Oats: Version 1,026

We were up and freezing this morning to a 62* house. Heat? I’d love to wait until November! Perhaps I should break out the space heater. Despite the cold, we dressed warmly and set out on a 4ish mile run. It was actually a pretty good run. I wore just the right clothes (just typed close!) to not be cold but not be too sweaty inside either: long sleeves, thin fleece, spandex pants.

Throughout the whole run I was excited about trying Krista’s Canadian Flax Oats by Windy Hill Foods.

DSC05071

They are a mix of oats, flax seeds, bulgur, rye, grits, corn meal, millet meal and seeds. Yum! Really they were mostly just oats with flax, but the consistency and flavor were quite different. The nutritionals are almost the same as regular oats.

DSC05072

They seemed to cook quicker than our normal oats and were definitely thicker – which I liked for a change!

DSC05078

My bowl included:

  • 1/3 cup flax oat porridge, 1/3 cup milk, 1/3 cup water
  • 1/2 large banana
  • Salt, vanilla
  • 1 tbsp wheatberries
  • Walnuts
  • Trail mix parts (choco chips, raspberries, a few peanuts)
  • Pumpkin butter for sweetness
  • AB on a spoon

DSC05076

Plus a serving of chandelier coffee with half and half splashed in –

DSC05074

I love our new placemats! Why did it take me so long to get some in my favorite color green?

DSC05073

Thanks to Charlie at Back to the Fridge, I now have a cool Favicon for KathEats.com in my site’s colors!! You know the little icon that shows up on the tab and when you bookmark it? If you are still seeing the navy blue squares, try clearing your computer’s cache and refreshing the page. Thanks Charlie!!!

I’m off to take this exam, then home for a relaxing day of working on long-term final projects.

And I hear one of my best friends from college (and the husband’s frat brother and my former boyfriend!) SNAKE might be in the area. I hope we get to see him!

Adios!

    Hi Kath,

Just curious, if this is something you have learned in your nutrition studies, but I had heard that eating whole flax seeds does not offer the health benefits of the seed being ground. I think it was actually DR Oz. on Oprah.

Those oats look so creamy and thick. Yum.

cb – I think you’re right! You actually don’t get anything from them unless they’re broken up – if you just eat them whole I think your body passes them right back out 🙂

    Almost the weekend!

hi kath-Can you help me out? I have a Hodgson Mills Gingerbread mix to use, it calls for 1/2 cup melted butter. Is there something I can use to substitute for butter? What do you think and would the measurements be the same. Thank you for your help.

cindy – I wouldn’t take all the butter out because without fat bread can get very dense, but try substituting 1/3 or 1/2 of the melted butter for applesauce. It’s hard to gauge how it will affect it since it’s a mix, but generally my rule of thumb is never take out more than 1/2 of the fat that you are subbing the applesauce for.

Or you could really use any kind of pureed fruit – canned pumpkin might go nice in a gingerbread loaf!! Happy baking 🙂

Chewy, delicious and EXPENSIVE by themselves 🙁

    cb ,
Definitely true that the seeds need to be broken or ground to be absorbed. But they are fun to eat whole 🙂

    cindy ,
I’m not a baking expert, but sounds like Cat is!

    Rose ,
Linens and Things – better hurry because they close!

    sirenjess ,
I said in the post it’s about the same as oats – 110 kcal for 1/3 cup.

    anne ,
A spoonful of almond butter (AB) or peanut butter (PB). Welcome to KERF!

It’s only chandelier because you can see the reflection from the dining room. But it was Fresh Market French Vanilla.

    Jaclyn ,
Hahaha. But his Snake isn’t menacing at all! It actually started as Sneaky, which was shortened to Sneak, which was accidentally typed “Snake” on AIM once and then we just called him Snake.

I have another friend who used to have a huge beard. His name is Beard. But for a long time we called him Bread after another typo incident.

Another friend is named Canada. Go figure on that one!
