Ahhhh Oattttmeal….

How I’ve missed you! It’s been two days!

dsc07485.JPG

Kath Classic this morning. And it was a WONDERFUL bowl!! Made with 2 small bananas (split between the two of us), skim milk, flax, vanilla, a smidge of brown sugar, walnuts and PB. Can’t beat it!

dsc07483.JPG

With my new favorite coffee in the whole world: Fresh Market Spring Blend.

whole82.JPG

Breakfast was 440 kcal, 9 grams fiber and 19 grams protein.

Pumpkin Dough + Spin

Had a slice of pumpkin loaf for my pre-workout breakfast. It was so delicious again! It’s not very sweet (which is how I like it) because I omited some of the maple, so if you guys decide to make it keep that in mind if you like your bread sweet. Thanks again to VeggieGirl for the recommendation!

dsc07480.JPG

Spinning was great this morning. I had lots of energy (from the pumpkin!!) and pushed myself extra hard.

I’ve got a busy day coming up. All easy tasks, but there is a LONG list of them (Thanks, Todoist.com 🙂 ) See you guys for lunch!

    THANK YOU SO MUCH EVERYONE!

I really, really appreciate some “real life” feedback. This issue has definatly been on my mind a lot! My boyfriend and I have been together for 4 years, as I mentioned, and we have a really solid relationship. We also stay over at eachother’s places the majority of the time (always haveing the inevitable debate of whose place it’s going to be). We have very open communication, and do fight, but always always take the time to resolve it immediatly. Additionally, I lived with him during 2 different summers (like a few of you bloggers) and it worked out great, I loved it. It does feel right in my heart and gut and I really appriciate the reassurance that there are people who aren’t getting divorced after living together :-p! I think it is something we will talk about more in the next little bit, but again, thank you for the confidence boost. We both know what we want and how much we are commited to eachother, so I guess numbers shouldn’t get in the way of feeling!

Off to do more thinking….you guys are the best!

    Some random things:

In regards to the living with your man thing… my guy and I have lived together for about 2 years (almost hitting our 6 year mark, we are high school lovahs).. and I’d say one of the best ways to test your relationship is to get a pet! We got a kitten last June, and another cat about 2 months ago… and raising them has been a great way to see how you would be as parents. And the added chores call for compromise as well… and having the little ones around just makes things fun!

And if any of you enjoy twice baked potatoes (who doesn’t?), I made some last night that I loaded up with broccoli and a bit of cheddar cheese – a great way to sneak veggies in there.

Also, I do the Windsor pilates and the 20 min workout is a great go-to, your abs will be sore!

Liz-I missed all the comments last night, but I wanted to add my “2 cents” in on the conversation about living with a person before marriage. I learnt in a psychology class that the reason that people living together before marriage have a higher divorce rate is because they believe they should get married, as it would be the next logical step in their relationship, versus really being ready for that next big commitment. The way to alleviate this situation is to make sure you’re getting married for the right reasons-you love one another, you are commited to each other, it is truly what you want- and not the wrong reasons- it seems like you’re of the right age, you’ve been together for a long time, etc.
    Hope that helps 🙂

Both you mentioned that you eat mid morning and afternoon snacks. Would you all mind giving your favorite examples. Sometimes a small snack of crackers and cheese actually makes me more hungry, because it is small. Do you ever find that? Thanks girls!

p.s. Nadia you said you eat pb everyday- I don’t always eat it for lunch but I seriously can’t go a day without it at some point during the day! Any bread recommendations for pb sandwiches?

I have a question for Kath or anyone else who can help me. Can you gain 3 pounds in one week? I weighed myself last week and since then my weight is 3 pounds higher, I’ve been working out every day (I want to maintain, not lose or gain) and averaging a net of 1350, sometimes closer to 1450 on some days over the last week, I’m 5’9 and typically 125, was this 3 pounds most likely water weight? How often do you girls weigh yourselves for maintenance?

i admit– i weigh myself everyday for maintenance. this can make you kind of crazy because yes its totally possibly to gain 3 lbs because of water weight (i doubt you gained 3 lbs of real weight in one week with your exercising and eating!).

however, i like to weight myself everyday because it helps keep me on track. and it makes me happy when my weight is what it should be 🙂

interesting discussion on living together before marriage. it seems like the wedding is just an event nowadays. if your faith doesn’t play a role in your decision making process, then the wedding itself is just an american tradition.

im not sure why the divorce rates are higher for couples who live together first. it would be interesting to look at all of the confounding variables in those statistics. my husband and i didnt live together before marriage for a number of reasons. i dont know that the argument that its best to live together before marriage so you really know eachothers quirks before you take the leap is valid–you either are committed to someone or you aren’t. whether or not they snore or leave their dirty clothes on the floor shouldn’t make or break the relationship if you love them.

ashley- my weight fluctuates about 3 lbs (i weight myself the same time everday, before working out or eating and after doing my “business” ahemmm). if i get over a certain weight, i know it isnt water weight and work out harder or eat smarter for a few days. i’ve heard its common to have your weight range up to 5 lbs, but mine doesnt change more than 3 on most days.

    Michelle,
My snacks usually depend on what I ate for breakfast or lunch. Usually my mid-morning snack will more so be a continuation of my breakfast-so I’ll have a small bowl of cereal with fruit at my house, and then around 10 have 1/2 a bagel with jam, or an English muffin with a tbsp cream cheese. If I have a bigger breakfast at home, then I’ll typically just have a piece of fruit around 10:30 or 11.
My afternoon snack is sort of throughout the afternoon. I like to continuously eat, so I’ll have part of my lunch during lunchtime (usually a sandwich and a small yogurt container), then have some cut up vegetables around 2 or 3. I’ll usually eat again at around 4 or 4:30, nearing the end of my day but before I go to the gym (I’m not a morning person AT ALL so I go to the gym after work) and I’ll typically have a granola bar, handful of nuts, crackers & cheese, yogurt with cheerios, and occasionally I’ll have something sweet like homemade brownies or cookies.
I find what helps to not be more hungry is during the morning I have my snack with tea, and in the afternoon, once I finish my snack I’ll have a piece of gum. I usually do find I’m more hungry immediately after I eat my snack, but if I pay attention to my body about 20 minutes later I feel full (well maybe not full, but no longer hungry)
Hopefuly that helps, and sorry that it got so long!

    Hi Kath,

I am looking into getting a Sigg bottle for water because I just realized my current bottle is made using Bisphenol A (Type 7 and everything…Bummer!) I was wondering how you felt about the Sigg now that you’ve had it for awhile…could you tell me what size and type of bottle you got and if you would reccommend it? Their website has tons of options and I am having trouble deciding what to get. Thanks! 🙂

    Bev ,
Take a wild guess on the placemats…..Crate and Barrel 🙂

    Chels,
It’s SO exciting. My b-day is October 26th – maybe you’ll be overdue and we’ll have the same birthday! October is a wonderful birthday month. Can’t wait to see you again!

    Kelly T,
I’m never far from the Internet (sadly) so I do “carry” ToDoist with me 🙂 My gym is about 2.5 miles away.

    Kristine ,
I think it’s approprite to say “It’s a great day to be a Wildcat.” (And while it would be amazing for them to win…I’m not getting my hopes up..)

    Veg,
I have NOT tried maple butter (and I’ve only had pumpkin and apple butter once or twice in restaurants). What kind do you buy!?

    Angelcubbie ,
You can gain 3 pounds of “weight” in a week, but not 3 pounds of fat …or muscle. You’d have to eat 3,500 x 3 calories ON TOP OF maintenance calories to gain that much. Unless you’re eating at buffets all week, I seriously doubt you could do it.

    Kiala ,
Get out your sled and hit the hills!

    Susan ,
    We shall see tonight!

    Lacey ,
Haha, I think after I’ve made the exact same combo so many times, I probably can get away with attaching my name to it.

    Elizabeth and Yaz,
I LOVE the Sigg. I hate Nalgene bottles because they smell and my Sigg doesn’t smell at all. I have a .6 liter one because i’d rather fill it up more than have to carry around more weight. Definitely worth the money! Yaz, I use a plastic squirt bottle at the gym so I don’t have to unscrew a cap. I would get the sport top if you plan to use it for workouts because the traditional top is kind of labor intensive to unscrew.

    Rachel,
Yesterday’s lunch kept hunger at bay until around 4:30 – 5 when I had the early dinner. The burrito was pretty filling. I do love yogurt with lunch though!

    Christianne ,
That sandwich sounds great!! I think I remember reading that one..

LisaR-I totally feel your pain! One night I got to bed a little bit early so I decided that the next day I was going to do it-I would get up early and go for a run….but then the entire night I dreamt that I got up and ran-so when my alarm went off at 5:00 I was like, “WHAT?! I haven’t ran yet?”…and then proceeded to reset my alarm for 6:30 (which is when I usually get up) and just went after work.
I guess everybody just has different internal clocks (probably doesn’t help that my boyfried works evenings so during the weekend we stay up very late together & sleep in very late-hard to keep your body in a routine).
This is a question for everybody- how bad is it (or is it bad) to eat really healthy during the week and “store up” extra calories so you can splurge during the weekend? My boyfriend and I usually drink and eat quite a bit during the weekends (around 2500-3000 calories a day) but during the week eat around 1600-1800 (for my body I’m suppose to be eating between 2200-2400). Is this terrible for me?

I’m not Kath, but I love my Sigg. I have a .6L with the sweet global time zones pattern, but I would definitely recommend getting the 1L if you drink a good amount of water. I wish I had the larger, but got mine as a gift so I can’t complain!

I’m contemplating getting the hot/cold bottle, as I’ve heard they’re great, too. I really like my sturdy screw top and that it’s pretty lightweight, despite being metal. I have the special cleaning tabs, but haven’t really used them and haven’t had a problem with the bottle getting gross or the water tasting foul like I did with my Nalgenes.

Love all the feedback from you gals (guys?) about living together! As for us, I think we have been together long enough to know each others quirks…a little too comfortable at times haha! He is defiantly past the “fart phase”. I think that should be an official a bench marker in relationships :-p. I have always thought and said that I would never marry someone unless we lived together first. It makes the most sense to me; why not get everything out in the open before marriage? Plus, I don’t see why a title like marriage should change a relationship. If you love each other, know each other, and are committed, I am not sure how things could change so dramatically just by walking down some isle. What you get is what you get right?

I just tried a recipe for a grilled cheese sandwich from Self magazine and it was really good so I thought I’d share. You puree a can of white beans in a food processor with 2 tablespoons of water and 2 teaspoons of dijon mustard. Then spread that mixture on each slice of bread with one slice of cheese and then grill in skillet with cooking spray. It was really creamy and obviously upped the fiber and protein b/c of the beans. The mixture makes a lot so you can store it and make more sandwiches later in the week. Just thought I’d share that if anyone else loves a grilled cheese like I do!

    Michelle,

I always eat the pb and j on rye bread – the ‘beefsteak’ variety that’s sold pretty much everywhere. I used to eat it on pepperidge farm wheat bread but my ex-roomie introduced me to rye and i never went back 😛

As for the snacks…I LOVE fruits so I always have a piece of fruit for a snack mid-morning. Today I had a Fugi apple mid-morning which was enough because I eat my breakfast at 9ish when I come into work (that’s when I get hungry) and it always holds me over well so a piece of fruit is enough. Mid-afternoon though I usually get pretty hungry… Typically I eat the following:

-dried apricots, almonds and a pear

-honey graham cracker sticks with pb (yes, i’m obsessed with pb) and a banana

-a couple slices of veggie cheddar cheese on an english muffin

-homemade hummus and slice of veggie cheddar cheese on an english muffin

the above is when I’ve actually planned ahead but if not then I have a luna bar – which keeps me full longer than any other bar (and i’ve tried my fair share of energy bars). I eat dinner sort of early though…like around 6 but if I’m eating a late dinner than I just have a bigger mid-afternoon snack like

whole wheat waffles with smart balance and jam

oatmeal (unfortunately the instant kind) made with almond milk,

bowl of heart to heart with milk

Zbar with a cup or so of almond milk

    Hope that helps!

Thanks Allie your comment is very helpful. I am definetly, considering the 1L bottle. I was also wondering about the designs/patters. Are they painted on the bottle? I’d hate to buy a bottle with designs and then end up with a scratched bottle surface or even worst the design coming of the bottle and onto my hands. I have also seen the hot and cold bottle and have considered it as well.

Speaking of water, I have heard that it is better to drink room temp water instead of cold water because it shocks your system. Does anyone know if this is true?

I’ve got a SIGG too, and haven’t had any problems with the designs scratching off or any denting, and I’ve dropped mine a much of times. I love mine, but I will warn you that if you want to add ice, the cubes have to be small, as the mouth of the bottle is pretty tight. And Kath is right about the screwtop, it’s a bit difficult to take off and on at the gym. I got the sport top, and it was definitely worth it.
