozen fruit and vegetables and cold milk straight from the fridge.

4. Add some crunch.

The best part of a smoothie or smoothie bowl is this toppings, wouldn’t you agree? Top your smoothie with this homemade nutty granola, crunchy tahini granola, or frozen berries.

The Best Blender For Smoothies

I swear by my Vitamix blender. I’ve had it for a decade, and it’s still as good as new. Not only is it the absolute blest for blending the creamiest smoothies, but we use it for homemade nut butters, soups, dressings, and more.

The Best Liquid For Smoothies

We always have organic whole milk on hand, so that’s often what I use, but you really can’t go wrong. Almond, oat, coconut, soy milk – whatever is your preference, do your thing! Coconut water is a great liquid for the summery months.

The Best Smoothie Sweeteners

If you’re making a fruity smoothie, the natural sugars from the fruit usually make it sweet enough. Banana, mango and pineapple are great natural sweeteners. You can always sweeten things up by adding a Medjool date or two!

The Best Smoothie Boosters

The possibilities are endless! We often add a scoop of vanilla protein powder and chia seeds for Omega-3s. Some other favorites include: flax seeds, hemp seeds, collagen peptides, nut butter, cinnamon, matcha or yerba mate, and adaptogens like maca powder.

I like Arbonne or Vega for plant based and Naked Nutrition or Tera’s Whey (both grass-fed) for whey.

Can you share which protein powder you use? I look at them, but never know which one to get. Thanks!

I’m lactose intolerant, so afraid to buy a protein powder, for fear it will cause tummy problems. Help!

Yum. I’m going to try your ratios to make my smoothie a nice purple. Mine always end up an ugly shade of brown when I add spinach and berries together (but tasty nonetheless). 🙂
