Adrenaline + Oats Don’t Mix

*Shudders*

Got up and packed for Cali this AM. Always do the most important things of the day first! I am bringing a teeny little suitcase for my 48 hours there and needed to pack each article of clothing and each accessory to minimize the items. Can I just say that my shoes are taking up more space in my suitcase than my clothes!?

Came down and knew it was a big day. A jar was ready!!!

IMG_3279 (640x427)

IMG_3273 (640x427)

  • 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup soy milk, 1/2 cup water [Used 1/2 a cup today because knew toppings would be minimal!]
  • 1 med extra ripe banana
  • 1 spoonful chia seeds
  • Pinch salt, splash vanilla
  • ~1 tbsp remaining TJ’s PB on the bottom
  • Salty peanuts to complete the flavor circle

IMG_3276 (640x427)

Half decaf Spring Blend, Half Mara‘s Peruvian Blend

IMG_3268 (640x427)

I was excited to dig in…

IMG_3280 (640x427)

BUTTTTTTT……………………..

A ROACH DECIDED TO JOIN ME FOR BREAKFAST!! What’s odd is that it’s not spider season here in NC and I’ve been coming down in the mornings to find dead + alive medium-sized spiders in the house. I don’t like spiders, but they are not as bad as roaches because they are slow moving.

However, this morning, I did NOT see a spider for the first time in a few days. Weird.

I also noticed that one of the living room chairs had been moved. Weird.

I proceeded to make breakfast and before I’d had a chance to take even one bite, I noticed a huge roach – in the daylight (they seem to be mostly nocturnal) – coming across the dining room floor.

AHHHHHH

I didn’t want to lose sight of him, but I raced to the garage shelf and got the spray (my only defense – not going to get close enough to stomp on him with flip flops on).

I arrived just in time to see him go under this baseboard and sprayed away.

IMG_3281 (640x427)

I didn’t know what to do next. I didn’t want to leave the room in case he came back out, but I didn’t want to eat breakfast in there either. My appetite was gone!

A few minutes of just standing there shaking, I started to hear some noises in the wall. Fluttering noises that suggested maybe the spray had gotten to him.

You can imagine my surprise when all of a sudden he just came running out of the crack – I was too close for comfort!!!!

Then he ran – obviously affected by the spray – all around the dining room and even GOT ON MY TABLE! The nerve of that dumb roach!!

IMG_3287 (640x427)

[Of course I was photographing the whole thing 😉 ]

IMG_3286 (640x427)

IMG_3288 (640x427)

IMG_3285 (640x427)

Finally he got in a space where I could spray him again. (Was not going to spray my table!)

Got him good.

And then put a bowl on him, just for extra protection.

IMG_3292 (640x427)

Thank you Ortho Max.

IMG_3289 (640x427)

NOTE: I do not like killing ANY animals nor watching them suffer. It does upset me – even for a roach. I do not kill creatures in the wild (except for when semi-poisonous snakes too close to the garage for comfort). But when a creature comes into my house, they have crossed the line. I have no mercy.

My oats didn’t taste very good 🙁 My stomach is kind of turned.

OH – and remember the chair that was moved? I bet Matt saw this roach last night and tried to get him and was not quick enough!! Left him for me to have to deal with 👿

ahahaha I can totally relate! A little bit ago I had turned my back in the kitchen and turned back around to see a roach crawling around the bottom of my mug that I had some cereal in. Freaked. the Heck. Out. Then the stupid roach crawled into my just-cleaned dishwasher. I got more dishwasher soap, threw it in there and quickly turned the dishwasher on. Death by steaming/ over heating/ drowning? Never saw him again…

I also had another time where when I got into my husband’s truck a spider crawled onto my skirt. I screamed like a baby. Hubby to the rescue! lol

It freaked me out bc I always assume roaches are reserved for “dirty” places and our house could not be ANY cleaner. Oh well.. its that time of year I suppose! ENjoy cali. JEALOUS.

Have you tried Boric Acid? My roommate and I had problems w/roaches in the condo we lived in in college. No matter how clean we were, just the fact that the unit was 20+ years old meant they were in the walls. We lined the baseboards with boric acid and that seemed to help. We bought it at Lowe’s.

PS–I freak when I see Roaches too!! I can kill them, but I won’t pick them up & flush them. I make the BF do that. In college, said roommate and I tag-teamed the roaches. One would grab the Raid, the other a heavy LSAT study guide. We’d stand on a chair or something(we refused to get close to it), one would spray it and the other would slam the book on it. Then one of us would stomp on the book for good measure, while the other went and got the neighbor to flush it 🙂

    Hiya Kath!

After a summer full of three different kind of ants in my home and spiders invading my mother’s home, i just thought I’d tell you a couple things that worked for us.

There is spray you can buy that you can spray inside and outside of your house: along the door frames, windows, door cracks, anywhere bugs would want to go. They cross this path, become sick and eventually pass on to buggy heaven. It keeps some out all together.

And like some mentioned… the only spiders/other big bugs i ever find (we don’t have roaches here) are already dead because of my cat! i know finding any bug is gross and scary, but better finding one already gone than having to kill it and then toss it! cats are great bug hunters 😀

    and congrats!
    and good luck 🙂

OMG, you are so brave. I would’ve collapsed if I saw that roach. I’m so confused…. did he think flying on the table was going to make you happy? No sir!
Too bad you had to use such a nice bowl to trap him. Now you’ll be thinking about that when you use the bowl next time. Stay strong in the fight against critters!

OMGosh! When I was in high school/lived at home, if I saw a spider/bug on the ground I could not come close enough to kill it so I would grab a cup/bowl and put it over the bug. Then after school when my mom or brother came home I would make them kill it. It would crack them up to come home to see a cup in the middle of the room on the floor. LOL!

If you’re seiing roaches in the daytime, you have major infestation. Only the weakest come out in daylight for food. Get some cobat discs or call someone to spray. xo

Hi Kath! I love your blog and read it at least once a day! I don’t want this to come out the wrong way, but you said that you hate killing things, yet you eat meat?? Isn’t this a little hypocritical? I seriously am not trying to be one of those mean commenters, because I LOVE you and your blog, but I was just wondering how you justify this?

    Thanks!

    Have a great day! 🙂

Too funny about the roach! I thought I was the only one that sprayed them to death with anything from bug spray to hair spray and then trap them for good measure. Hilarious!

I’m so sad that the roach ruined your oats in a jar. 🙁

    Lauren,
Yes, I suppose it is a bit hypocritical. But I do feel like we are killing animals to nourish and fuel our bodies, whereas killing bugs is more of a phobia (that I can’t get over!) without furthering the species. Yes, we can survive without meat, but it is very nutritious. What I cringe about most about the whole roach/snake ordeal is the suffering. I am trying harder and harder to spend my dollars at the market on meal from farms in my area that treat animals humanely.

    Lynn,
I don’t think the oats are quite hot enough to harm the plastic.

Since you don’t like killing the animals, did you get a chance to check out that coffee grounds article I posted in a comment a while back? It is a way to get them out of the house without killing them, and is easy, “green”, and inexpensive. If you want, I can look it up again and re-post, just let me know.

I love this story. I live in NY where roaches are like birds, they are everywhere. I am lucky to live in a apt on the 6th floor, where we have an amazing exterminator. Also my cat is hunts anything down that moves.
