Rain On The Brain

Morning all! Turns out I slept horribly last night. It started with my book (Barefoot, which is SO good!) that rattled me brain, then I was thinking about the new syllabus, my classes, and all things school related and I could NOT settle my brain.

I BLAME THAT EVIL CUP OF COFFEE!!

I tried some breathing, which only led me to realize I was starving. I did some quick math and with no snacks yesterday, I figured I was only at about 1400 calories including a workout. After 10 more minutes, I decided to go down for some cereal. I had a bowl of H2H with Kashi U on the bottom and milk. I also had another big handful of H2H.

It seemed to do the trick because I fell asleep right when I got back up to bed. But since an 11:45 bedtime would put me getting up at 5:45 with less than 7 hours of sleep, I reset the alarm. I never choose exercise over sleep if it means less than 7 hours. We’ve got a Davidson alumni event uptown to go to for dinner tonight at 6pm so my only time to workout today is between my 2 classes. Since I’ve been thinking about doing this on T/TH anyway, I though I’d give it a try today. We’ll see how I feel at 10:45. Maybe my class will get out early. So I did light make-up after my shower and packed a bag to go. Thank GOODNESS they have towel service so that’s one less thing to haul around!

This morning we’ve got major rain outside. Not ideal for walking around a campus!!

Down on coffee, I had a big cup of water and a big bowl of oats .

Today’s combo:

  • 1/3 cup oats, 1/3 cup 1% milk, 1/3 cup water
  • 2 tbsp-ish ryeberries (which the husband declared we’d call ‘grainberries’ from now on since he never knows what kind I make)
  • Vanilla, salt
  • A spoonful of raspberry jam (I was craving jam this morning – weird!)
  • Walnuts, crumbled
  • Blueberry granola plank
  • AB

Daniel Radcliffe was on Conan last night and I watched just a few minutes after breakfast. He’s SO CUTE! I’d happily take Harry Potter or Frodo Baggins in exchange for my husband for a week 😉 But the funny thing is, I think HE would too!

that’s really good that you choose sleep over excercise. maybe i’m being too hard on myself… haven’t gotten that much sleep lately. but then do you push your workout to later in the day or just skip it entirely?
i find that if i don’t work out shortly after getting up i end up thinking (sometimes dreading) about it all day.

I like your philosophy about sleep and working out. I think that makes a lot of sense… you should be fully rested before jumping into the next thing.

    Have a great day!

Sorry you didn’t sleep well. I’ve been backing off of coffee after 2 p.m. for the same reason–even if I sleep I don’t feel well rested if I’ve had any late in the afternoon.

Have a great day! Beginning of school is always exciting.

With all your education/experience, can you or any other readers suggest a cookbook/website for new low sodium recipes? I’m trying to help my hubby control his blood pressure and while not a chef, I can cook (and enjoy following recipes). Or any superfoods you recommend to help lower the BP? Thanks.

I loved Barefoot. I’ve read all of Elin Hilderbrand’s books and really enjoy them, especially in the summer.

As we move into fall, I thought I’d share my oatmeal this morning. Not the most creative, but festive for fall mornings.

Apple Pie Oatmeal: simmer 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup skim, pinch of salt, one chopped apple; stir in ground flax, nutmeg, and cinnamon; top with a drizzle of maple syrup, walnuts, and peanut butter. Yum!

    kath –

you’re exhausted! not only from last night i imagine, but you’re demanding school scheduled, the impending doom of a cumulative exam before the class starts, a quick weekend trip to boston, the recipe book, and the very idea you have to do all this and be healthy fit and fabulous! (and take the time to record it down in a beautiful blog.)

girl, take a second and breath and do something JUST FOR YOU. (don’t have a mountain of pizza or anything,) take a day off the blog, a long hike, plan a day of hooky from school and work with the hubbie. SOMETHING outside of your deadlines.

somebody give this girl a hug…

The planets must be aligned strangely today because both I and the bf slept like crap last night and woke up (late) in a terrible mood, my breakfast consisted of 2 cups of black coffee and 2 Advil . Ugh. Let’s just declare today as National Screw-Everything Day and all stay in bed and watch movies. Anyone with me?

Although seeing as I am typing this rant from work I am apparently not celebrating the holiday….

I actually prefer to go to bed a little hungry, it’s almost soothing to me because otherwise I usually feel bloated from eating too much and that’s no fun. Plus I love waking up hungry, because then I’m excited to get my oatmeal on. But real hunger, that’s not cool. Gotta feed the machine.

I don’t think it was the coffee if you had it early enough in the morning. Probably “night before the first day” nerves. I have a hard time turning my brain off at night. I still get up and work out because I function very well early in the morning, but I sure feel it later! But, I do it anyway because if I skipped my workout every time I got less than 7 hours of sleep I would be in some awful shape.

Keep being a good example and enjoy the fact that you aren’t working full time while you’re in school. Have a good first day and I hope your orgo lab instructor isn’t as mean as mine was!

Good luck, Kath! Hope your day goes well. You are ALWAYS so busy and I really admire your dedication and how you are able to still get everything done and make it look so easy! I wish I could get up early to do my workouts like you do. It would make my life so much easier. I keep setting the alarm, but wind up turning it off and deciding to sleep instead. I then do my workouts after work which I hate. It would be so much nicer to get it under my belt and be able to enjoy the rest of my day without my workout hanging over my head. I don’t know how you do it, but I really admire you!

Kath (and anyone else who has been through it and has ideas for me):

I know you have wrist pain sometimes and I have begun to experience wrist pain, especially while at work. i work at a computer all day. How do you cope with it, and what kinds of preventive exercises have you found work? I have googled it as well but it seems that the suggestions are all over the place.

i agree with runjess (or maybe we are just so in love with coffee that we have to defend it!). nerves about starting something new are pretty much the only thing that can keep me up — and i am usually the best sleeper ever. the coffee should have been out of your system by nighttime (unless you had a big cup in the afternoon or something.)

of course, take this with a grain of salt from the girl who drink a large cup of starbucks at midnight last night (on call) and still had no problems taking advantage of a 2am nap opportunity!

hope you have a great day @ school today!

    Lida ,
If I can push it back, I do that, but if I don’t have time (like during my summer school session) I just skip it.

    Eliza ,
You have to put your finger in a hole and push it down and pull toward the back at the same time. Just fiddle with it!

    Nadine ,
I second DASH. I think http://www.myrecipes.com allows you to search for low sodium as well.

    Tina ,
    Hilarious.

    Maran ,
Weird!! I’m loving the book. It’s been so fun to read. It’s getting sad though….I have no idea how it will end!

    sarahH ,
We have one closet in our whole downstairs: the laundry room. It’s got hook for coats, cleaning stuff, the W/D, and some shelves. It’s near my computer desk so I’d rather just put the school stuff in there than have my desk up in the guest room or something. Whenever we move I’m going to require more storage!

    Rebecca ,
    Welcome to KERF 🙂

    jimmi ,
I’m having a glass of wine tonight at the alunni event – that should help!!

    Ange C.,
I ordered two yoga/pilates DVD’s a few weeks ago and whadda ya know, I “haven’t had time” to do them. I will try to make an effort!!

    Sharon ,
    Thanks for your comment!

    rhodeygirl ,
When mine was mouse related at work, I actually switched my mouse to the left hand. It took about 2 days to get adjusted, then it was totally fine. If it’s typing related, could you request a new keyboard? Worst case just take a break from typing like I had to a little this summer.

    Erica ,
I’d say it was the moon since we all seem to have trouble sleeping but I put my sleep mask on to black out light about 10 minutes in!
