Today was quite the zig-zag of decisions!
- First we were going to go for a walk in the rain donning pink rainboots
- Then rainboots were nowhere to be found (Did I give them away when we moved!?)
- Then we were going to go running
- Then Matt found a DVD player on Craigslist for $15 and we decided to walk in the rain to get it
- Then we realized we didn’t have any cash
- Then we decided to walk 2.5 miles to Wachovia first, then to the DVD player
- Then the Craigslist person said she was leaving her house in 25 minutes
- Then we decided to drive
- Once we arrived at Wachovia, the computers were down and we could not get cash
- Then we went to another Wachovia and got cash
- Then we picked up the DVD player
- Then we headed home in the car to run, but we spontaneously decided that since we were already out in the car, we should just run in the cool neighborhood we were in
- Then we ran. Somewhere around 5 miles. I had no Garmin so it was just a fun run. And a good one to boot!
- Then we drove home
Then we ate lunch!
If it’s going to rain all day, I might as well pretend I’m at the ocean!
Sardine salad with lots of chopped veggies some beans
Some mayo, some salt + peppa, some basil
Served with butterhead from the garden – still wet from the rain (and washing in the sink
)
We made lettuce wraps. Here is my lovely hand model demonstrating -
It was hard to pass up on the chips, so I added some of those as well – mostly crumbles.
And two amazing pieces of fruit!
Lastly, an orange basil seltzer. Total winner.
Our run boosted my mood and the electrician is here fixing our light. And there’s a beer tasting on the agenda!

I love reading about people’s decisions like that! It’s seriously so fascinating to me
Lovely lunch!
I totally agree… that was so stragely fascinating for me as well, lol!
Oh what a fun morning!
That is quite the morning and afternoon!
What a flip-flop sort of day as far as decisions go! At least you still managed to get everything done!
Talk about a fly by the seat of your pants kinda morning! I love how flexible you guys are…
Quite a busy morning! It’s pouring here too, so I’ve spent some time baking
Best way to spend a rainy day! Hope you have a great afternoon!
Love that seltzer idea!
ooooooooh, your lunch looks SO good! the figs are gorgeous!
Does sound like quite the hectic and back and forth morning.
The rain makes everything so fresh and smell so good, even though we’re drowning a little bit here in DC. The roads are terrible – I’m absolutely dreading my commute home even more than usual!
I live in the DC area too and I know that on rainy days my commute is going to be double what it normally is! Today I’m expecting an hour and a half or so…
I can totally understand, I am in Maryland and am in total denial about what my commute is going to be like. It will be a nightmare.
Its amazing how many time plans can change, right?
It was so gloomy and rainy here last week, all of that must have moved to your side of the country because it has been gorgeous and sunny here!
love your flavored seltzer! definitley makes it more “fun” to drink
I totally have days of multiple decisions like that
The sardine salad looks awesome
I have never gotten the courage to buy sardines.
I like fish, but I’ve heard sardines are pretty…potent.
What do they taste like?
Buttery tuna – try them!!
i hate when that happens!! but at least you got your DVD player!!
Yum! Your seltzer looks great. It’s crazy how much your day changed! Rain can do that to ya for sure!
Love the lunch. At least the run worked out for you in the end.
I like adding herbs to my water and seltzer, but want to try crushing them first so I don’t get big pieces of herbs in my mouth while I’m trying to drink. Does anyone else have this issue?
Also, what has Matt been up to these days while you’re freelancing? Is he also awaiting the Great Harvest move? I’ve noticed both of you get to spend so much of your time together lately…you’re very lucky.
Truly beautiful lunch!! Have fun at the beer tasting!
Craigs list rocks! Especially when you find great deals
Random out of curiosity question: would you consider yourself a savory or sweet person? Veggies or fruit? Random I know. To explain, I have been reading your blog for awhile and it seems that you tend to favor veggies and savory. I know I much prefer sweet tasting. Definitely fruit!
Orange and basil, sounds like a great combo.
Oh definitely sweet!!!!!!!!!! All the way. I actually think a lot of veggies ARE sweet!
I have to try that with water, sounds pretty nice.
Your fish salads always look delicious
i totally followed you on that…my brain regularly is all over the place. hooray for a dvd player!
I had no idea Cville had so many beer tastings..so fun!
I got dizzy reading that!!!!
This looks like such a delicious lunch! I love colorful plates!
I love the close up photo with just a bit of the orange and the lettuce peeking in.
Isn’t it amazing what running can do for your mood? Love it. The lettuce wraps look great!
Such a lovely sounding day even in the midst of having to make changes in plans on the fly! Have a great rest of the [rainy] afternoon, Kath!
It is so fun to hear about your morning and the decision-making process behind it. I love the idea of using lettuce as a wrap, so clever!
lol. That’s a funny set of decisions. It rained here too and totally changed my plans.
WOw, you had a lot of running around before lunch!!
what a morning!
amazing salad
The last bits of the chip bag are always my favorite.
Look at how colorful your meal is! Looks good
haha Love the zigzagging. In reading it, it played out in my head like a sitcom.
You totally deserve some beer after all that chaos this morning! Have fun
I’m not sure about the sardines, LOL
I don’t think I’ve ever had any! How do you make your orange basil seltzer? I’ve been having issues getting my water down lately…just seems so unappetizing!
I just put in an orange slice and some basil with seltzer water
Looks like you’ve made the most out of a rainy day!
Yay for being spontaneous! Feels good, right?! Enjoy the rest of your afternoon!
Oh man, that basil/orange seltzer water sounds really refreshing!!!
Looks like quite the gourmet lunch- I want to try sardines! Do you know anything about the ethics of sardine catching/ how clean they are to eat? I read a bit about fishing practices in Eating Animals and have been staying away from fish for the most part since then, but I still ove fish.
I’ve never eaten sardines, but your sardine salad always makes me want to; though I am afraid.
LOL, I like the idea of seafood on a rainy day! Ahoy!
That is quite the list of errands you went on my dear! Glad you got the DVD player!
Your salad looks great. I’m trying to like sardines, but haven’t found a good way to eat them yet. Do you just drain and mash them before adding to the salad?
I hope your light gets fixed! too funny about all the decisions haha! Talk about plans going haywire!
I have yet to try canned sardines. Your sardine salad looks pretty tasty
those are some beautiful looking figs!!
It’s funny how day like that just happen and how fun they end up being! It makes your day go by extremely fast doesn’t it?!
These photos look awesome!
Dannng you’ve been a busy gal!
Not sure if I can do sardines! You make them look quite appetizing tho! I am making salmon burgers for dinner tho!
Check out my new POST on how to save calories at sbux! I just baked some ICED PUMPKIN OATMEAL RAISIN cookies today. Post to come soon!
I love the look and sound of that seltzer! mmmm.
Running in the rain is so much fun! And I am SO JEALOUS of the beer tasting!
LOVE the look of the orange, basil seltzer
I’m going to try that this weekend – maybe with blood orange! Thanks, Kath!
Heidi xo
Ooooooh, the fresh fruit and the seltzer look so yummy and refreshing!!!
I can’t find fresh figs anywhere!!
Hahaha, with that day I would’ve just gone home and watched a DVD, not gone for a run anyway! We’re clearly very different people
salad looks so yum…
i had sardines in my lunch 2 days ago and thought of you!
Yum, those lettuce wraps look so light and delicious! Good idea, I’ll have to try those.
