KERF Gets Cool

OMG!! I am finally technologically cool!

IMG_6410 (1024x768)

Needless to say this guy has been occupying my attention all evening.

And as you also probably guessed, I am being so nerdy with the apps. I am not happy with the fact that ToDoist doesn’t have one yet! And I’d like to Sync my Google Calendar and haven’t figured out how yet (Googles Sync doesn’t seem to show up in my iTunes?) And I accidentally imported 1600 contacts from Gmail (everyone I have ever emailed!) and had to figure out how to delete them all and now I have zero contacts. And I was also disappointed to see that my version of WordPress is out of date to blog from the phone – just another reason I have GOT to upgrade WP. Zest, I need you help 🙁

But in a few days, this is is going to rock my socks off!

We spent over 2 hours getting our new phones and came home to discover something alive in the garage.

No, it wasn’t Gilbert the Garden Snake. It was two of these curious furry newborns…

IMG_6398 (1024x768) IMG_6401 (1024x768) IMG_6399 (1024x768)

By themselves they are super cute, but I am worried

1) That mom is nearby (they are too small/immobile to have come in by themselves, so I think they were born in the garage!)

2) Gilbert will return to eat them

I wanted Matt to take them outside, but he said they’d just die. But they’ll die inside too! What to do!?

We were planning a soup for dinner tonight, but because we arrived home late we needed something quicker. Matt requested kale chips! With them we assembled a super quick entree: egg sandwiches on fresh bread.

IMG_6408 (1024x768)

While we cooked, I made a virgin cocktail with diet tonic + cherry juice.

IMG_6397 (1024x768)

Chips were crunch and delish

IMG_6404 (1024x768)

We “fried” (just cooked in a skillet) the eggs and topped them with some cheese

IMG_6406 (1024x768)

Plus avocado on the sandwich

IMG_6405 (1024x768)

IMG_6402 (1024x768)

I’m tired now! I’ve been staying up so late lately. At least for fun reasons.

Nite!

Once you get all of your apps set up, I’d love to hear what fun ones you use! I have the ITouch Ipod and have NO apps which drives everyone I know crazy – I am sure that I would love them but I’m overwhelmed!

I don’t have an I-phone, but do have an I-pod touch that works about the same, minus the calling. I also use google calendar and if you just download the free google app. you can access it that way. I have not totally figured out how to fix things or alter the calendar from there, but I can view it and I am sure I can figure it out one of these days. Hope that helps a bit, sorry I am not quite totaly techy yet.

I’m dying for an iphone! I’m upgrading both my Apple laptop and phone before the fall semester, so I’m anxious to hear your thoughts! When I got my blackberry, I became a bit useless without it. It’s also daunting because I’m reachable by email, text, and phone all the time now 🙁 My husband and I now have a rule- no phones during meals because we’d NEVER stopped working! Good luck figuring out all the cool features!

Those babies are ADORABLE! We have 10 cats (yes, really) and they have brought home umpteen babies from nests. 🙁 We usually just try to put them back outside.

I wish I could get kale chips to turn out right. Every time I have tried to make them, they turn to dust when I pick them up. 😕

I’m surprised that, being such a Google-girl, you didn’t get an Android phone (like T-Mobile G1). Especially with the calendar, gmail and contacts all seamlessly integrated.

Were those things possums, mice, moles, or what?

I was thinking about submitting meals to you as a “Day in the life of an elite cyclist” and how I try to reach 3500 kcal/day but I realized I don’t have any decent cameras, plus there’s a good bit of what I eat that isn’t “Real Food” so I just said meh. Season 1 Disc 1 of Futurama just came via Netflix so I may crack a beer when I sit down to watch in honor of Kanz and the best TV theme song ever (first beer in 3 months!).

It’s a little hard to tell from the pic. If they are baby possums, I wouldn’t worry, the way their mamas carry them, they can drop them and not realize it, or they may be sick :(, she may have dropped them close to your house. But if they are mice/rat babies, yeah, you and Matt might want to consider having pest control come out and just check! That’s a problem you don’t want!

They actually do look a little cute, but don’t underestimate them — mice are disease-spreading rodents. And they multiply like crazy, so if you saw two, there could be many more in the walls (in my old apartment, I caught TEN.) You may want to make sure you keep all food in the fridge and cupboards until the problem is under control.

My favorite list ap is called Zenbe. You can make lists and sync them with lists Matt makes, and you can access them on the web as well as your phone. When you check something off, it moves to the bottom of your list and becomes a lighter color. It’s one of my favorite iphone aps!

This explains why Gilbert is so interested in your garage! Get rid of those mice and you’ll get rid of your snake problem.

When you actually SEE mice you’ve got a big problem. They do not like to come out during the day usually. The best thing to do unfortunately is to trap them (you probably don’t need an exterminator). Here’s a tip the LOVE peanut butter. Buy some paper lunch bags and ordinary traps. Put a little peanut butter on them when you set the trap and slide it into the bag setting the bag on the SHORT side. Sorry guys … I know it’s gross and killing any living thing is not nice, but mice carry a lot of disease and you don’t want them coming into your house.

If you store any edibles in your garage THROW THEM OUT or disinfect any cans or jars you can not part with. Good luck!

You’re right, those are not House Mice (Mus musculus), they are deermice (one of several Peromyscus species). You are in South Carolina, right? That means they could be white-footed, Oldfield, or cotton deermice. The most likely scenario, if they are out on their own like that, is that Gilbert or another predator already got the mama, and left the little (less energy-rich) babies behind.

  66. Cammy says

    May 21, 2009 at 12:10 am

Shrews are much smaller and have different proportions. They are semifossorial and so are very unlikely to be found in the house/garage; they need a soft substrate to burrow in and eat almost entirely insects, not grains like mice do. What you have are definitely juvenile deermice.

Hold on a sec — diet soda? I thought nutritionistas were supposed to be all anti-aspartame and artificial sweeteners? I don’t know… I’ve read a lot of evil stuff about those things, but of course sugar isn’t so hot, either. Actually, I think a good alternative is this new Pepsi Raw stuff, made with actual sugar rather than high-fructose corn syrup. Give it a Google and check it out 🙂
