Combo Meal

I’ll have the #4 please: herring with jalapeno grit cherry honey salad.

IMG_3632Blog-2

Early lunch today because I’m joining Matt for a 1PM meeting. And a weird one at that!

IMG_3618Blog-2

Smoked Herring Salad

[herring are just like sardines – maybe even better!?] – made with carrots, celery, mayo, mustard and curry powder. I had intended to put this ON my salad, but I decided to keep them separate. Where are tortilla chips when you need them!

IMG_3623Blog

Spicy Grit Salad

Random mix of flavors – but they worked! Lettuce + arugula, dressed in olive oil and honey with lavender salt. Plus dried cherries, jalapenos, bleu cheese and pieces of congealed grits from the other night’s dinner!

IMG_3631Blog-2

IMG_3621Blog

IMG_3627Blog

This whole post – from shoot to photo uploading and editing to blogging took me just 10 minutes! I’m getting good at this job!

😉

Adios!!

There is nothing like dried cherries in a salad, in my opinion. So insanely delicious! Now I’m craving jalepenos…

Wow – ten minutes! Impressive. My brother and husband were making fun of me last night for stealing their bowls of soup to photo for a post later this week. I am not nearly as fast yet; I think we are having to get used to cold food ’round here ; )

I am willing to try sardines one day, but herring? no thanks. I worked at a Nursing Home for a few years and Pickled Herring was a super popular snack — the look and smell was too much for me!

I hate to rain on your parade, and congrats on the quick post, but that lunch just sounds gross. I think it’s “try it to believe it” kind of meal. You lost me at herring and then again with cherries with Jalapenos.

I was lost at “congealed grits.” I know they were just leftover grits but the “congealed” part is really unappetizing.

I’m a huge fan of herring, though, especially pickled herring on crackers!

Wow what timing!! That is certainly a mix I never would have thought of but it looks tasty, just like everything else you make! I’ve seen herring a few times (ever since you introduced me to the world of sardines!) and have been thinking about trying a can out to see if I like it. Do you mash them up just the same as you would with sardines?

I’m eating sardines for lunch right now! I bought a few packs at Whole Foods after reading about them on here. The “congealed grits” made me laugh. Maybe you weren’t trying to be funny, but that is the perfect description of the consistency of leftover grits!

I had a bunch of cilantro that caught my eye when I opened the veggie drawer. I knew it was lonely, since it had already served its purpose in guacamole. I’m a cilantro fan (though I know it is a love it or hate it taste). I pulled some off and tossed in the spinach base of my salad… delicious.

Herring reminds me of my grandfather, because he eats pickled herring on triscuits with onion and mustard! I have always been his guinea pig, as I am the only one in the family who will try anything. And it’s really good! I also had delicious herring at a Swedish bar in NYC. I may have to recreate your herring salad!
