Seasons Eatings

I got so much done this morning!! Although I’m saving my workout for Girls on the Run hour, I still set my alarm for 5:30 since I got in bed around 10 and knew that would be enough sleep. After getting up, showering, and dressing, I cleaned the guest room and bathroom, vacuumed and dusted, vacuumed the downstairs and cleaned the powder bath. And I’ve got laundry in the oven (hee hee – washer). We’re all ready for our special guest tonight: my totally awesome California (second) cousin, Anna! Here she is at our wedding (on the L) with my cousins and Uncle B! I’m excited 🙂

A106-0427

Remember the days of summer when I had berries in my oats everyday? It’s amazing how my tastes and cravings change with the seasons. Today: more pumpkin!

1/3 cup oats, milk, water

Half banana

Pinch salt

1/2 cup pumpkin, stirred in at end

Cinnamon

Tsp brown sugar

Toasted pecans

Spoonful Barney Butter

I had two short cups –

Driving an hour for a 50 minute class – including this scary quiz! I didn’t have time to memorize all the reactions so I just tried to understand the concept behind them so I can hopefully figure it out myself. Hope that technique works!

Rest of the day:

  • Study micro
  • Lunch
  • Short run
  • GOTR 5K practice
  • Shower at YMCA
  • Snack
  • Micro lab (a short one)
  • Greet Anna
  • Eat black bean soup
  • Bed

Adios!

That looks just like my day. Well, except without the studying, exercising, and black bean soup. But I’ll probably have fried rice for lunch, which is good.

Good luck on the scary quiz.

I love the fact that you get up after 7.5 hours sleep- sounds like you got a ton done! If I was in the same situation I would probably still sleep much later into the morning.. I feel tired on waking no matter how much sleep I get!

Hi Kath. I’m a fairly new reader (followed you via link after your Chicago trip)…anyway, I just wanted to thank you. I have been so inspired to “spice” up my oatmeal in many different ways after seeing your blog. I’ve been enjoying it so much these past couple of days. Thanks for putting the exact measurements (1/3 oats, 1/3 milk, 1/3 water) because otherwise I would be pretty clueless — I don’t make oatmeal that often.

Quick question, I’ve been using instant oats. What kind do you use and how long does it take to cook?

    Kath!
    This probably sounds crazy buuuuut…

How did you handle leaving your job. I tried to do school FT and work in my office FT for my first semester of grad school. MAny breakdowns later all my friends, family, profs, classmates, school therapist, etc (you get the idea) told me i need to quit my job for my health, sanity, ability to get school work done and have a life…

so, after four years in this career (that i really started to hate a few years ago anyway), i’m hitting the road. it’s exciting and scary.

luckily you have your lovely hubby to help support you (ahh! impending brokeness!) but how did you handle that mentally, knowing school was your FT gig and “real” work was going away? it’s freaking me out. Any advice? anyone?

I totally plan my day out like that too. It’s the only way I feel like I know what’s going on when I’m busy.

Jen – good luck, it sounds like you are making big changes in your life. The only suggestion I have is to stay organized with your schedule and finances. I think those things probably freak me out the most when I think about leaving work to go back to school full time (which I am considering soon).

    jen ,
You will probably appreciate your schooling so much more without the stress of your job on top of your school work. You’ll be able to put much more time into it, and it will be worth the pay cut in the long run to have your sanity back. We’ve had to cut back on lots of things since I left my job: weekend getaways, more frequent dinners out, etc. We were just discussing the other day how our lives are so different now than when we first moved into our apartment out of college and had two incomes and a much lower cost of living. You’ll figure out a way to make things work, but know that being happier day in and out is probably better than a new shirt or a trip that your job income might allow. I’d recommend Mint.com to track your spending (which has been SO valuable and eye-opening for me), and know that it IS possible to spend less on food – I can’t believe how much I’ve learned already this month during the Challenge. Hope that helps a little..

The fact that you notice and honor your seasonal cravings is pretty cool, Kath. My seasonal cravings tend to run along the lines of: Turkey and stuffing in November, jelly beans in April, and, um, hamburgers on the grill in July ;).

Also, thanks for the link to mint.com—I am sorely in need of some budgeting assistance myself!
