Breakfast Of Steel

I slept horribly last night 🙁 Despite my calming bath and reading in bed, I didn’t fall asleep until after 11. I woke up again wide awake at 2 and at that point re-set my alarm from 5:30 to 7. I think the extra hour was all I needed to make it through the day OK. Wonder what was up?

This morning’s breakfast was quick and easy – reheated steel cut-rolled oat blend. We have half and half in our fridge because the husband is cooking up something sweet for my birthday (!!!) and we decided to experiment with it in breakfast. I put about a tbsp into my oats when I reheated them and it did make it nice and creammmmy 🙂 The husband must have put a quarter cup or so into his – he had a cream soup!

DSC05017

Also involved: half a banana, a chopped date, vanilla bean paste, almonds, PB. If I remember correctly, the oat base equaled a whole serving of the two kinds of oats (compared to my 1/3 cup servings) so I didn’t add any more grains. I’ll have to see how well this keeps hunger at bay today.

DSC05018

I think I need to add the banana when I make steel cut oats because they were just not nearly as naturally sweet as my 100% rolled stove-top version. Next time!

Plus coffee, made with milk. The husband put more cream in his and I have to say it was excellent. Maybe I’ll do that tomorrow. A little does go a long way. I’m not sure I want to have to buy half and half to have in our fridge each week, but as a once-in-a-while treat, it’s really fun.

DSC05016

New placemat and Cinnamon Sugar candle from Linens N Things. Get ’em before they’re gone!

DSC05014

Headed to school today 🙁 Midterm at 2pm. Yikes!!! I might do a walk + study session between my classes. Not sure if I’ll workout this afternoon. I might just enjoy some walks instead. Depends on my mood and if I have energy to burn at 4pm.

So do you leave the PB on the spoon and eat it along with each oatmeal bite? Because if that works, I’m thinking about adding this idea to everything I eat. This would be great with Golden Grahams, tomato soup, taco meat, … I may start eating my sandwiches with a spoon!

    😉

HELP! I am going to the California Pizza Kitchen for dinner tonight. I have never been there because we don’t have them where I live. Does anyone have suggestions on what is healthy and not “too high” in calories to order? I looked over their menu but still have no idea. Thanks!

living2thetruth, Don’t FRET! I went to california pizza kitchen last week. Well, first of all, you should not be freaking out about dining out. It is a very common part of american culture, enjoying friends’ companies and trying new food that you don’t normally eat at home. hopefully thinking about it this way will ease your anxieties. When I went I ordered what my body was hungry for, and at that moment it wanted the mushroom ravioli with red sauce. I guess I just wasn’t in the mood for pizza! They have plenty of choices (Salad, pastas), but their pizza does not come by the slice, they come in “personal pizza’s” which is probably equivalent to about 3- 3 1/2 slices. If you order what ever you want, (don’t restrict) and treat yourself and stop eating when you are full (doggy-pack the rest! thats what i did and i got a cool california pizza kitchen bag) You have nothing to worry about. I dont usually go to chain restaurants like this but my friends’ sister treated us and I was having so much fun talking I did not worry about the food. unless you make eating out a habit-it’s OKAY!!!

Hope your sleeping is better tonite, I’ve been having long term problems with sleeping so I understand your frustration. Was it too warm? That could be something.. caffeine, sugar, stress, excitement? Maybe you were worried about your midterm today?

Well good luck on the test I’m sure you’ll do totally awesome!!! Can’t wait til your next post!!!

Happy Birthday, its great it falls on a weekend as well. The sleep thing is a bummer, I hate those nights that you wake up and then wake up again and again until dawn. One of my favorite bath items is Orgins float away milk bath, it tends to help me sleep better when I use it, especailly on my jet-lag specail nights 🙂 Good luck on your midterm.

Hey kath– i made wheatberries for the first time yesterday! (following your instructions, of course) and i decided to celebrate this morning by making your Sunny Side Oats for breakfast this morning! I knew i wanted to try it out but i was a little hesitant about it– I always associate oats w/sweetness and to contrast it w/the savory egg combo was different. But it was SO good!! I made the oat/milk/water mixture and i added the wheatberries and a little cottage cheese (made it so creamy!) & i topped it w/the egg & basil from my garden too. Instead of goat cheese tho, i added feta which was all i had, but i think it gave a it a good bite b/c feta is so pungunt. It was really awesome! Thanks for the idea!!

    Happy Golden Birthday!!! Woohoo!

I agree about the half and half- just a splash makes a HUGE difference in coffee. It’s so much creamier than just using skim.

Living2thetruth- Are you worried about calories at CPK? I don’t think the margherita pizza is terrible, and they offer either low fat or fat free dressing. I think you can find the nutrition info online if you google it (not through the CPK site).

Almond milk in coffee tastes just like cream, but with much fewer calories/fat! I drink coffee black a lot but now and then that creamy milky taste is so good so I always have AM on hand.

Kath, buy Fat Free Half and Half – it is so rich and creamy, you won’t be able to tell the difference.

I use it as a substitute for both heavy cream and regular half and half and no one is the wiser!

Oh, I just found this website:

www.fatsecret.com – type in California Pizza Kitchen and the first two pages are CPK calories for pizza and other entrees.

The BBQ chicken salad has 101 carbs! (no wonder my blood sugar SOARES after eating that once! – I underestimated by 50 carbs!)

    Hope that helps!

I turned 10 on the 10th too Andrea! I always sleep horribly the night before a test. I usually dream of problems like math and word problems..it is pretty horrible. I think it is from the studying at night. Your brain is active so it keeps going while you try to sleep. I hate getting a bad night sleep!

I use full-fat half-and-half in my coffee everyday and it really makes a difference! It’s so much creamier than even fat-free half-and-half and definitely than skim milk. And there’s not a huge difference nutritionally. So worth it.

I’d rather have a splash of regular half-and-half than the fat-free kind, which has corn syrup and other additives in it that aren’t found in the regular version. Usually I just use whole milk, though.

Good luck on your test Kath!

You should try the Skim-Plus milk. It seriously tastes soo creamy. The bf tasted it one day and decided to switch from his 2% because my milk tasted better and was a little better for him.

    Your combo sounds lovely!

    B_Hlthy,
    Hope your studying went well!

My red lentils have come out really mushy (I just typed mushroom!) before but I think I overcooked them. I don’t think they turned green though? Remember they need much less cooking time than brown/green.

    kate ,
Generally $75-100. We’re always trying to cut down though.

instead of trying to pick numbers out of a hat (which might take a while to write up all those #s… with over 300 comments now), you might want to check out this website: http://random.org/ and use the random integer generator that Biggie used for a giveaway on lunchinabox (where she had over 900 comments!!!!)
