Brain Juice

“Happy birth-day to meeeee. I’m out of Micro-biol-ug-yyy!”

We were finished with our lab at 7 tonight!!! What a great birthday week gift 🙂

Another fun birthday week gift? Dinner with the husband on a Wednesday night!

Bundled up at a picnic table:

DSC05066

He packed sardine-salmon salad sandwiches (that’s a mouthful – in more ways than one!), sweet potato fries (a little cold, but still good) and an apple to share for dessert.

DSC05060

This was one heavy sandwich. The SSS was made with sardines packed in lemon olive oil (see this post for more info on the deliciousness of sardines), a can of salmon, cuc, carrot, light mayo, & red curry powder. He said it made 3 servings and there’s one leftover. This was one heavty sandwich! But I surely got in lots of calcium and essential fatty acids 🙂

DSC05065

Yummy fries with some ketchup hidden in the back –

DSC05062

And the apple we shared –

DSC05063

We gobbled down dinner in 10 too-fast minutes and decided to go for a walk since I had 45 minutes until my class. Suddenly we found ourselves outside a coffee shop bar! I decided I needed some Brain Juice and we went inside. Although I made him order the beer and I just got a few big gulps, which probably equaled about 1/3 of it. It was fun and sneaky to have beer before class – just like the good ol’ college days 8)

DSC05068

We finished our walk and he dropped me off a the door of my classroom. He hears me talk about my classes all the time, but he’s never seen where the action is! But don’t worry, we didn’t hold hands or kiss goodbye. People might have thought we were high schoolers!

When Micro got out so early I stopped into the new Trader Joe’s I had yet to visit for some YOGURTS!!! I felt so metropolitan coming out of “work” late at night and going to TJ’s. Too bad I don’t live in a loft

 this !
I was going to get another tub of Euro too, but they were all out of the fat-free version of that! Bummer. At least they had my <3.

Time is flying by though. I have a big test in the morning so I should go over my notes on breastfeeding and infant/toddler nutrition once more, but I think I know it all! Perhaps just some reading in bed 🙂 More exciting news is that I don’t have my late class tomorrow, which means….LUNCH AT HOME!!!!!!!

Despite my huge dinner, I’m actually feeling a little hungry. I might have a snack. If I do you’ll see it tomorrow.

I’m planning a workout early tomorrow since I got home early tonight. G’night!

I would love to hear some insight from your breastfeeding/nutrition class–I have either been pregnant or breastfeeding since April 2003, and most things I’ve read have said that after 6 months of breastfeeding, the mother does not require any additional daily calories, but I don’t see how that could physically make sense.

I think this is the first time I’ve commented, but I love your blog–happy birthday!

    Amy ,
Not true at all – you need MORE calories after 6 mos of breast feeding!! The body produces between 25-30 oz of milk per day, which requires about 500 kcal to make. The recommendations are to consume an additional 330 kcal for the first 6 months, assuming you will draw in the wonderful motherly stored fat for the remaining 170. But after 6 months when (hopefully!) some of that fat is gone and you are also more active, the recommendation increases to 400 kcal. Let me know if you have any more specific questions 🙂

Hi Kath! Happy early B-day! I have a question for you and others. First of all, I have lost a significant amount of weight over the past six months or so. My doctor says I need to gain at least 20lbs to be at a healthy weight. Before I lost all of this weight I kind of had a “binge/closet” eating disorder. All of a sudden I took a complete turn and restricted myself from eating too much (it actually turned into eating too little). Currently I am seeing a psychologist to get myself back on track; however, I am beginning to turn into a closet eater again. I will sneak food any chance I get. I don’t know why I am doing this to myself because I feel so sick and guilty afterwards. Does anyone have any helpful tips or suggestions to get me through this? I would appreciate any help. Thanks so much!

    Hi Kath! Quick question..
I was going to buy some dates last night, but I looked on the ingredients list and it said “dates, inverted sugar.”

I had no idea what inverted sugar was so in fear of eating something like hfcs I decided not to get them. Should I be worried about this inverted sugar? Is it possibly just a syrup agent that they put on the dates so that they don’t expire too quickly? I have no idea! To buy or not to buy! Any insight?

You guys are too kind 😉

    michelle ,
Great step to see a Psychologist. Have you talked to him/her about this, or are you becoming secretive to even her? I’d get up the courage to bring it up at your next meeting, as I would assume she’d have the best solution. My best advice is always to read my inspirational books – SuperFoods and Fit From Within, as they were the most influential on my psyche during my weight loss and led to a complete mind-set change about food and eating.

    coco ,
We’re having some friends over for an Oktoberfest on Saturday 🙂 As for the BIG DAY, it’s kind of up in the air right now. I know the husband is making breakfast, we’re hoping to go hiking/picnicing and he’s making me dinner that night. And we’re opening a favorite saved bottle of red!

    Tara + Kim ,
Thanks! So glad KERF’s been a daily good read 😉

    Leah ,
Based on 30 seconds of skimming Wikipedia, it seems like inverted sugar is a sugar syrup with its disaccharides split and suspended by an acid and is used to keep the dates moist. I don’t think it’s much to worry about, but you could always look for dates in bulk, which should be just plain (and perhaps less moist).

Kath, A friend told me about your website and already I love it so much! Those sardine and salmon sandwiches are GOING to be made this weekend. I love your approach to eating and food, and find it really helpful. As someone who has recently lost 20 pounds (about 8 more to go) the way you have changed your eating is exactly what I did–without knowing you. Now I long for steamed brussel sprouts in the afternoon instead of cookies! Who would have believed it?

Thank you for being such a balanced and conscious example of living a good food life.
