Breaking Oat News

G’afternoon y’all!

After nutrition class this morning I was successful at my walk + study session. I walked at the indoor track for about an hour while memorizing my last few flashcards for today’s midterm. I am able to focus more when walking and studying because there is less distraction than when I sit at a table and people walk. My leggins are a little tired, so I’m guessing it was a good workout too.

I ventured back up to my academic building’s lounge to dine and catch up on blogs around noon.

The lunch centerpiece was half an amazing Pumpkin Bagel from my Aunt Donna’s Hot Bagel Company in Oakridge, TN. If you’re ever in Tennessee, you must stop in and say hello! They make the best chewy bagels. And this pumpkin one did not disappoint! (Karen brought us a few back from her weekend trip there).

I topped the half with pumpkin butter (which was mostly absorbed overnight) and AB.

My friend and carpool buddy Kelsey raves about Nancy’s yogurt and brought me some to try this morning. I swapped out my Chobani to give it a taste test with lunch.

DSC05026

It was good, but I still like greek and TJ’s Euro more!

Here’s my overall yogurt ranking if I had to live off one kind for the rest of my life (all are plain except Chobani, which I feel is worth its own sugar, and Stonyfield FOTB for it’s Costco price)

  • TJ’s Greek
  • Chobani (first plain, then peach, then blueberry, then strawberry, then vanilla)
  • Fage
  • TJ’s European
  • Emmi Swiss
  • Oikios
  • Nancy’s
  • Brown Cow
  • Stonyfield Fruit on the Bottom
  • Stonyfield plain

I also packed some leftover roasted veggies, which I ate cold –

And an orange, which I peeled on site –

Holy Quaker!!

I write with the very exciting news that I have been invited to join The Quaker Oatmeal Living Proof Weekend, an all expenses paid trip to Quaker’s National Headquarters in Chicago with 15 other health and food bloggers (including Jenna!!) November 7-9.

Weekend highlights include: interviews with the Quaker staff and an R.D., roundtable discussions, dinner with the other bloggers and an Oatmealpalooza Breakfast Bar!! I’ll be asking for your ideas and questions about all-things-Quaker oats before the trip. You can only imagine how excited I am considering my love for oatmeal.

In celebration of the upcoming weekend, Quaker has offered to giveaway a goodie pack to 3 KERF readers. The products include Old Fashioned Quaker Oats (the best!), Quaker Instant Oatmeal, Quaker Oatmeal To Go and Quaker Oatmeal Squares (and old favorite of mine I haven’t had in years).

To enter the giveaway, leave a comment on this post by my dinner post tonight and I’ll draw 3 comment numbers from a hat this evening to announce sometime tomorrow.

Off to spit out Foodservice information!

I think TJ’s Greek yogurt tastes the most like sour cream and unlike fage, I can’t just eat it plain, although I do use it as a sour cream substitute. I just love Fage.

TJ is at the top of my plain yogurt list too, esp for the price!! (I also love their individual-size chocolate, mocha, and matcha green tea…!) Another plain (not Greek-style) yogurt you might want to try is Cascade Fresh. I think it has relatively more protein than other plain yogurts http://www.cascadefresh.com/index.html and I usually get it at Whole Foods, but according to the website, it’s carried at Earthfare and Lowes Foods as well.

And hey– apparently, you’re getting TWO Whole Foods in the near future… Elizabeth Ave & Hawthorn and Sharon Rd & Colony Rd

I love quaker oatmeal squares but they are way too expensive!! What dietitians don’t make up for in salaries, we make up for in free food samples that companies send us (to promote, but hey, if they’re good, the samples sometimes come home too). Pumpkin bagels?! Yummm… I am in Georgia, so I may have to make a weekend trip to the north just for one of your aunt’s yummy bagels. I just handed out pumpkin donuts I picked up from my local grocery store to my first graders. It’s the 50th day of school and “Zero the Hero” visits and brings in a treat in the shape of a zero (pineapple rings, cheerios, bagels, donuts, cookies, lifesavers, funyun chips, etc.) The kids raved about their pumpkin donuts so much that I broke down and ate one too. It was muy delish! P.S. I’m a three times a day reader and oatmeal addict and if it helps to know I’m a poor (just bought my first house and getting married in November) young teacher who buys many things for my class all the time to win the contest, then here I am pouring out my soul to you to please, please, pick me!! 🙂

Congrats on the trip! I’ve been reading your blog for a couple of months, and I’ve loved making your oatmeal on weekend mornings. Last weekend I even made some (with just oats, water, banana and cinnamon) for my 8-month old daughter, and she loved it too! My 3-year old son has been eating it as well.

A question for you- I would love to prepare some oatmeal on the weekend to have during the week. I like putting the banana in b/c it makes it nice and sweet without having to add other sweetener. Do you wait and add the banana on the day you’re eating so it doesn’t turn brown? Any hints you have would be great!

    Congrats again on the trip!

I should add for all you foodie teachers out there that “Zero the Hero” doesn’t bring all those things in on the 50th day… today happened to be the donuts, but he brings in something on every day of school that ends in zero, like 10, 20, 30, etc. On the 100th day, he brings in a bundt cake shaped like a big zero to share with the class.

    Hi Kath!
Congratulations on being selected to attend the Quaker event! That’s so exciting!
I absolutely LOVE Quaker oatmeal and it’s all because of you! Once I saw the chewy, gooey deliciousness of your banana-marshmallow oatmeal on the blog, I had to try it. One taste and I instantly became addicted – both to Quaker and to your blog! Believe it or not, I was 32 before I ever tried oatmeal – and now I sometimes eat it for all three meals! I would love to be selected as one of your lucky winners. I’m already addicted to both Katheats and Quaker, so I’ve got to support my habit!

The weight control fourmla keeps me full way longer then just a normal pack of instant oats (protein & fiber) Now that I read your blog and have a kitchen it doesn’t compare to kath oats. Quacker was giving away the Oatmeal to go bars at my gym last week….very sweet…and I usually like sweet things.

Hi Kath…are any of the Quaker events open to the public? I live in Chicago, and my favorite event this summer was “Flavor Fest,” a Whole Food sponsored event where there were dozens and dozens of tents giving out free samples of natural and organic foods. I got enough goodies to last me three months!

Also, are you and Jenna open to a blog reader get together like a meal or a jog? Or are your schedules pretty packed? (And it’s not too cold to run outside just yet–I just got back from a refreshing run down by the lake).

I was wondering how you liked organic compared to gen? My teacher is HORRIBLE for gen, he literally is only at the university to do research!!! He could care less about students. Therefore, I’m excited to move on to organic next semester! I’ve heard it’s hard, but I was just wondering if you think people exaggerate how hard it really is!

    Amandamoo-
Not sure if you’ll see this since there’s a ton of comments, but just wanted to say I’ve had the Greek Gods yogurt! I thought it was delicious, however the ingredient list kinda bothered me. The reason it’s sooo creamy is they put CREAM in it! I haven’t been able to find the low-fat versions, so the full-fat yogurt PLUS the cream makes for quite a bit of saturated fat. It is very tasty though!

offer free oatmeal and we shall post! i think everyone’s coming out of the woodwork on this one! but i still hope i win 😉 thanks for your ratings on the different yogurt brands; my store doesn’t offer most of those, so i like to know what else is out there and what’s good. i just had my first oikos today, honey flavored, and i didn’t care for the honey in it too much, but LOVED the texture of the yogurt, nice and thick!

    CHI-town readers,
I’m not sure of my flight schedule or even the whole weekend schedule, but I think both Jenna and I would like to try to get together with some readers – for drinks or a run or whatever we can! We’re staying at the Hard Rock Hotel. I’ll post a call for emails when I have more info.

    jenner ,
Thanks for the integer link – I might do that instead!

I do like Cascade Fresh, but it has a lot of sugar like the other sweetened ones.

And those Whole Foods stores have been promised for over 3 years now. I know one of the deals fell through, but I’m not getting my hopes up 🙁

    Ozlem ,
Favorite almond butter….I haven’t tried many, but for the all-natural ones I like my Harris Teether brand one. For one made with a little sugar and spice, the MaraNatha is awesome.

    Anne Leinart,
I think the event closed (I think it’s just us 15 bloggers).

    Jennifer Lingvai,
It is a killer class – but I just need a C to get it on my transcript so I’m not sweating it. Just annoyed!

    Lauren ,
    Another 10/26!!!!!! YAY!

    Amandamoo ,
I haven’t seen that brand, but I’m always on the lookout for new yogurts, so I’ll try it if I see it.

    Allison ,
Hang in there! So far I MUCH prefer Organic to General. General is just so pointless and dumb. But I do have a better professor for Organic that I’ve ever had in Gen Chem so that def. has something to do with it. Organic is harder because it is much more subjective, but it’s also more fun, if you can call it that 🙂

    mom ,
    LOL!

    Kirsten Cederberg,
Unfortunately no (I didn’t bother to ask). He probably has to work that weekend anyways.
