How ‘Bout Some Oats

dsc07970.JPG

Mornin’ folks!Trail Mix Oats it was

 this !

Up and at ’em at 5 this morning – I feel MUCH better today. A tendon in my foot surgery foot has been bothering me (I think from too much walking when it was so nice last month (thanks, April!) but it finally feels much better too. I did 30 minutes on the Stairmaster this morning plus 10 on the Stat bike. Then I did free weights, combining lower and upper body. I like to get one of the aerobics steps and walk up and down it while I do biceps and shoulders – keeps my heart rate up and works the legs at the same time! I’m all about getting the lifting over as fast as I can, so whenever I can combine it makes me happy 🙂

I had a banana muffin top before I left. It was too moist for our toasted and kind of fell apart – I guess I’ll have to microwave it next time!

Funk

Our milk (which I think is going on a week and a half?) had a funky smell this morning. It didn’t smell sour, but it smelled kind of garbagey!? Well, we’d already made the coffee and the oatmeal by the time we figured it out, so we ate them anyways. There was no funky taste so it all tasted fine – it was just the carton. But we have moved on to our fresh half gallon we bought this week so you can rest easy that I will not be consuming any more funk.

Oats today were half milk, half water, 1 small whipped banana (divided by 2!), vanilla, flax, half a serving of trail mix (TJ’s Raspberry), a tsp brown sugar and a spoonful of crunchy peanut butter.

dsc07969.JPG

This breakfast was 450 kcal, 9 grams fiber and 20 grams protein with coffee.

dsc07968.JPG

I’ve got Chem Lab today, but it’s sort of a fluff one (no real lab, just business) so hopefully I’ll be done by 3. HOPEFULLY!!!

Tonight we’re going out for sushi with my mother-in-law. I took a peek at the menu and really want the Hawiaiian Tuna Roll – tuna and mango! I imagine we’ll share things, but I hope that one can be “my” roll 😉

Adios!

Can’t start the day without a bowl of one of your scrumptious oatmeal concoctions – love the trail mix variety!

Sorry about the muffin-top falling apart – definitely microwave it, for about 10 seconds, next time; and about the milk going bad?? All the more reason to drink hempmilk!! Doesn’t spoil so quicky!! :0)

    Enjoy your Wednesday!

    Stephanie ,
I had a fused joint – along with horrible arthritis as a result. I’ve never had the shots, but my doctor didn’t recommend them because he said they weakened an already-weak tendon (but I know a lot of doctors do recommend, so I wouldn’t worry). During my surgery recovery (and still every now and then) I had sore tendons from the trauma of the incision, and I always found the most relief from ice – 2-3 times a day. It HURTS to ice it, but it will feel so much better. Best of luck to a quick recovery!

    Hey Kath,
You know what I’ve found works BEST with soft things? Put it in the micro for like 10-15 seconds and then put it in toaster oven on foil. Before putting it in toaster, I like to turn the toaster up higher than I want it and then turn it down once the treat is in there! It works best for me!

Good luck with Chem Lab! And your Oatmeal looks like it’s from a lovely little Bed & Breakfast this morning! Especially with your grandmother’s beautiful China 🙂

Have a lovely day Miss Thang!

    Hey Stephanie,
I had cortisone shots in my lower back every 3 months while I did gymnastics. They did hurt a little intially, but afterwards the pain was relieved so much that the small, short pain the shots caused made it worthwhile. Hope that helps? I know it’s not the same as foot injuries, but I bet the shot is similar if not the same.

I have a question regarding Ezekiel breads. I just bought some Sesame bread, and of course it comes frozen. I’m assuming it needs to stay frozen until ready to use? Do you just toast it then or thaw it in the microwave? Just wondering! If anyone has answers, let me know…thanks!

JennS – I don’t think that’s very nutritionally sound – I doubt anyone on here will recommend that! You’re probably better off eating a balanced diet, heavy on fruits and veggies, but making sure to get grains, proteins, healthy fats as well 🙂

I do have a recommendation for all of you on the fence about getting a heart rate monitor. I have had the Polar F4 for about a month now, and I’ve always liked it – it’s great to have a reliable, accurate source to measure how hard you’re working and how many calories you’re burning. But I stumbled into a hidden benefit yesterday. There was amazing chocolate cake in my office yesterday afternoon and we got into a bit of a fight. 😛 Now, this wasn’t an occasional treat, because I had already had a tagalong and two organic cookies for a treat. So I was definitely over my limit with sweets. When I went to the gym yesterday evening, I did my normal routine and burned 430 kcal. Well, I was about to walk out when I realized, hey you know, I probably took in an extra 200 kcal, why not just burn off an extra 200?? Since I knew my calories and heart rate were accurate, I just hopped on a treadmill, watched the Biggest Loser, and before I knew it, I had burned an extra 200! I got home and realized I had been doing cardio for 70 minutes straight! It occurred to me that before I had my hrm, when I worked out according to time or the inaccurate machine calorie counts, I could never have done 70 minutes of cardio! It was totally mental. Having a hrm totally kept me focused to my goal and on track. Today, I have no food hangover (thank goodness!) – but quite the opposite – I feel fit and refreshed. Just a quick story – thanks for reading!

    JennS,

I think maybe you need to add some protein in there to keep your energy up. Will you be exercising in conjunction with the new food plan? If so, you’ll definitely need some protein. I think you’ll be missing a lot of various nutrients…..

My mom ate nothing but salads and fruits and she lost a lot of water weight – but she gained it all back as soon as she started to eat normally again.

Are you just trying to lose weight fast just for this one day? And then will you be going back to normal after that?

Your fruit/veggie plan could work for that temporary fix you may be looking for, but it’s not 100% healthy. But I know quick fixes are not always healthy. 😉

    Good luck! 🙂

    Kath,

I know you are well aware of how much we appreciate everything you do, but I just wanted to say thank you, yet again! I have recently hit my weight loss goal, – 72 lbs woohoo!, and last night had quite the mental revelation of how much I have changed not only physically, but more importantly mentally. I am just so overwhelmingly happier, healthier, stronger, and have let go of a lot of emotional baggage. Seeing you achieve such a healthy mental state every day is so encouraging to me! It helps me realize that I can stay this way forever too, and when I need that little bit of extra motivation, it is just a click away! Thank you for sharing your life with us in such an open way and for creating this community.

I hope you have a great day, even with the dreaded chem lab. Happy Hump Day!

    Hi everyone:
Jenn: Fruit and veggie fast is NOT a good idea. It might make you lose a bit of water weight, but it will also make you weak and put your bosy into starvation mode. You would be soo much better off eating 1200 calories a day and upping cardio and stregth training to build muscle which burns more calories at rest.

Re butternut squash: Make SURE you poke holes in it with a fork or cut it in half!! About a week ago i attempted to make spagetti squash in the microwave…and it exploded! I mean blew off the micowave door and sqush was everywhere! Be Careful!!

I put my bread in the fridge and it does just fine.

    Lindsay –

AGREED! The same thing happened to me with a spaghetti squash and I did poke holes in it! You have to be sure that the holes go all the way into the meat of the squash and are not just on the surface… if you don’t see oooze coming out of the holes you poke, they’re not deep enough and it will explode! It made this loud noise and scared my dog and I shrieked… looking back, it was very funny, at the time, I was so mad!

Katers – I could NOT AGREE MORE!!!! I found the same exact thing. I got my HRM (Polar F6) about 2 months ago and not only is it helpful to see how hard you’re working, but it totally does make me go the extra mile! OR, sometimes at night when I’m not hungry but craving a treat, I’ll think okay, I burned 400 cal (or however many) in the gym today, do I want to waste half of that on a treat that will be gone in 2 seconds? Probably not!

On a side note: For KATH and all HRM users…..how do you burn so many calories? I generally go to the gym for 60-70 minutes after work and work out HARD!!!! Mostly cardio for that time and am huffing and puffing, but will only have burned 300-375 calories… 🙁 Kath, I see a lot of times you work out for around an hour and burn 450+! Any secrets? I’m 5’2″ and about 130 so I’m slightly bigger than Kath as well….

I still think losing 11 pounds in one week (like Ali last night, who is now at a healthy weight) is a little crazy…not realistic at all! I just wanted to add a comment about the HRM. I got mine for my birthday 2 months ago and I love it!! I agree it helps me push myself a little bit harder and go that extra mile. I find it also helps me on days when I do less intense workouts because I see that I am still burning calories even though I don’t feel as though I am working hard. One person who doesn’t like it is my dog…when I see my heart rate start dropping we have to speed up!! Poor pup!! I apologize for the long post, but I also have a question for other HRM users: I am still confused about what range I should be in, it seems lately my HR has been really high or out of range (around 168) is this bad? I know there is information out there on the web…but I just get confused (I’m an idiot)
Thanks for the great blog! M

    JennS ,
I agree with the others that just fruits and veggies is not the way to go. Your body NEEDS fats and proteins – and is designed to digest and absorb them – so by not consuming them you are depriving your body of what it needs to function optimally. Rather than cut out food groups, try to eat as wholesomely as you can and minimize all artificial ingredients. Eat foods with nutrition labels that contain less than 5 ingredients – or foods with no nutrition labels – like preparing some dry lentils or beans for plant-based protein.

    Gretchen ,
We keep ours in the fridge so it thaws out and can use a slice at a time easily. I usually toast or microwave it if I’m going to eat it right then, or let it come to room temp in my lunch box.

    Katers ,
I totally agree on the HRM being your own “trainer.” It pushes you to work hard and gives motivation!

    Lesli ,
Thanks so much for your great feedback – and CONGRATS on reaching goal!!! 72 pounds – wow!

    Melissa ,
I’m usually at about 250 after 30 minutes of cardio. If I do more hard cardio, I can break 400 but if I do weights, I’m often at 350-400 when I leave. Today was 380 burned when I left after an hour (did Stat bike, which is lower intensity plus weights). So your numbers sound good!

    Laura ,
I didn’t sprain it – it just sometimes gets stiff for a few days if I’m on my feet a lot as a result of my surgery. No worries!

    Nick ,
I added you as well – because of your rockin’ recipes 🙂

Hey guys, I asked a question awhile ago about the HRM but no one saw it 🙁 I want to get one, but does the F4 come with the calorie counting feature, or do you have to buy the chest strap separately to get that? I looked it up on Amazon and it looked like the wrist montior itself didn’t do calorie counts; for that you had to ALSO purchase the chest trap. Is that true? See, you’re not the only one confused, Michelle!

The strap comes with the watch. It fits right under the band of your sports bra, you don’t even notice it. And yes, it counts calories, and heart rate. Calories burned is determined by your heart rate, so they go hand in hand.

    Hallie,
The chest strap comes with it, or atleast mine did, its where the heart rate monitor actually is, the watch shows you your heart rate, calories, etc. Without the strap, it is simply a watch.

rachel k, do you have bad allergies? Sometimes during this time of year I have experienced nausea because the pollen is so intense and triggers my allergies. Not to be graphic but if you are having a lot of sinus drainage due to allergies it can irritate your stomach. For me it’s worst when i have an empty stomach and sometimes the combination of the drainage and driving/riding in a car makes it worse too. You could try an antihistamine to dry you up and see if that helps? Hope you feel better!

Jumping in about heart rate monitors. I have an F6 and I totally agree with everyone. I love it! At first I obsessed a little about the calorie counts but now I usually don’t switch it to check until the end. I just love knowing I’m “in the zone.”
Michelle in SC, my heart rate gets into the higher zones all the time, but I’ve read that’s ok as long as you don’t stay there too long or do two days in a row where you keep it high. Twice a week I jump rope between ab exercises and sometimes right after jumping I will be in the 180 zone, but it drops back down during abs. I really have no scientific backing but I would say it’s ok!

Sorry, long post! They always seem to end that way!

    Rachel K,
I know Kath’s already posted her lunch post, so hopefully you check back & read this- but I had exactly what you had for a long time. Doctor’s took about 1/2 of my blood testing different things to figure out what was wrong. Although nothing medical was discovered, the timing of me feeling it ended up being around Christmas, and when I went home for the holidays it went away. My personal belief is that my constant nauesa was caused by stress-I was really stressed out with school & working & my first year of living in an apartment. I still get it sometimes when I’m not listening to my body and stressing out about how busy I am. I find the best thing I can do is take a night (incredibly hard when you feel super busy but it is necessary sometimes) and do something really relaxing. I find it can’t just be sitting and watching tv for me, because then I just tune out my body further. The best thing for me is to take a walk outside, then take a long bath while reading, and listening to “Sigur Ross” and writing in my journal.
Good luck and hopefully this helps

Trail mix oatmeal… it always looks so good Kath!

Enjoy your sushi tonight, sushi is my favorite thing to order out since I can’t make it! I’ve never actually attempted to make it, I’m a little intimidated.

On the hrm I have the f4 polar and I discovered, long after having it for awhile, that it does not have owncode. That means if you exercise next to someone who is wearing a hrm your monitor will lock on to their heartrate and read it as being your own. I’m going to get another one but I just wanted to let those of you know who have the same model. Also, I use to get (and still do sometimes) about how many calories I burn but now that i’m at lifetime (gym) they are all about working in your target heartrate zone. For example, working anerobically you burn sugar and working aerobically you burn fat and so forth. But you don’t want to work anerobically more than twice a week. Hope this helps someone.

Hey Kath! I have a question about dried fruit. I am in the process of trying to gain some healthy weight and my dietician recommended incorporating dried fruit into a granola for breakfast. I usually eat a piece of fruit (pear, banana etc..) and I have been upping portions of cereal, where I usually get really full and feel gross. So she advised me to dense up my meals. I went out and got some good granola that is low in sugar (Mona’s Granola) but I was hesitant to buy dried cherries and such because of how much sugar was in them. I feel that putting that much sugar would not be good for my body. What do you suggest? SHould I just keep the natural fruit? I would just like to get your opinion. Thanks Kath!

    Regan,
Not being a dietitian yet, I don’t know if my opinion counts nearly as much as your R.D’s! But I do agree with her that calorie-dense foods are the smartest way to gain weight without having to feel full all the time or eat huge portions. The sugars in dried fruit (given that they are not sweetened – check the ingredients list) are natural so I see nothing wrong with them, especially since you are eating them along with a balanced breakfast of food groups. So as long as your dried fruit is just dried fruit and not sweetened (eg. Craisins are sweetened) then then as a dietitian in training, I agree 🙂
