Finally starting to feel the effects of working full time – in a GOOD way: free weekends!!!! This might be the first time in AGES that I haven’t had work to do on the weekends. I’m caught up on my freelance work, the blog is being written as I type (hee hee) and our house is super clean and organized and ready for sale!
It was nice to watch two episodes of House Hunters and have the only tasks on my agenda include a run, a grocery store trip, a bit of food preparation and a party!
I set my alarm for 6:26 this morning so I’d have plenty of time to digest breakfast before my 11AM run with Emily. Often I sleep late, eat late and then am too sloshy to run before lunch!
Plus 6:26
is a fun time to wake
I opened a new product to review this morning: Bob’s Red Mill’s Apple + Cinnamon + Grains Hot Cereal! This guy came in the massive breakfast package of samples they sent me a while back
Bob!
Ingredients include a variety of grains plus dried apples, flax and cinnamon
NUTR stats
How bout dem apples!?
For TWO SERVINGS I cooked:
- 1/2 a cup hot cereal
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 banana
- 1 tbsp chia
- Pinch salt
- Splash vanilla
Toppings:
- TJ’s PB
- Coconut butter melted icing
- Mix My Granola Banana Chip + Chia seed granoler
I did like the subtle apple cinnamony flavor a lot
This would be even better with big chunks of apples mixed in.
Honestly it wasn’t all that filling because the volume was less than soupy oats. Hoping it’s one of those quality over quantity things and I still have enough energy and satiety… Next time I might cook oats and mix in 1-2 tbsp of the apple cinnamon hot cereal to fill in the oat gaps.
I think this is a Monster Mash Monster!
Remember that awesome game!?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my college roomie Meredith!!
Here she is at her birthday in 2005, our senior year
And here are some more fun times from college!! [Click to enlarge]

Speaking of the olden days, I am currently Groovesharkin’ to Enigma’s "Return To Innocence." What a fab song.
Off to run NINE miles. AHHH! Hope my foot holds up!

love the flashback pictures! and monster mash.
Haha loving those pictures, too cute! Good luck on your run girl!
Oh man, I LOVE the retainer picture. So awesome!
Good luck on your run!
Adding apples to that mix sounds delicious – I always find dry apples are no substitue for the real ones.
Enjoy your day – sounds like you’ve got some time for relaxation!
Kath,
I got a juicer for Christmas. I’ve been enjoying making fruit juices but I am a little afraid of trying veggie juices. Do you or anyone else have any suggestions for some less flavorful veggies that I can add with the fruit to kind of “ease me in” to making veggie juice? Thanks!!
I think romaine and cucumbers are a good place to start. This morning, my mix was romaine, carrots, beets, lemon and english cucumber. I also really enjoy things like parsley and basil added into the mix.
Gena did this great post on juices and you might like some of these:

I always add an egg white to non-pumpkin oats–the extra bit of volume is super filling.
Have a great run!
I can never decide which sched I like better….working all week and getting the weekends off OR working alllll the time but having 1-2 hours of class everyday.
Happy Birthday ROOMIE!
Good luck on the run!!!! Sounds like you have a fun day planned! And I LOVE Bob’s Red Mill’s hot cereals
Happy Birthday to your roomie!! Enjoy your Sunday of freedom – I can’t wait for that day to come when I’m in the same boat
Enigma! I love ‘Return to Innocence,’ what a great song.
Have a good run!
The Bob’s mix reminds me of the Apple Cinnamon Instant Quaker packs I used to inhale by the twosome when I was little. These nutritionals look much nicer.
Have a nice run!
There are definitely pros and cons to both sides regarding work/school. My philosophy is to enjoy whichever one you’re in, which I am doing despite the fact that I’m facing a Sunday full of schoolwork.
Yaayy good luck with the nine, you’ll be great!! I just completed my first half marathon this morning
(sorry, I just had to tell someone!!!!) Don’t you love the glowy, basking-in-my-own-glory feeling after a long run!?
I’ve got some oats that have loads of other stuff mixed in, and I actually found them more filling than regular ones – mine had pumpkin and poppy seeds, so I can imagine the extra fats helped. Either way, I hope yours hold you over OK
Congrats!!
NINE miles- awesome, Kath!!! Loving your wake up time and the pix of you all are hilarious!!!
I love that Bobs Red Mill cereal – I eat it with some additional apples and really enjoy it.
Weekends are definitely a great perk of working!!
Weekends are the best… even though mine starts on friday since class is from mon-thurs
that breakfast mix actually sounds like a quick alternative for a tasty warm breakfast. I might look around for something like that because I used to love Quaker oats Cinnamon Apple packets
wow, sleeping late and eating late… that’s a normal w/e for the average person Kath, FYI
I must not be normal then because i rarely do that on my weekends. In my opinion, there is no normal, or average for that matter. Everyone is different
Well I’m sorry I’m not as “normal” as you are!
I’ve seen those Bob’s Red Mill mixes in stores and always wanted to try them but was worried they wouldn’t be as filling. Thanks for answering that question
Good luck on the 9-miler!
and what’s the point of a weekend if you set an alarm??? seriously?! it’s like getting up to work all over again
The point of a weekend is to have fun. I had LOTS of fun eating oatmeal and playing with matt no matter what time of day.
OMG, I loved Return to Innocence. I totally forgot about that song. It was on all my mix tapes from college. Remember mix tapes?
I’m sure you’ve said it, but what half marathon are you running?
Racefest in Charlotte. I haven’t registered yet though!
Good luck on the 9 miles!! Just think of it as 3 5K’s…
I love a early start to my weekend.. even though most people think you should sleep in… I have already baked 6 dozen cookies for my bake sale.
Good luck on the run!!
Good luck with your run! Yesterday was FUN, sad that you are moving
Oh and college days are THE BEST…yay for free weekends!
That looks and sounds great — love Bob’s products! A big bowl of oats was the perfect way to fuel before facing 26 inches of snow this morning.
I set my alarm some days off too! Morning is my facorite time of day and i don’t want to miss it!
The weekends are so much better when you have a hectic week! Enjoy the short to-do list and your run!
“Ahughuhguh guahuhughguhgugh hgughguhahuh” (sexy monotone whisper) “It’s a Return to Innocence”
Is that the song you are talking about?
Hahahha. When I saw those words and then the word “sex” coming up I didn’t know WHAT you were going to say!
Sure was fun playing Monster Mash in the olden days. It’s a great game!
Definitely want to try that cereal- apple cinnamon anything gets an A in my book…oh and I also have a tendency to set my alarm at random numbers- on weekdays I always get up at 6:47. It’s to the point that I actually open my eyes at 6:46…crazy what routine does.
sorry the oats weren’t that filling. have a great run and happy bday to your friend!
i just bought some bob’s mix too – serving size is so small! i wonder if increasing it will keep more satiated.
I just bought some of Bob Red Mill’s Muesli and can’t wait to try it for breakfast tomorrow!!
Enjoy your fun weekend! Looking forward to hearing about the party
I wish I had someone to run 9 miles with. Enjoy your low-key day =)
You have the most photogenic coffee eva! I need coffee….!! x 10
Reading your blog has given me a brilliant idea..to open an oatmeal bar… you go there and there would be several types of oatmeal. and an array of toppings: fruits, nuts, yogurt, nut butters, granola
and there would be specials of the day. brilliant plan and incredibly healthy. it would be so cute.
hope your 9 miles went well!
If you open it, I will fly to you to attend the opening
GL on the 9 miles! I did 8, are you trying to one up me? lol!
You know it!
College Kath pictures makes my Sunday!
Good luck on the nine miles!! Woo hoo!
Hope the 9 goes well!
I’ve been using the Bob’s 10 Grain High Fiber Cereal for making bread. There’s 30 grams of fiber in a cup! Amazing.
i also have several Bob’s products to dig into and try hiding in my pantry – their nutrition facts are always so appealing!
and i TOTALLY agree that weekends with v. little to do and lots of time to enjoy what DOES need to be done is such a perk of full time work. I like to take my time fully appreciating the activities I am doing during the weekend and its so much more difficult to do when I have work to complete!
I love Bob’s Red Mill products! I’d love to try more! I’m only tried the 7 grain hot cereal which was delicious and really satisfying!
Oh, yummy looking breakfast! I need to try that out. That song is an all time favorite of mine…reminds me of college and when I met my husband! Definitely good times!
Yum! I love anything by Bob’s Red Mill – they definitely make the best products! The oats look delicious.
