Drunk On Coffee

Whoa – it’s been 4-5 days since I last had coffee and I had two small cups today and my blood is racing and I feel kinda tipsy. Not sure I like this….

Today has been like a lazy Saturday here – breakfast + TV. We watched The Office – love it! And then some Conan O’Brien, which is the other KERF household show. The husband watches the previous night’s episode almost every morning (or afternoon if he’s gone!).

We attended Jan’s baby shower over breakfast today. I only wish I could have enjoyed some of Phillis’s sheet cake too!

Oatmeal was scrumptious:

  • 1/3 cup oats, milk, water
  • 1/2 medium banana
  • 1 tsp maple syrup (stirred in)
  • 3 tbsp homemade Maple Pecan Granola
  • Spoonful AB

#2. I still can’t believe I really weaned myself off of all sweeteners in coffee and tea. It almost happened by accident! I just stopped putting Splenda in one day and never looked back. Again, it’s all about perspective. Rather than missing the sweetness, just assume coffee isn’t supposed to be a sweet drink. Now I enjoy the contrast from my super sweet banana oatmeal.

I really should do some school work this morning. We’re planning a trip to the gym in a while. It’s always hard to go when the weather is cloudy 🙁 Today’s weather is going to be drab, but luckily all should pass through to leave sunshine for tomorrow. We were hoping to go hiking today on our “Saturday” but instead in honor of the rainy day we’re going to go see a matinee of Nights in Rodanthe at the theater! I <3 Nicholas Sparks and read the book many years ago.

Happy Friday 8)

    Hey Kath,

Today I was reading your last few posts and thought to myself every few sentences: “Me too!”

I can’t live without TJ Greek Yogurt and would be so sad if it ever got discontinued. But I doubt it would, since it’s always running low or completely out when I go.

    LOVE The Office too!

I love Nicholas Sparks…I read almost every one of his books and cried every time. haha…i’m a big ol’ sap! Let us know how Nights in Rodanthe is. Have a nice time! 🙂

    Bundle up, it’s getting chillier!

I can’t believe Jan had the baby with out telling Micheal! It makes me wonder if she was ever really pregnant in the first place?!?!

Sounds like you had a wonderful relaxing morning. My weekend is almost thankfully here as well.

I stopped sweetening my coffee when I gave up artificial sweeteners a couple of years ago. Though I do enjoy the occasional junk latte 🙂

I’m the same way with coffee. So when I do drink it, I make it half caf.. half reg and half decaf.. makes it less intense

Way to go on kicking your splenda habit! I definitely still view coffee as something sweet – I think it will take me a while to ween off.

Have a nice day! Looks like it’s off to a great start 🙂

Nights in Rodanthe was a tearjerker! I read the book right after it came out, but forgot the ending until… the end. And then the memory came back and I started crying before the sad parts even started!

It’s a good movie.. I think it even forced a tear out of my husband 🙂

    Hi Kath,
I never get a chance to comment but I love love love your blog…I read a few but your blog is my favorite and I check it regularly.
Fun fact, I also graduated from highschool in ’01 and college in ’05. I was accepted to Davidson but didn’t end up going… to bad I think we could have been friends.
I decided to comment today re: trader joe’s yogurt. I love the greek 0% and usually go through 3-4 a week (I eat it every day). I went for my usual trader joe’s trip Sunday and when I didn’t see it I went to the customer service counter and the guy working there told me that it has been temporally recalled. He told me the reason for the recall was it did not pass the weights and measures test, there should be qty two one cup servings however when it was tested most containers had more. My response was wow, I read a lot of food blogs and havent heard about this. The guy laughed and asked me what a food blog was.
Now that I am commenting I have 2 other questions I wanted to ask:
    1. Have you ever tried KIND bars? I got a kind fruit & nut bar instead of picking up my usual apple pie lara bar at TJ’s on Sunday and like the feel as though they are just as filling and almost as healthy (a few more ingredients) as lara bars but never read about them on food blogs. Is there something I am missing?
    2. I think I really like your blog because I am very similar to you. I gained about 15 pounds during college (drinking socializing around food) and lost it slowly after. I am now 5’6’’ and about 134. Unlike you I track my net calories most days, I think I eat a couple hundred less calories then you (on a normal non special day) but I also don’t work out as hard. My problem is when I do a hard spinning class or a long run I am ravenous. I would like to train for a half marathon but fear that I would gain weight. I know this is stupid but I would like to maintain my weight and step up my workouts. Any advise?

    Sorry for the short novel.
    Thanks for the great blog!

When I drink it it makes me feel SO overheated and dehydrated, I hate it! Eww… You’re such a daredevil, I know (so it’s hard for you not to want to rip shots w/ the coffee– Chase em with espresso) but be careful! 😉

    kath and other coffee addicts:

i’m sitting here drinking Roastaroma, which is this herbal tea (so no caffeine) that’s described as “a rich and full-bodied alternative to black tea or coffee”.
basically it’s fake herbal coffee, and with some soymilk it’s not bad at all.
i’m trying to cut caffeine for the jitteriness / unhealthy-after effects reasons too… i’d be interested to see you try it out!

My BF doesn’t understand my need to sweeten coffee, he says if it was meant to be sweet the beans would be sweet by themselves. He’s probably right but I just don’t care for bitter things (yes, even beer)

I still like my coffee sweet – I’ve tried to ween myself, to no avail.

I use sugar free creamers – maybe 2 tablespoons per cup? Lots of good flavors out there too!

i did the same with coffee. except i went from spenda to going to sugar (koz splenda tastes really odd in coffee) eventually i just realized i drink coffee for comfort (smell/warmth) and for purpose (to stay awake) not necessarily for taste. now, instead, sometimes i add a dash of cinnamon to replace my tsp of sugar and it does a far better job of masquerading the bitter taste of a [poorly] brewed cup of coffee, and i’ve never looked back.

The same thing happened to me with Splenda. I only use the tiniest amount of agave nectar in my coffee now… and if I use flavored soy/hemp milk, I usually don’t use any at all.

    Meghan (another Meghan),
    Thanks!

I love KIND bars and agree they meet my nutritional standards, but I don’t enjoy the texture and eating them as much as LaraBars. And I think they are a little too sweet sometimes. But they are a find choice. The coconut ones are my favorite!

You should definitely not fear weight gain and training for a half marathon! As long as you are not taking in more energy than your body needs, you won’t store fat. You might literally gain some weight, but it will most likely be muscle from the extra training. Sounds like a time to put away the scale and go by how you feel. Remember all the other benefits that come from training for and running a race! You don’t want to miss out on those.

    zestycook ,
Never even tried coffee!? EVER!?!? Wow. I think it’s like alcohol – if you don’t drink it, no reason to start, but if you do, enjoy!

    sarah ,
I have always seen that in the grocery store but have been afraid to try it. Thanks for the review!

    Best Soy Latte,
    I LOVE the pumpkin butter!

    Katie ,
I got mine off of Craig’s list, so I really don’t even know the brand without going into the garage to look. It’s a 24″ women’s bike under $50 – those were my qualifications 🙂
