Polarity

I’ve been having crazy mood swings , extreme cravings and such today. Hormones?

Here’s breakfast ….a little late than never!

  • Prepared banana oats with hemp milk
  • 1/3 cup wheatberries
  • Flax
  • Trail mix
  • PB spoon

I was also strangely craving hot tea , so I had some of that as well.

Then I was starving at 9:30 !! I was 10 minutes from digging into my lunch when I switched classes and when it was time, I wasn’t hungry at all.

We took our lecture/lab break really early at 11:15, so I had an early lunch.

PB&J . I LOVE PB&J but it never fills me up and usually leaves me wanting more. Today was no different –

Also had Fage (ate it first so there was no chance of wasting it!), a big carrot and a plumble jumble:

So since we labbed early, we finished early! I was done at 1p.m. The plan was to workout at Winthrop’s gym , which I had been excited about all morning. But at 1, I felt drained. No energy for a workout, so I decided to go home and use the afternoon to get a paper done.

Once home, a nap sounded appealing, as i could barely keep my eyes open on the drive back. But I HATE NAPS !! I hate sleeping in general – there are so many more fun things to do, but I found myself asleep in bed 10 minutes from walking in the door. And I slept for 45 minutes!!! I can usually just snooze for 15 and wake myself up when I do nap, so that was out of character too. Guess i needed the sleep.

I think I dreamt of Kashi crackers because I woke up with a huge craving for them. And I didn’t just have a few, I had three handfuls this size. I was a little hungry, but that wasn’t the best way to sit and enjoy a snack.

So now i’m in my workout clothes with dinner packed and have 30 minutes to write this paper before I go to the gym. I don’t think it’s getting written today.

We’ll see where this afternoon takes me…. woooooo (ghost noise).

Nap= 🙂 I love a short nap or a long one but normally I just wake up after 15 or 20 minutes. Take care Kath.

    Hi Everyone!
I hope someone reading this is from South Dakota or has visited because I need your help!
I’m visiting the Black Hills/Mt. Rushmore with my family this weekend and need recommendations: where to eat, what to do, where to stay etc.
If you have any info please let me know–it would be such a huge help
    Thanks! 🙂

    Maybe you’re pregnant.

    Seriously, though:
    1. There’s only 6 crackers in your hand. So 3 handfuls = 18 crackers = 147 calories. I think you can relax.
    2. Re: sleep- it’s clear you’ve been overdue for a rest day for quite awhile. Your body finally forced you to stop for a freakin’ minute and take a break.

Remember sleep produces important hormones that regulate appetite and metabolism, so it’s a crucial part of any weight loss and maintenance. And healthy living in general!

That’s too funny Kath–I hate sleeping also! I unfortunately am one of those people who needs a good amount (really no less than 8 hours) to be able to function…but sometimes I wish it weren’t necessary because there are so many other things I could fill those hours with!

Hope you feel back to normal soon.

I agree that Kath really didn’t eat *that* many crackers. But I know that for me, even a tiny overindulgence can feel really lousy if I do it the wrong way or for the wrong reasons. Eating really fast, eating mindlessly, eating because I have terrible out-of-control cravings…not fun. So I think I see where Kath is coming from. Even if you don’t eat that much, the manner of eating can feel really lousy.

Feel better, Kath. I think you needed that nap!

Just wondering, do you ever spend any time just quietly stretching? I find that it calms me, and relaxes tension in my muscles and helps me keep up a large workload…also decaf tea in the afternoons…keeps the cravings off and keeps me calm and refreshed so I can get stuff done…just thought i’d share 🙂

I think it’s great that you let your body rest, Kath. It sounds like you’ve been going, going, going for a really long time and needed to rest.

I went through a grueling grad school program that just ended last December, all while working two jobs and exercising consistently, plus all the household chores and stuff. At the end I got so sick I lost my voice completely for more than a week, which never ever happens to me. So it’s good that you’re listening to your body.

Just out of curiousity—do your family or friends ever get on your case about exercise? I know my parents, especially my mother, are always telling me to stop going to the gym so much and slow down.

It’s pretty common for people to always think young newlywed women are preggers. When I first got married, I got that from EVERYONE (for like 3 years!) every time I felt tired, cranky or sick to my stomach.

9 years later, they’ve gotten the hint that I’ll let them know when I’m having a baby :p

Laurel, my family gets on my case but today I realized that I am working out too much. I did a cycle class then ran four miles and was planning on doing barbell strength tonight at six. I wanted to go and have the energy but then I thought about it and everyone I told was like “that’s too much exercise”. So i’m doing that class tomorrow even though my favorite instructor is teaching tonight. Oh and the baby thing. I’ve been married for three years and I am a teacher. There is no way in Hell i’m getting preggers any time soon. I wish someone would tell my parents that. lol!

Ha ha these comments make me laugh, just a few notes…

    1) I don’t think Kath is pregnant. So she has mood swings and wierd hunger. It happens.

    2) I agree on the cracker thing. You had three small handfuls of crackers. I wouldn’t even call that a handful. More like a handhalf. They were crackers, not chocolate truffles.

    3) YOu needed a break. Life is TOO short to be so structured.

I do love stretching…and need to do it more. I’ll do some tonight- thanks for the reminder.

    Laurel ,
My whole family likes exercise (my dad walks like 6-7 miles a day!) so they all think exercising is normal and part of a healthy life. But my grandfather thinks getting up at 5 to exercise is ridiculous because he “has maintained his weight his whole life with just 20 minutes on the Stat bike and 100 push-ups.” Lol.

    Hi y’all-
what no one’s mentioned: I think Kath’s mood swings & cravings were CAUSED by tiredness! I know when I haven’t gotten enough sleep it makes me starving; and actually, there are chemical changes in the brain that cause feelings of hunger when there’s a lack of sleep.

So: all morning Kath was feeling moody and hungry and craving stuff, then she accidentally fell asleep for a long nap, which is unusual for her. I think tiredness was at the root of it all! Case closed 🙂

Hi Kath – I just wanted to say thanks for sharing your down swings as well as your ups. Your commitment and success helps me to focus more on my portion sizes (since I do eat healthy). But in some ways I think it was even better to read about your own struggles and the way that you’re patient with yourself. Sometimes it’s hard to just be patient with yourself and do what feels right. I think all of us can use a reminder of that.
