Hot Spot On A Cold Day

Hi guys.

We’ve got pouring rain outside and are hovering around 33*. GUF. My commute in was quite the mess!

I’ve been working at the computer all morning but lunch was super fun to make it up πŸ™‚

I brought in some bread and toasted it up in the office kitchen oven for the group. They love the GH bread! I had some on-its-last-day Dakota and a Cherry Rye loaf.

We “ordered in” from the elementary school just down the street. They had some allstars on the line today: sweet potatoes baked with cinnamon and sugar, fresh pineapple and a big green salad. I drizzled the salad in a little olive oil packet from Subway.

Last on my plate was Dannon greek yogurt! I found it at Harris Teeter and since i’m on a sampling rampage this week put it in my cart to try. Unlike Yoplait, this guy was great. Almost identical to Oikos in nutr stats, texture and flavor (but lacking the awesome company behind the label!)

Lunch was awesome and filling!

Brought from the cafeteria were some Breakfast Cookies leftover from… breakfast! These are whole grain and high fiber. Definitely an improvement from sugary cereal or biscuits. But still not totally low in sugar, and the added fiber apparently is rather… rough on system of the Child Nutr Dept staff πŸ™‚ I broke off a bite to taste. Not bad! It was too sweet for my palate but I’m sure the kids love them.

Can’t wait to start the weekend!

Ugh…I hate weather like that. Hope it clears up for you soon!!

I love that the kids have at least a few healthier choices to pick from in school. I hope that schools around my area pick up on that vibe too…it’s so important to teach healthy eating at a young age!

It is cool to see a huge improvement in what schools are serving. While I agree, we have a long way to go…it sure is better than the questionable-pizza-friday I remember eating in school. I swear it wasn’t really pizza but I can’t tell you exactly what it was!

I’m intrigued with the cherry rye bread…yum! These meals look a LOT different than what I had in school. Glad to see more nutritious options are offered. There was a report recently about the poor nutrional stats of the food offered by the Chicago Public school system and even when other options were offered the kids didn’t tend to take those. Sad!

I know! I’m starting to wonder if this rain is EVER going to let up! Your lunch looks yummy as always, and I saw that new yogurt in the grocery store but I’m such a Oikos devotee I was scared to venture out and try it πŸ˜€ Bring on the weekend!! Your oatmeal breakfast should be fun, I’m excited

Have a safe trip home tonight! Do they use any artificial sweeteners to lower the sugar in the cookies? Or just sugary from real sugar?

Sorry to hear about the gross weather! Hope it clears up before you head home. Does the yoplait greek yogurt have the same texture as oikos? I’ve found that different brands (i.e. fage, chobani, etc.) have slightly different textures.

Ugh, we’re getting all snow up ‘north’ here in DC…but yay for snow days!

You can feel a little better about Dannon as a company…it’s part of Groupe Danone, which is actually doing some innovative stuff. Sustainability initiatives aside, it’s helping to create solutions to malnutrition around the world. (http://www.muhammadyunus.org/Social-Business/grameen-danone/) I work in CSR/sustainability, so I’m a real geek for stuff like this. πŸ™‚

Just wanted to tell you that after your carmel creme tea last week I ordered some from The Tea Spot (along with some others to try), and the original shipping quote was 1/2 the price of the order ($11 for $21 worth of merchandise – and btw I live in Alaska). Now tea since is not exactly perishable, nor heavy, plus they said right on their that shipping was $5 flat for continental US (and Alaska is on the same continenent) I emailed them complaining about them charging me twice as much – and requiring me to us UPS rather than US Mail. I was flat annoyed! Anyway a very nice gal emailed me back and after a couple of back and forths, she agreed to send my order by US Mail Flat Rate Box. So they’re back on my “I might order from them again” list. I also pointed out the continental thing to her and suggested that they meant contiguous states. πŸ™‚ I hope I like the tea. I also got the chocolate one you had this morning, and a tuffy infuser.

And they’re not the only ones who charge a premium to ship to Alaska (and Hawaii). Amazon sends books and stuff fine, but won’t send any “grocery” items, even if they’re non-perishable. And honestly, our mail gets here 3-5 days from most places in the US.

I am predicting it will take aprox 8 months for Idaho to get Greek Yogurt made by Dannon and Yoplait.
Only 1 store in the area carries Fage or Oikos, and I’ve never seen a chobani.

Since you love Greek yogurt so much, you should seek out Greek Gods yogurt. Whole Foods carries it…the best Greek yogurt I’ve ever had! 6g of protein, too.

I already had some of the yoplait greek yogurt in my fridge when you gave a negative review of it. I nervously tried it and I didn’t experience any gritty texture or overly-tangy taste. I once had a chobani that was gritty so maybe your yoplait was just “off”? Also adding straight up canned pumpkin and sweet potato puree has made my yogurt gritty in the past. The only thing that freaked me out about the yoplait was the fact that it contains gelatin. Ew!

That could definitely be it. But I think the gelatin did have something to do with it.
