August 23, 2011

Good morning from the first day of fall!! It’s 55* outside, crisp and shadowy. Absolutely love it! And I love that Virginia has the longest fall ever.

Although my alarm went off at 6:26 this morning, I pittered around for an HOUR before I left on my run. Reading emails, blogs, walking laps around my living room…

Finally, I went. I took a new route, which was fun, but felt twice as long as my usual route even though it wasn’t!

It’s been a looong time since I had a Dough Boy Smoothie!!! Delicious texture through and through.

This hot new Salsabol is coming to OpenSky in 3 colors. Love the lime green – it matches my french press!!  And the curve – so sexy.

It reminds me of those teacup rides at the State Fair with the high backs. Tilt-a-whirl! Makes the smoothie all the more cozy : )

Blueberry Dough Boy

  • 1 big banana
  • 1 small handful blueberries
  • 1/3 cup raw rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup yogurt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • Pinch salt
  • Sprinkle cinnamon

–> Into the fridge overnight in your blender. Do not blend yet.

–> Overnight

–> In the morning, add a splash more milk and blend away!

–> Top with crunchy granola and BARNEY BUTTER!!

Barney Butter – coming soon to OpenSky as well! Oh how I have missed it!

Adagio birthday cake tea to sip

Plans for the day: write news post (maybe!), help Matt at biz, book club!

Fall? Nooooo! Good thing it’s still summer where I live. I will take sunny and low 80s any day. :)

2 sara @ real fun food August 23, 2011 at 8:47 am

How is it fall already?? I actually had to think about the date when you said that, and then realized yes, it is the end of August. I also saw that Starbucks is having a vote and one city will get pumpkin spice lattes a week early. One of my fall favorites!!

3 Cait @ Beyond Bananas August 23, 2011 at 8:47 am

I am loving the cooler weather right now – because I can do some things in the morning.. and THEN RUN. I don’t feel like I have to be out the door at 6am to beat the heat!

4 Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat August 23, 2011 at 8:48 am

I’m so not ready for fall! It’s starting to feel pretty crisp here and I’m hoping that my days of wearing shorts aren’t over quite yet. That bowl is so cool!

5 Katherina @ Zephyr Runs August 23, 2011 at 8:48 am

Sweet bowl! And our high is 91* today so Fall is definitely not upon Orlando just yet..

6 Khushboo August 23, 2011 at 8:48 am

Wow kudos for still going for your run! One hour of pottering would have killed my motivation!

7 Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio August 23, 2011 at 8:49 am

yummy yummy!! I can’t wait to try my barney butter from the HLS grab bag!

Enjoy your day!

8 Gina @ running to the kitchen August 23, 2011 at 8:50 am

I love fall but in NY it turns to winter way too quickly :(
That bowl does look just like that ride!

9 kaila@ healthy helper blog! August 23, 2011 at 8:51 am

Mmm yummy smoothie! Love that bowl too! The green is so puuurty!

10 Hannah August 23, 2011 at 8:52 am

Perfect sunflower blob 😛

11 Samantha @ Bikini Birthday August 23, 2011 at 8:53 am

I’m loving that the weather is starting to cool down a bit… that means less humidity in these parts. One more month until the equinox.

I actually love fall though. I think October has the best weather.

12 Baking N Books August 23, 2011 at 11:42 am

I agree – the humidity this summer was killer…but now I find 23 C too cool after getting used to the heat!

How much does Barney Butter cost ??- for instance, do you actually save much from ordering it online? (not that I can buy it in person here in my part of Canada…or if they even sell to Canada I don’t know)

13 [email protected] August 23, 2011 at 8:54 am

I love that bowl!

14 Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me August 23, 2011 at 8:54 am

I love Fall! So excited for this crisp awesome weather!

15 Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey August 23, 2011 at 8:55 am

I am ready, ready for autumn! It feels pretty good here in Charlotte today, as well. Surprisingly low humidity! I’m off to take the kiddos to the park to enjoy. Bring on September!

16 katie @KatieDid August 23, 2011 at 8:56 am

chilli, cornbread, crisp apples. SO excited!!! September is my favorite month for these reasons :)

17 Claire @ Live and Love to Eat August 23, 2011 at 8:59 am

Had oats in my drinkable smoothie this morning – so good!

18 Sara August 23, 2011 at 9:00 am

Did you finish your book club book yet? So excited for fall.

19 KathEats August 23, 2011 at 9:05 am

Not yet!

20 Cait's Plate August 23, 2011 at 9:05 am

Oh man, it’s been so long since I’ve had barney butter! I discovered sunflower butter and the rest was just history. I haven’t even really eaten peanut butter in such a long time!

My OpenSky Warrior Crunch granola came today! It tastes like Fall! I’m loving it!

21 Meredith August 23, 2011 at 9:05 am

Mmmm that breakfast looks sooo good!

Very anxious to hear your news! :)

22 Ashley @ Granola Grrl August 23, 2011 at 9:06 am

It’s starting to get chillier here as well. I’m bitter about it, though – I love the summer, and when it starts to get colder it means that I need to brace myself for six brutal months of Michigan winter. :(

Oh, also – what type of yogurt did you use for the smoothie? Plain or flavored, Greek or not? Thanks 😀

23 KathEats August 23, 2011 at 9:09 am

Plain low-fat organic

24 Jazz August 23, 2011 at 9:59 am

Don’t worry, I live in Saskatchewan where it gets to -40 F for weeks on end… The thought of fall makes me shudder!

25 Mel August 23, 2011 at 9:07 am

It’s funny you mention fall, it’s finally starting to feel like summer here in the Pac NW! AKA, our days are typically in the mid 70s and sunny! August is definitely the best month for us. I love it!

26 Foodie (Fab and Delicious Food) August 23, 2011 at 9:08 am

Cool bowl! Love Fall! Such a great season! Always look forward to it! Have a great day!

27 Kerry August 23, 2011 at 9:09 am

Yay autumn! Can’t wait

28 Tracey August 23, 2011 at 9:12 am

It has been so long since I’ve had Barney Butter. I’m going to be on the look out for that sale.

Fall is my favorite season. I wish it would last longer. The season is just so short in Chicago!

29 Mai August 23, 2011 at 9:14 am

Aah, yay for fall weather. It’s still hitting the 100s here in Texas!

30 Ashley August 23, 2011 at 9:21 am

I. Love. Fall! I’m wearing new skinny jeans today in honor of the shift in weather.

And I really dig that bowl!I will definitely be getting one when it appears on opensky.

31 Rose August 23, 2011 at 9:22 am

I need To try a dough boy smoothie! Yours looks great- and I love That bowl!:)

34 Angel7 August 23, 2011 at 9:29 am

There is variety of almond butters out there. What almond butter brand is the best you ever had?

35 KathEats August 23, 2011 at 10:00 am

I really like Barney Butter + Maranatha because they are not too dry – they are smooth and sticky like peanut butter. And my homemade pumpkin spice is incredible!!

36 Meaghan O'Connor (My Spoonful of Inspiration) August 23, 2011 at 9:30 am

I absolutely LOVE fall. Sweatshirt weather is the best. Congrats on the run- I took one as well! :)

37 Katelyn@ Foodie Goes to School August 23, 2011 at 9:32 am

38 KathEats August 23, 2011 at 10:00 am

In a few weeks!

You’re so funny- a sexy oatmeal bowl? haha :-)

44 Kate (What Kate is Cooking) August 23, 2011 at 9:43 am

I can wait for fall! Even though California doesn’t have seasons, it’s the season to eat pumpkin and candy corn :)

45 Kristin @ STUFT Mama August 23, 2011 at 9:43 am

I’m jealous of your cool weather. I’m patiently awaiting a crisp fall morning. LOVE the bowl (and the post title). :) Thanks for bringing the dough boy back to play. I just got a Vitamix and one of these smoothies just might have to be the first thig I make in it. :)

46 Estela @ Weekly Bite August 23, 2011 at 9:44 am

Love that bowl!!

47 Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance August 23, 2011 at 9:49 am

That bowl does look like a tilt a whirl! Or maybe a giant oval egg half?

Okay okay, tilt a whirl it is…

48 Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife August 23, 2011 at 9:51 am

Fall weather is pretty awesome, but I realllllyyyy love Summer :)

Mornings feel like fall!
I love the cooler temps for running.

51 Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table August 23, 2011 at 10:07 am

I’m envious of your cool mornings! I was just commenting to a friend yesterday that I’m ready for winter – pasta dinners and curling up under blankets.

52 [email protected] August 23, 2011 at 10:16 am

ahhhhh that is so awesome!!! I loove love fall, but here in CA it takes forever to BE fall, and goes in and out whenever it pleases haha! But I’m very excited for it 😀

53 [email protected] August 23, 2011 at 10:18 am

I am loving the morning temps being so much cooler! It’s so nice to walk outside and not feel as if you’re going to melt at 6am. Yesterday our A/C never kicked on at all, it was bliss!! Fall is coming and I couldn’t be more excited :)

54 Hillary August 23, 2011 at 10:22 am

Maryland felt like fall this morning, too—60 degrees and breezy. It was delightful!

That bowl is adorable. I think I need one ; )

55 Jennifer August 23, 2011 at 10:24 am

I love these cooler mornings and nights. :)

Yes, include your “news” post in your list of to-do’s today. :)

Enjoy your day!!

56 [email protected] August 23, 2011 at 10:25 am

LOVE that bowl! That color is one of my favorites too. I definitely need to get me one of those!

57 Amber August 23, 2011 at 10:26 am

I can’t wait for it to start feeling like fall here in Carolina Beach! I love warm weather but I am really looking forward to “fall foods”. I love Barney Butter! It is always delicious atop a nice bowl of oatmeal. My boyfriend is always commenting on how many different “peanut butters” I have in the pantry. I am always quick to point out that some of them aren’t even peanut butter! Some days I feel like Justin’s…or Barney’s…or Maranatha. But never ever do I feel like Peter Pan’s Honey Roasted which is his favorite and he has two jars. This post has also sparked my interest in trying a Dough Boy smoothie tomorrow. I never even thought that I liked oatmeal until pointed me in the direction of your blog and I broke down and tried your whipped banana oats and I am in love! Thank you for introducing me to my new favorite breakfast. And now I will end the longest comment ever.

58 Lauren @ What Lauren Likes August 23, 2011 at 10:26 am

Yeah for fall! I love that green bowl too :)

59 lynn @ the actor's diet August 23, 2011 at 10:41 am

wow fall already? we’re just getting into the hot months in LA…

60 Rosa - Fitness, Food, Fulfilled August 23, 2011 at 10:45 am

I’m in love with that bowl! The color is beautiful and the shape is so funky. I’m a huge Fiesta fan, and this is very much in line with their colors and would go great with the stuff I already have. Cute!

61 Jackie August 23, 2011 at 10:54 am

I’m totally crushing on that bowl!

62 emily August 23, 2011 at 11:01 am

I definitely read “book club” as verb noun; as in I need to book, as in rent, a club to use for a party. I’m a total dork, and a librarian’s daughter to boot, so I’m not sure why that was my first impression but it made me giggle!

63 Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn August 23, 2011 at 11:04 am

Ahahahah “dough boy”. Love you. Slash I had no idea it was ACTUALLY the first day of fall — I thought it was just cool all of a sudden! I’m diggin the weather! Have a glorious day g-franddd!

64 KathEats August 23, 2011 at 11:12 am

It’s not actually the first day – I think that’s Sept. 20th?! It just REALLY feels like fall here!

65 Aine @ Something to Chew Over August 23, 2011 at 11:18 am

I love autumn so much, it’s my favourite time of the year!

Please don’t keep us in suspense much longer :)

66 Sarah @ Sarah's Modern Bites August 23, 2011 at 11:23 am

LOVE that bowl! Something about eating out of beautiful bowls or off beautiful plates takes the whole experience to a higher level haha

Do you have any bamboo bowls? I love those!

67 Kristen Waby August 23, 2011 at 11:24 am

That bowl rocks! I was thinking of trying out your infamous smoothie tomorrow! P.S. I tried out that coconut black bean dip and LOVED it! Thanks for the inspiration

68 Shaya August 23, 2011 at 11:28 am

Mmmm birthday cake teaaaaa. Now I just want a slice of birthday cake and a mug of tea…

Fall is in the air here as well and I am loving it. chx tortilla soup in crockpot…windows open

70 Lynda @ Healthy Hoboken Girl August 23, 2011 at 11:37 am

Enjoy the fresh fall weather!! Happy book club night!

71 Johanna B August 23, 2011 at 11:44 am

It’s not fall here yet but it’s coming – I can almost smell it. Can hardly wait. Fall is my favorite time of the year. All those leaves turning and crunching underfoot, the chill in the air and the first smell of fireplaces wafting through the air. Mmmmm.

72 Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin August 23, 2011 at 11:50 am

I used to be obsessed with the tilt-a-whirl when I was a kid! My cousin and I would go on the one at the Thanksgiving fair so many times in a row until we felt sick! 😛

I’m so excited for fall! I’m ready for some cooler weather after this brutal summer we’ve had here.

73 Katie @ Peace Love and Oats August 23, 2011 at 12:00 pm

I’ll have to try the dough boy smoothie again, I tried it once and it was really soupy! Hopefully next time it will work out better! I’ll use this recipe from today, I’m pretty sure I only used a half banana and no yogurt last time… can’t remember.

74 Sally Anne @ PaleoRunnerGirl August 23, 2011 at 12:06 pm

I have recently become an almond butter convert. I eat the Trader Joe’s brand. Is Barney Butter worth the extra cost? I keep seeing it at various markets, but it is twice the cost of TJ’s. Any thoughts?

75 KathEats August 23, 2011 at 12:26 pm

You gotta taste it to see for yourself. I like it because it’s roasted, but if you eat tons of AB then maybe stick to the cheaper one

76 Tracy August 23, 2011 at 12:09 pm

Uggh! I’m jealous of your weather! It’s supposed to be 97* today and 100* tomorrow here in Kansas City :( Although this weather is probably headed your way…

77 Natalie August 23, 2011 at 12:43 pm

It’s starting to feel like Fall in NYC too. I can almost taste the fall apples, pumpkin pie and chili right around the corner!

78 Emily August 23, 2011 at 1:06 pm

Hope you’re ok at Great Harvest!! Heard you guys were at the epicenter of the earthquake!! WOW!

79 Jane August 23, 2011 at 1:09 pm

I am in McLean, Virginia and it was crazy/scary!

I hope you all (and the bakery) are okay!!

80 Brittany August 23, 2011 at 1:12 pm

Checking in to see if you guys are okay after the earthquake!

81 KathEats August 23, 2011 at 1:16 pm

We are! Thanks!!

82 Nikki August 23, 2011 at 1:25 pm

Kath you need to get OpenSky to open up to shipping to Canadians!! Many a time I have went on in hopes to order your Open Sky deal forgetting that they don’t, and it’s a no-go :(
That bowl is very sexy… great for food photos!

83 KathEats August 23, 2011 at 1:27 pm

I have asked many times…it’s just too complicated, esp. for food :(

84 Kristen, Sweetly August 23, 2011 at 1:33 pm

i went on the tea cups at six flags early this summer. i think this bowl would be more whimsical and less nausea-inducing. :p i was thrilled with every roller coaster, and got super sick on the tea cups. horrible, but hilarious.

85 April August 23, 2011 at 1:35 pm

I’m a little confused. Are you saying it’s the first day of fall because the weather cooled down, or does Virginia have some special dispensation from the Fall Equinox?

86 KathEats August 23, 2011 at 1:37 pm

Unofficial. Just first day it REALLY feels like fall. I’m cold in my house!

87 April August 23, 2011 at 1:40 pm

Gotcha. I’m in the middle of planning a Labor Day party and thought I’d stepped into a time warp.

88 Baking N Books August 23, 2011 at 1:42 pm

It’s only August! I’m surprised so many people think it’s really the first day of fall 😉

I agree though – it has so cooled off in the mornings- today was the first morning I wanted a warm breakfast in a while!

89 thelittlewife August 23, 2011 at 1:39 pm

Don’t feed the troll, guys 😀

90 Blessing @ Working Mom Journal August 23, 2011 at 1:45 pm

Hopefully the eathquake didnt affect you or the bakery…

91 Jennifer August 23, 2011 at 1:45 pm

Did you feel the earthquake this afternoon? We felt it up here in PA. Your post title “Tilt-A-Whirl” was very appropriate for today. :) Hope you guys are fine down there.

92 Jerri Ann Mills August 23, 2011 at 1:49 pm

I have been a follower and recipe re-maker of yours for some time now. I was so excited when I moved to VA a couple months ago, hoping I could make it to C-ville! I find it very crazy that you titled your post Tilt-A-Whirl this morning, especially following the quake we just had. Hope everything is intact at your home and shop! I want to personally thank you for helping me adjust into “wifehood” and cooking my husband real, healthful foods! We just had your whole wheat yogurt pancakes this morning, but in waffle form! MMM!

93 Angela August 23, 2011 at 1:56 pm

Snacking on GH Groovy granola from the store down the road from my office mmm craisins mmmmm

94 Katie @ Plates and Paste August 23, 2011 at 5:40 pm

I love all of your dishware! So cute :)

95 Shayla @ The Good Life August 23, 2011 at 7:25 pm

I’m so excited for fall too…just wrote a post about how I can’t wait for our fall Sunday tradition of football!

And why is Barney Butter so darn good? Just seeing that pic of it makes my mouth water for it! 😉

96 Tammy @ Palm Trees and Manatees August 23, 2011 at 7:39 pm

It’s funny because fall always made me feel a little bummed out . . . it meant winter was next. And I hate winter. But we just moved to Florida from Pennsylvania in January, and now I am so excited for fall and winter! It’s a really odd feeling for the girl who has always been a summer girl. Now summer will be the season I dread instead of winter.

97 Lauren August 25, 2011 at 10:47 am

Hey Kath! Cute blue mug! I collect mugs, and I always adore you’re place settings. Any fave mugs that you can recommend?

98 KathEats August 25, 2011 at 11:32 am

I have a few of my favorites (ginko and the one shown above) coming on sale in OpenSky very soon :)
