Goin’ Cajun

It’s been a leisurely morning ‘round here. I started with some blog reading in bed, then did 20 minutes of Power Vinyasa Flow #2 and came down for some oatmeal. Yum, yum.

I used my French placemats in honor of NOLA!

Oats were tasty:

IMG_6072 (1024x768)

The mix:

  • 1/3 cup oats, 1/3 cup milk, 1/2 cup water
  • 1 fig
  • 1 tbsp dried raspberries
  • 1 tsp brown sugar (for fun)
  • 1 tbsp flax
  • AgavePlus Granola
  • A few blackberries
  • Spoonful Jif Natural (still not a fan but I was in the mood for PB)

Chandelier Spring Blend coffee

Since I’ve been having more summery breakfasts – yogurt, smoothies, etc., I realized how this oatmeal/coffee combo really doesn’t make me feel as good and energized as the others. I blame it 90% on the coffee though – oats are pure and innocent! But this did leave me wishing I’d had something fresher.

The New Orleans trip is to celebrate Matt’s brother Andrew’s graduation from Tulane. We’re going with Karen and will be there thru Sunday. I went to NOLA once when I was in high school – 10 years ago!? (I can’t believe I am old enough to say I went somewhere 10 years ago.) I’m excited to eat some Cajun food and perhaps a crawfish or two! And I’m hoping to meet up with Gena too!!

The week after next week, we’re continuing the graduation celebration on a cruise to Bermuda! Which brings me to a….

Call For Photos!

I am not sure of my blogging capabilities on the cruise ship, but I am going to take the week off of formal food dairy blogging. I’ve posted every meal I’ve eaten since September 2007, so I’m going to take this week as my first KERF vacation. You’ll definitely see a few posts from me during that week, and you know I won’t be able to resist sharing some of the food and fun, but I’m not going to post a detailed dairy day-by-day. So to keep you entertained, I am lining up a few guest posts. And I’d like to include some of your favorite eats!

If you’d like to be featured on KERF, please send me a photo of your meal with a paragraph description of what’s in it. Plus your name, city and blog if you have one. Please make sure the photos aren’t blurry or I won’t be able to post them! Send me an email to [email protected] with the subject line: GUEST POST.

Going to pack! Clean! Workout!

What a gorgeous placemat, and NOLA is going to be a MAJOR blast!! I try to change breakfasts with the seasons; it just feels more “right”. 🙂 Oats in the winter, smoothies and fruit and yogurt in the summer.

Hmm, guest posting sounds super intriguing!

your breakfast does look great, but I agree oats and coffee make me feel super heavy in the summer and not refreshed like smoothies.

I hope you have a safe trip to NOLA! 🙂

I can’t eat oats unless it’s cooler outside. I live in Florida so the heat is just craziness and it makes any warm food seem scary. Ha.

I just got back from a 7 day cruise! I agree with taking the week off to enjoy your time and your food. I am interested to hear about how you handle the cruise food….I mean 24 hour pizza yeah! I think I did fairly well on my trip but still came home all puffy and just not feeling right with my body. I think it is all the extra sodium mixed with the extra mojitos!! But boy was it a great trip! Also, being from New Orleans…enjoy your trip!! You can’t get that food anywhere else no matter how people try to replicate it. It really is so original and delicious! I am headed there in June and can already taste the crawfish. Have a safe and fun trip! Laissez les bons temps rouler!!!

NOLA is the best. There is nothing like it. I live an hour and a half away in Hattiesburg and we go all the time. If you are looking for a good place to eat around Tulane, try Fresco on Maple St. They have tons of great and interesting food.

    http://www.frescocafe.us/menu.html

If you are in the Quarter, try Maspero’s for some good Southern food or Mother’s for the BEST po-boy you’ve ever had in your life (but be prepared to wait!).

Just FYI – cruise internet can be really expensive (I want to say $0.50 a minute or something – I can’t remember exactly) so I didn’t blog at all when I was on my cruise. But if you have a chance while you’re actually in Bermuda as opposed to on the ship then maybe you don’t have to worry about the ridiculous cost 🙂

I live in NOLA and am sharing my top 5 restaurant choices so you have them, jic:
    1. Stella
    2. August
    3. Lilette
    4. Patios
    5. Gautreaux’s

Commanders, Antoines, K Paul and Galatoires are also delicious and worth the “experience”.

There are some good neighborhood dives and other spots for some ‘must try’ fare while in NOLA:
    1. Domilises (for a poboy)
    2. Casamentos (for oysters)
    3. Central Grocery (for muffelatta)
    4. Crawfish (either pick it up at Little Fisherman and take it to the park/fly or go to Frankie and Johnnys – unless you can find someone having a boil)
    5. Cafe DuMonde (nothing good about them but the taste)

    Then there are the bars:
    1. Pimms cup at Napoleon House
    2. Any sort of coctail at The Columns
    3. Purple Monster at Lafittes Blacksmith
    4. Absinthe at Old Absinthe House
    5. Any sort of coctail at the carousel bar in the Hotel Monteleon (because that’s where Faulkner used to drink when he lived in NOLA)

The food and beverage choices are overwhelming and you could take weeks to test it all out but this sort of narrows down the high-points for you.
