You are here: Home / Weekend / Mother Nature Knows Best

March 2, 2010

Mother Nature Knows Best

When I got home I promptly put on jeans and a fleece, put my hair up and got to work on my presentation for Thursday. Worked hard all morning. If I’ve learned anything from the research on supplements vs. whole foods it’s EAT REAL FOOD. (As if I ever thought otherwise, but still!) The title of my presentation is “Mother Nature Knows Best” 🙂

I got home at 10:30 and since it had been 4.5 hours since breakfast, I had a snack. My stomach was rumbling but I can’t eat vegetables before noon! (‘Cept for pumpkin 😉 ) I think often the preference between mini meals vs. 3 square meals depends on your schedule. On days when I workout, have breakfast at 8:30, lunch at 12:30 and dinner at 6, I really only need 3 meals and a small snack at 4. But on days when I have to S P R E A D myself out – breakfast at 6, lunch at noon, dinner at 6-7, I really do need the snacks and mini meals work a lot better.

Since I didn’t have fruit at breakfast, I had fruit along with some almonds and trail mix for satiety.

Plus tea!

IMG_7116 (640x427)

My snack didn’t’ hold me over as long as I had hoped! I had lunch around 12:30.

IMG_7120 (640x427)

A Lentil Apple Walnut Muffin –

IMG_7129 (640x427)

Leftover roasted veggies over spinach

IMG_7124 (640x427)

And toast with Organic Valley cheddar and heated-up Crofter’s

IMG_7122 (640x427)

Mmmmmmm!!!

IMG_7126 (640x427)

More warmth (it was SNOWING HERE!!!)

IMG_7130 (640x427)

IMG_7119 (640x427)

My lunch was balanced and colorful, but I just didn’t feel satisfied after and my stomach felt weirdly empty. I could not get the word orange out of my head, so I went back for a tangelo for dessert. Did the trick!! Guess I needed some citrus in my life.

IMG_7132 (640x427)

STILL feel a little bit hungry and I just went to look at my calendar where I am now writing down some notes on my cycle and on February 2 I wrote “Starving.” Must be that time of the month!

Since my workday started at 6:30 this morning, I’m almost off the clcok, and after a few chores, I am headed to Emily‘s for a workout and a girl’s night dinner! I think she’s going to kill me with her new home gym!

I so want to be a dietitian too. Unfortunately that is not the track I chose.
I find that I do better with little snacks throughout the day. I wouldn’t call it small meals, because my breakfast, lunch, and dinner are still fairly substantial, but something like grapes and some cheese or a homemade granola bar.

The organization I work for has a wellness coordinator. To me her job sounds pretty fun. She schedules healthy activities employees can take part in each (from cooking, to lectures, and discounted sky passes or gym memberships). Every year if an employee earns 100 pts by completing various activities they can get a reduced rate on insurance. The idea is if the employee is healthier, they won’t have to spend so much on health care costs.

Those 100 pts were the only reason I had my blood drawn last year–I really hate needles! lol

My boss supported my department at work by beginning a 1 year long project where we have our own health coordinator, who gives us nutritional and exercise advice. We wear small monitors which show how many MET points we have earned during the day, the intensity of our daily exercise and so on. We had a meeting in the beginning with a doctor who examined us thoroughly and then everyone got a personal plan and goal for the next year. We are getting nearer to our 1 year check up and I must say it has made wonders! even those who absolutely hate doing sports (like me… but I’ve learned a lot during this year!) have gotten great results. I recommend this to all companies and I’m very thankful that my boss also thinks about the physical wellbeing of his employees.

One thing in your lunch jumped out at me – the cheese and jam on bread! I thought my 4 year old was the only one who liked that combination. In fact, just today at lunch he had a big slice of whole wheat bread topped with blackberry jam and slices of organic valley mozzarella. =)

I want to tell you how much your blog has inspired me. I also believe in eating real, whole foods and I think they are delicious. I love to eat oatmeal for breakfast and recently I tried making it with banana slices like you do in your demo video and it was delicious!
